The ultimate argument against classifying donghua as anime.

Yet another L from China. Yet another cultural juggernaut banned, alongside Winnie the poo and South Park.
Sluaghlock2025-12-23 16:14
Maybe it's been too long since I last watched the show, but is/was South Park a "cultural juggernaut" *in China?* The show's writing is so specific to North American culture & politics most of the time that I don't see how it could be, but maybe it's a "Germans love Hasslehoff" situation.
cshin092025-12-23 16:54
Not really a Chinese juggernaut I was just talking in general. At least I think so.
IFapToCalamity2025-12-23 15:57
Regardless of the motive, announcing this just days before opening is wild.
It just causes way more logistical problems than it’s intended to “resolve.”
hollowfurnace2025-12-23 16:05
Have you seen the one where they told Ayumi Hamasaki to cancel her concert the day before?
Or when they interrupted Maki Otsuki mid-show?
Absolutely insane.
encryptoferia2025-12-23 16:10
.....i.... i just read your username.....are...are you fapping right now?
nacaclanga2025-12-23 16:11
That's intentional. The punishment should not only hit the Japanese creators but also the Chinese distributors. These should be trained to consider distribution of Japanese material a high risk factor and hence start to avoid doing it in a form of preemptive obedience. The same thing already happened with concerts. The focus is also on the publicity of the ban, which is much higher if you do it that way.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-23 15:58
lol
Zweihart2025-12-23 15:58
Competition is so much easier when you just ban the competitors.
underhunter2025-12-23 16:00
The chinese way. Steal then ban. It works when you have the worlds largest market.
Emergency-Boat2025-12-23 16:14
This is pretty extreme but literally every country does the "steal then ban", it's just called protectionism. USA with Tiktok, South Korea with Twitch etc
cat-meg2025-12-23 16:19
Banning a website is different from banning a category of media.
CyonHal2025-12-23 16:08
Im pretty sure this is due to recently soured relations between Japan and China, China tends to retaliate via cultural bans like this.
HoshiAndy2025-12-23 16:15
Could you possibly tell me about it and what happened??
To make it short Japan said they’d defend Taiwan from China
CyonHal2025-12-23 16:47
Japan said they would declare war on China if they blockaded Taiwan. Japan and China already have pretty strained relations to begin with because of Japan's invasion of China in WWII and the war crimes and atrocities Japan did not recognize or atone for. As an analogy, its sort of like if Germany never recognized the concentration/death camps they built in Poland. To top it off, Japan has a history of invading and colonizing Taiwan too, so its pretty messy overall.
CommanderZx22025-12-23 16:08
This is what they usually do. They move into a market, copy them and then ban the competition so that the money does not go to foreigners.
RGBkano2025-12-23 16:10
It's most likely due to the recent geopolitical issues between the two countries
kameueda2025-12-23 16:12
while your point on it’s own is true, that’s not the reason they’re being banned right now so it’s wrong in this particular case.
mmcjawa_reborn2025-12-23 15:59
reading the story, given the number of cancellations kind of sounds like it would have been better just to cancel the whole thing at that point...
IFapToCalamity2025-12-23 16:04
Nah that would force them to automatically refund. This gives them a chance to profit further.
Derallerechtere2025-12-23 15:59
China is only good at shooting it's own students.
VirinaB2025-12-23 16:03
*USA has entered the chat.*
Derallerechtere2025-12-23 16:22
Are you a bot? Or why do you think i am from the states?
CelWhisperora2025-12-23 16:24
when did they said you are from usa? Like what is your thinking process 🥀
Derallerechtere2025-12-23 16:43
Lmao i was irritated because i am not from the states so why would you mention it here
VirinaB2025-12-23 16:26
My joke reply was referencing how USA is #1 in school shootings. That was all. 🙁
Derallerechtere2025-12-23 16:42
Ok but this post or my comment has nothing to do with USA so i find it a bit irritating.

I am talking about the police mass shooting peacefully protesting students. And i am not from the States.

Did I say you are from usa?

Mrjuicyaf2025-12-23 16:04

You didn’t have to show everyone how much of an idiot you are but you did anyway.
Worried_Fisherman8932025-12-23 16:06
Well, I suppose China's got a large enough local market to not give a fuck about Japan's comic and cartoons, plus the production to boot.
Emergency-Boat2025-12-23 16:09
Japanese media is still pretty big, my local chain bookstore had a section dedicated solely to light novels/manga/artbooks, much more so than North America. Although it was all translated and published by Chinese publishing companies.
ZhuTeLun2025-12-23 16:07
China china china😭🥀
ZePlotThickener2025-12-23 16:07
From the article:"Posts claim that cosplayers portraying non-Chinese IP characters may be denied entry and that staff will conduct inspections inside the venue to ensure compliance."
I'm picturing enforcers with super thick glasses, being the most elite of nerds, able to instantly recognize every cosplay character.
"It's an original character, I swear!"

But it's about comics
AkiraIkuru2025-12-23 16:14
I still remember what happened just last month.
**Maki Otsuki**(大槻真希), the singer of *One Piece*’s first ED “Memories,” had [her Shanghai performance forcibly cut short](https://x.com/Byron_Wan/status/1994406212860088546?s=20).
All because China wanted to retaliate against an earlier comment by the Japanese prime minister, who said that Japan would not stand by if China carried out a military invasion of Taiwan.
China really looks like a clown here. No guts to confront Japan through real trade measures, so it resorts to petty restrictions on anime, music, and fan events instead.
Yooper_Eh2025-12-23 16:16
I hope it backfires and there’s only Heaven’s Official Blessing (Tian Guan Ci Fu) and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi) cosplays. 🤣 Nice, Wreck, Loli, and Nounou are invited too.
BlueAlphaShark082025-12-23 16:16
So, most of why I would go to a convention.
b4k4ni2025-12-23 16:19
I really don't get why. Yes, China and Japan are on bad terms for a long time now.
But banning Japanese anime/manga simply makes no sense, as this also pushes the Chinese version of them. It makes it more public. You don't need to force it, it will happen by itself. Chinese artists actually benefit from all of it.
I mean, I don't give a damn if I read a Korean, Chinese or Japanese manga. Or watch an anime. I don't like or dislike based on the country of origin. It makes no sense.
qef152025-12-23 16:24
Anecdotal and a side note, Hatsune Miku is also really big in China, enough to get her own set of concerts/event and even get her own digital audio player recently as a collab with a Chinese company (Hiby M500, sort of modern ipod/mp3 player).
Furthermore, the Chinese are completely addicted to Miku Fuwa plushies.
All of this is going to get erased (domestically) the way developments are heading.
Chinese people ain't going to like this, that's for sure. This should remind that the CCP is still very authoritan and accept no dissent.
