##Megazone 23 Final Discussion Thread

It's hard to be succinct about the impact Megazone 23 had on anime, both in economics and in content. Zimmerit puts the nebulous and decades-removed assessment "first successful OVA" into terms that can be understood:

> While it was in slightly better company by the end of the year, Megazone 23 still dominated the sales charts with 26,618 units sold. If that doesn’t doesn’t sound like a huge number, then consider that not only was it an enormous jump up from the previous year’s best-selling OVA (Birth at 4,793 units), but it would be over a decade until another OVA even close to those kinds of numbers (1997’s Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Episode 2 at 25,899 units).

Yeah, it took 10 years and Gundam Wing to match it. Although maybe that says more about the OVAs that followed than Megazone 23 itself.

Delzag: They were genetically-engineered Martian separatists all along!

The 23 refers to the 23 wards of Tokyo.

##Bonus Items

* A partially functional [official web site](https://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/flyingdog/megazone/) at JVC. Unfortunately, the streams of developer interviews in real media are long gone.

* [Zimmerit on Omega City 23](https://www.zimmerit.moe/megazone-omega-city-23/) and the [Translated Pitch Document](https://archive.org/details/omegacity23_pitch/omegacity23_pitch/)

* I made a half-hearted attempt to [list OVA releases]() over the next 10 years below.

* The timeline of the Delzag war and the Earth Reclamation Project, [translated]() and saved for posterity below. This was published after / with Part III, and so contains a lot of Part III-isms that might not have been part of the original Megazone TV series.

##Final Protection Mode Questions

* The original virtual idol: thoughts on Eve and the virtual idols who came after? And modern real-time generative AI?
* A secret generation ship sci-fi story. You may have been in a previous rewatch <name redacted> with me about a secret generation ship. How does Megazone 23 compare to that and other secret (or not-so-secret) generation ship stories (not just anime)?
* What can you tie back to Megazone 23 from later series, OVA and otherwise?
* Favorite parts of the series? Unfavorite parts of the series?
* If you watched one of the English versions, what did you think of the cheese?
* Do you think Megazone would have been successful as a TV series, and we'd still be talking about it alongside Macross?

**Coming Up**

From one of the first OVAs, to one of the first ONAs: **FLAG** (2006) This new, experimental distribution format, combined with its experimental series composition, makes this legitimately one of the most actually-not-hyperbolically underwatched mecha anime.

**Area 88** (1996) is one of those newfangled OVA releases that wouldn't exist without Megazone 23. Area 88 is to planes what Gundam and VOTOMS are to real robots. Area 88 was remade as a 12 episode CGI TV series. I'm thinking of rewatching both, with a small break between.
