[REWATCH] Undead Unluck - Episode 23 Discussion

Hey all, sorry for the delay, last-minute christmas shopping took a long time

- [Oh shit, that’s the guy that kills Fuko in Anno’s future vision of the UMA Autumn fight, isn’t it?](https://i.imgur.com/yu907Lc.png) [](#emiliaohdear)

- [Ah, that’s Unseen.](https://i.imgur.com/CAr0APY.png) Didn’t realize he actually survived what Rip did to him.

- [There goes Anno’s other arm…](https://i.imgur.com/LLH45Ss.png) [](#watashiworried)

- [And that just happened to be Anno, huh.](https://i.imgur.com/CvdKYAb.png)

- [Dang…](https://i.imgur.com/n1DJh8B.png)

- [Aw, that *sucks*.](https://i.imgur.com/O22nL4t.png) [](#makicry)

- [Ooh, I really like the inking there.](https://i.imgur.com/vTCIYYY.png) Is that how it was in the original manga too?

- [Aw shit, wait, is the title meant to be from Akira to his mom?](https://i.imgur.com/JeUjemE.png) [](#yui-crying)

- [Of course this](https://i.imgur.com/dgQgIDM.png) is [how Akira came up with his penname.](https://i.imgur.com/0owq463.png) – Also, while it wasn’t in the rewatch threads, I *did* [correctly call his power being Unknown](https://i.imgur.com/X8BYDE7.png) in my DMs with u/KendotsX three days ago (which was right after I watched episode 21), so that’s nice. [](#chiochanvictory)

- Speaking of pennames though, fun fact, my username was originally created as a penname to use for fanfiction.net! Way back when I was setting up my account on there and it called for a penname instead of username, I thought that my *normal* go-to username back then (which was just the name of my then-favorite Pokémon + some numbers related to my birthday) didn’t really sound like a penname, so I decided I would reuse “Sky” (the name of my main OC at the time) and then slapped “Shimmering” in front of it because *just* Sky was too plain, and picking “Shimmering” meant it had some fun alliteration going on. 12-year-old me sure knew how to pick a good name, haha. 14 years later and I’ve been Shimmering-Sky or Shimmering_Sky (on the sites that don’t let you use a - in your username, like AO3) ever since.

- [Haaaaaaaaah…](https://i.imgur.com/HpOeb4W.png) [](#kukuku)

- [Ooh, wonder what led to Billy being in that situation.](https://i.imgur.com/DxUnWnp.png) [](#rengethink)

- [Fuko is safe!](https://i.imgur.com/Xrs1AwI.png) [](#grandhype)

- [That you did, Akira.](https://i.imgur.com/PSZ8oiX.png) That you did. [](#wipetears)

- [Bunny *did* get the gun, welp…](https://i.imgur.com/DU8yfBh.png)

What a great character Anno is! I said it after the last episode and this one just solidified that opinion.

Little Akira sitting next to his mother who was crying over losing her son was so heartbreaking. But her wish that he continue living and drawing manga, plus what he knew about Andy and Fuko's never give up spirit, driving him to survive and draw manga was so good.

And the manga drawing in turn helping him be known by others and acting as a loophole to his Unknown ability was brilliant. I love the writing here! So good.

The pen name bit I didn't quite get and had to look up. It's Unknown spelled out as Anno'un apparently. Hah!

Anno deciding to return the favour and save Fuko (and thus Andy) by changing what happens during the Autumn battle and succeeding, and thus changing the future here on out - all of it just gave me chills. So so so good.

We finally get to see more of the bunny person from Under. So their ability is to swallow any item? What type of negator are they, I wonder?

Rip doing all this for Latla was a bit of a surprise. I sensed something between those two, but didn't think that was the entire reason for everything he was doing. But what about Latla does he want to change by starting over with the Ark? Is she terminally ill or something? And what did Latla mean by I'm doing this for her too? Who is the 'her' she is talking about? Was it perhaps an error in the subs and it was meant to be 'him' as in Rip instead? She seemed very attached to him too and was desperate to save him when he was killed by Andy and Fuko during the ship battle. Is it that they both want to save the other from becoming a negator?

