You're like 1/30th of the way through the show
Idk, up to you but it's great. But I guess some people may not like it
CoffeeCup_Chronicles2025-12-24 15:09
Isn’t it the whole point of an anime (or any tv series for that matter) to hook you in the first three episodes tho?
Specific-Word-59512025-12-24 15:14
Depends. The current style of 12-13 episode seasons have more of the 3 ep format purely because they don't have enough episodes.
Older anime with 24 or 52 ep format, or continous ep format like HxH were faithful to the pacing of manga chapters and paced according to the chapters, which meant some took more than 3 episodes.
CoffeeCup_Chronicles2025-12-24 15:24
That’s a fair point, and I understand that the matter of hooking the audience is subjective to individual people. Personally though, I’ve watched older anime that had a lot of episodes that had me hooked in the first episode, take Monster for example. It had 74 episodes in total, and it only took me one to get drawn into the story. Now, if I had to watch 24 episodes of a 74 episode series in order for it to potentially get good, shouldn’t that say something about the pacing of the story?
John_Bot2025-12-24 15:15
Eh
Yes and no. If a writer has a lot of cache then they can be slow in their build up because they know the audience will trust them.
But usually there's some expectation of trying to front run content that you should expect to see throughout the remainder of the story to give people a glimpse at what they should expect
OmegaVirgin942025-12-24 17:21
That is a stupid heuristic made up by the community and no show has to follow it.
abandoned_idol2025-12-24 19:25
That is true. It's a shame to see people downvoting your claim.
Of course, exceptions always exist.
I like HxH, but have other favorites, so I can talk with less bias than others and avoid getting my feelings hurt when someone criticizes HxH (feel free to downvote dear reader, in fact, I insist as a fellow HxH fan).
HxH follows a number of battle shounen formulas and has a generic start, but does significantly deviate later (the author of HxH is known for creating the genre's rules, and goes out of his way to break those rules in HxH).
1) It has more characters. It often abandons the PoV of the protagonist to give characters arcs to other factions. It adds drama to side characters (something that shows like MHA fails to do).
2) It is deliciously and purposely edgy and subversive. It has novelty, even if fairly immature (this is NOT a mature story, but it's not boring either). It features things such as an edgy anti-hero on the good-guys faction and asks the audience to feel sorry for the opponent factions at times.
3) It showcases a few clever combat comebacks, mostly centered around the perverted "clown". That character is popular for good reasons (not the pervert jokes, but his unexpected "rule of cool" moments).
Now, the subjective question. If you were to ask ME if HxH is a mandatory watch, I'd tell you to prioritize "World Trigger" first (HxH is a great battle shounen, but it falls short of WT's place). And no, do NOT watch World Trigger, because WT has an incoming reboot announced! Wait for the reboot, cuz the old season 1 is now deprecated (too cheaply animated).
If you're feeling tired, you can leave HxH in the backlog. It's not a deep story, but it does have more clever instances of subversion in the "midgame". Its drawbacks are its generic start, that it gets narrator heavy later on, and that it is informally known as Hiatus x Hiatus (making sequel anime seasons very unlikely).
Also, keep in mind, if an anime has more than 100+ episodes, it is not unreasonable to expect the first 10-20 episodes to be underwhelming. For faster pacing, stick to stories that release their content in bursts of 12-24 episodes instead (seasonal format anime).
Yeah, the first few episodes of HxH are pretty fucking boring, you are not mistaken about that at least XD.
Waylornic2025-12-24 19:33
The whole point of anime was to hook you at episode zero. In that, the anime for HunterxHunter had already captivated its base audience with years of manga and an entire previous anime. As a matter of fact, the original anime probably does a more active job engaging the audience for retention whereas the newer anime went for authenticity instead of.
In any case, the three episodes rule is a made up American anime community rule. In TV, if you didn’t catch the attention of the audience in the first episode, you failed, most TV not relying on an established franchise, anyway.
Ashteron2025-12-24 15:13
*608 episodes of Guiding Light? You're like 1/30th of the way through the show.*
Sergiyakun2025-12-24 15:06
Yes keep watching until you see blood
Alert_Eggplant_62622025-12-24 15:06
You should, keep watching until episode 20
Horseridinghoe2025-12-24 15:14
Keep watching till ep 20 is like saying you have to watch the fourth film in a franchise to see if it hooks you. Kind of a lot to ask, even if the payoff can be be worth.
I would say drop if you're not feeling. Can always pick it up later from the same point.
Makisisi2025-12-24 15:06
5 episodes bruh. Anyways drop it if you don't catch the vibe
horizon_kun2025-12-24 15:07
Keep watching it gets better. I quite enjoy the early episodes, but I understand it can be slow for others.
BlueSeekz2025-12-24 15:07
the hunter exam arc is notoriously pretty slow, unfortunately a lot of people get bored and drop the show before getting through it. To be honest, I enjoyed the arc, but to each their own.
jjw19982025-12-24 15:08
You’re essentially in the prologue, I personally don’t think it really heats up until the end of the Zoldyck arc in iirc episode 26. I’d give it at least that long
Asmael692025-12-24 15:08
You can drop it, not for everyone definitely
But it definitely gets good a little bit later.
