Help me find something like Haibane Ranmei

I recently watched Haibane Renmei and it left a strong impression on me. I really loved the slow, atmospheric storytelling, the psychological depth, and the way it blends everyday life with something subtly magical as well as the contrast between a sense of calm and underlying tension.

The only thing it reminded me of was Hayao Miyazaki’s work; I couldn’t really think of anything else quite like it. Because of that, I had to find something new and tried Serial Experiments Lain by the same creator as Haibane Ranmei, but it turned out to be very different in tone and style.

For those who’ve seen Haibane Renmei, can you recommend anything with a similar mood or feel?

Not exactly like it, I personally found Haibane Renmei a bit more bleak, but some that I feel are similar are : So Ra No Wo To, Girl’s Last Tour, Kino’s Journey, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou

Glad people are finally recognizing the greatness of Haibane Renmei. One of my favorites!

Closest thing you'll get is Sonny Boy. It tells vaguely what it is about but give you enough to leave a strong impression that keeps you thinking about it.

Other shows that gave me a similar feeling were Girls Last Tour, Orb, Mononoke (not Ghibli), Eva.

Thanks! Yeah, i think it’s one of my favourites now too, had to immediately rewatch it with my mom who works as a child psychologist and it became even deeper after.

Will definitely check out your other recommendations, but now i really think i just will rewatch Eva first bc it really got similar vibe and i completely forgot about it

There are very few shows that slot quite so neatly into what it is trying to do - but that is true for all the best shows, they are unique! I would recommend the Yokohama Shopping Log OVA for something that is getting at its melancholy tone and appreciating of "emotions of the moment", but is much more slice of life and a bit more chipper. It has a very defined setting atmosphere in its flooded, post-apocalypse-but-its-chill nature landscapes, the same way the town of Glie & Old Home does.

Yeah, it’s absolutely unique which is great and sad at same time. Im not hoping to find anything exactly the same (and i don’t know if i want to? it was a very strange feeling after i ended watching the show, i wanted to see what’s going to happen next but understood that author said everything he wanted already so the sequel would just ruin whole idea) just similar vibe.

Yeah, I think that is how the best shows go right! No one's story is ever complete, but this chapter is and you got the full arc.

If you want to be a full nerd about it, there are a bunch of doujinishi that Yoshitoshi ABe, the lead creator of the show, made both before and after the anime. They are more concept art, vignettes, and other ways the story could have gone (the original concept Haibane lived in like modern Tokyo for example). A good way to get a deeper picture on the whole show without trying to sequel-it-up or anything.

Some good recs already. In creator terms, Haibane Renmei is actually more related to (and similar to) NieA_7 than Lain. It's not at all as good (because it's also a comedy) but it's worth checking out.

From the New World and both Boogiepop anime (but especially Phantom, visually) might also be worth checking out as they've got the depth and in differing ways societal contrasts with underlying magic, though both are somewhat darker.