Either way, I can't wait to find out what happens next. I don't want this to end already. Well, there's the special to come but that won't be enough. Need another full season. Need it.

Wiggly butt!

r/wigglebutts is a great eye bleach sub to see Aussie dogs and their cuteness.

Oh no wonder Akira would’ve gone a bit mad.

Mmmm I’m worried now.

*Is* this Science Fiction or is it Science Fantasy?

Time for not to not trust any child who starts making their own fantasy series. All of them are suspects in getting brain blasted some other world’s reality. Do not trust the children.

This is an excellent PSA for avoiding picking up anything on the street.

…are you fucking kidding me, it was that obvious?! Anno Un = Unknown 😭

They were there the whole time?!

>Akira: Man I need to exercise a lot more

Me. Now that’s it’s way too cold for my long walks, I’m back to indoor low impact exercising!

Andy out here breaking hearts left and right.

Who did Shen and Billy lose?

To you, 2000 years from now.

Dragon ball. Would have collapsed if it was orange 😭

I was prepared for trouble, but not like this.

Dafuq typa fursuit/onesie does that?

What’s going on with Rip and Latla?

**First Timer Boost: Additional Thoughts**

I was distracted because there were men outside just vibing and harmonizing to “I Believe I Can Fly”, and they all parted aways. I’m unsure if all of them knew each other. It wasn’t a social media thing either; it was just random. And they all just knew who was taking which harmony and who would have their own little riff. And you all just…did a bro hug and then left like that???

I guess this is just guys being dudes. Or all of them are Disney Princesses, I don’t know.

✨Anyways✨

I don’t feel much for the prevention of Unseen killing Fuuko, but there wasn’t really time to show the depth of him being a threat and what happens after Fuuko dies.

I’m very curious on how and why God appeared onto Earth, and if any sort of Book of Revelations/Second Coming parallels are part of it.

**QotD**

1. How traumatic for them to deal with that as a child no less.
2. Rip and Latla with the whole raining on a tombstone.
3. I don’t like that it was silent ☹️

**Rewatcher**

As it turns out, Unseen was actually a pretty nasty guy, probably wouldn't have been on board with fighting God to the death. So Union actually dodged a bullet there.

That character profile is interesting because it's suggests that there is actually a pretty big narrative significance to Andy, who worked to become stronger through his ability inside his memories, killing the guy who tried to sidestep his limitations through probably some Artifact bullshit. But that's not really present in the anime considering how little we know of Unseen and what the third eye really is.

This preview not being voiced because Anno Un doesn't know the future anymore is so cool

Not too much to say other than it being a fun scene and learning some new stuff!"

"Thank you again to the David productions staff for providing support and letting me animate on the episode (Extra thank you to the Douga-Men/CleanUp Artists who had to do my cuts, I am sorry🙏)

Got to say, wasn't expecting this much of my work to air between these 2 months 😅"

Not a comment from the episode itself, but I think it's a nice way to finish off here, since Ohashi posted this before the final episode aired.

"Before you know it, it's already the final episode. Please stay with us until the very end."

Note: It was here that I remembered Backs also goes by "Bunny". I translated Sato's comment for [episode 15](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1pnazx3/rewatch_undead_unluck_episode_15_discussion/nu9mvem/) on the assumption he was talking about bunnies in general. I just realized he was talking about the character Bunny. In retrospect, I should have noticed, given that he wrote the English word in Katakana (バニー, Bunny) instead of using the Japanese word (兎, usagi). Oops.

Rewatcher

Akira's story makes me tear up every time. He's got so much more strength than I would have had in that situation.

Some things I only noticed now on rewatch:

* Since Anno no longer knows the future, we go into the final episode without a precognitive narration

* Yusai's such a cutie! But where have we seen that hat before? Hmm...

Akira's backstory is definately one of the sadder ones - all Negators are suffering...

And another great moment from kid Rip - the 'I'll give up my legs' speech gave me chills the first time round.