PerceptionOk85432025-12-24 15:11
I loved the chimera ant arc, but it’s the last arc and it takes a lot of time to get to it lol
unHolyKnightofBihar2025-12-24 15:11
You have to wait till 20 eps
DifferentialJello2025-12-24 15:12
I watched it all and I didn't like it very much either.
MusubiKazesaru2025-12-24 15:12
The early stuff got rushed so it's a bit less gripping. Give it time, Hunter x Hunter is still absurdly better than anything that aired in the last few years.
Duliu202025-12-24 15:12
Like a lot of long anime that are highly acclaimed, getting to the good part takes time. HxH will get more interesting once the hunter examination ends and will get more and more interesting with each episode afterwards.
AssistDapper18132025-12-24 15:12
Starts out slow and ends up being a banger. Not every anime is going to pop off within the first hour.
WakandaNowAndThen2025-12-24 15:12
You haven't seen much yet. If you're really giving it a shot you should get well into the exams. If you're into shonen battle anime you'll be hooked by the end of the exam arc.
Swimming-Elk67402025-12-24 15:12
I really liked the first arc. Not sure what about it doesn’t grip people.
VStubaru902025-12-24 15:16
This is an unpopular take, but I think it's overrated and apart from the chimera any arc is mid-good.
BrutalLegends2025-12-24 15:17
Do you really think you can judge a 148-episode anime in just 5 episodes? Try watching, it's really good.
If you don't think you are up for it, maybe then drop it
Brilliant_Beat_83272025-12-24 15:18
why yall watch smthn based on hype bruhhhh just watch when u feel like n when u dont get what the hype is all about yall come to social media n yap that shit aint good or its overrated or smthn...
SignificantTransient2025-12-24 15:19
It's a kids show. Don't expect much beyond that level.
TheCatlover1922025-12-24 15:19
One thing I learned with anime ratings is that most people rate based off of recency bias, meaning that they enter a rating for a show after finishing all episodes. So, if a show's ending or a later arc is a 10/10, then more people are likely to give it a 10/10. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the show is strong all the way through.
From what I've heard about Hunter x Hunter specifically, a lot of what makes the show good happens later in the anime.
I personally dropped Hunter x Hunter after 6 episodes, but I don't find anything inherently wrong with it. It was something that I thought was just ok. I'm also a person that wants to check out every noteworthy show and so I don't want to risk getting tied down to a show for a long time, only for it to be average in the end.
Most Hunter x Hunter fans will probably encourage you to keep going, but it's ultimately up to you on whether or not you do that. If you're having a decent time watching it (even if it's not spectacular yet), then keep going.
Ok-Dimension-47452025-12-24 15:20
ok how many shounen have you watched till now ?
if more than 4-5 then you will think its almost the same as any other show.
You are not wrong to think so because all shounen have similar formula but its just that it executes it better and subverts expectations.
Also If you can watch 5-6 episodes of 1999 hxh also. I think it is a superior adaptation despite having a lower score on mal. If you find them better then continue with 1999 else do what you are doing.
1999 at many instances has better storytelling and animation/direction and its not that slow compared to 2011 version.
Pike712025-12-24 15:20
On first watch I did not find the first arc all that spectacular, but my god the show gets insanely good in later arcs. You should keep watching
wailingwonder2025-12-24 15:22
I can speak from personal experience - yes. Hunter x Hunter was iffy to me at the start and is one of my favourite shows ever by the end.
HazumaHazuma2025-12-24 15:22
HxH is pretty infamous for having a pretty crap set of first episodes. The 2011 version even speeds it up a bunch and it still doesn't solve the issue.
I'd say keep watching, the more you get into the Hunter exams the more the show gets into it's stride. The test with the prisoners and candles is the part where it starts showing the vibe the rest of the show sticks with.
Most people agree that the show really starts popping off after the hunter exam arc (it does), but if that's too much of a sunk cost time sink for you, then feel free to drop it earlier.
But also, it *is* a long form shonen show. So you should probably give it a bigger chance then 5 episodes.
Ginsan-AK2025-12-24 15:40
5 episodes.. you haven't even got past the prologue yet..
Halcyon_Inseo2025-12-24 16:37
Controversial opinion among the community, but I don't think the 2011 adaptation is good. The 1999 version was superior in art, mature thematics/atmosphere, kite's introduction, and in pacing… it just didn't get as far into the story. Try watching the 1999 version and then picking up with the 2011 version where it left off—around Greed Island (there's some old OVAs that covered that arc too, but I think it's easier to just start up with the 2011 version after York New City)
Waylornic2025-12-24 19:37
HunterxHunter is pretty stock standard adventure story at first. It becomes particularly weighty as it continues.
If you’re not interested in the world as it’s been described or intrigued by the characters introduced, not sure if you’ll be engaged with the story.
Sea-Currency44042025-12-25 00:39
if you dont want to keep watching dont maybe its not for you
LarneNessit2025-12-25 13:37
I think what people like about hunter hunter is that it changes tone, genre and cast regularly. Every arc is vastly different from the last which means even if you are not enjoying this section the next one may totally reel you in. It keeps this fresh. I personally hated the ant arc as the pacing slowed to an absolute crawl, and I didn't like the video game arc because the stakes lowered so much. That being said I loved the section where they got into the power sets and dealt with the evil troupe, and really enjoyed the section about killuas younger sister. Personally I watch very little battle shounen and it was better than most I've seen.
