Thinking of recommending this movie for my family Christmas watch. I don’t want to spoil anything for myself, but I want to know if I should suggest this for my family, or just watch it by myself.

I wouldn't unless your family is very open-minded. The movie deals with LGBTQ issues across the entire spectrum of letters and has some usual anime tropey perverted gags that don't land outside of Japan.
It also has some themes that might not be super family-time oriented.
If you're taking recs, it's not an Xmas movie but the Stand By Me Doraemon trilogy are perfect for family-time.
Edit: A young girl gets groped several times in the movie, one of which happens within minutes of starting. And it's played for gags each time. Please use your brain and think about how it might not be the best movie for a normal chill family holiday.

Mkay, looks like a solo watch for me then. Thanks for the info 👍

Yeah ofc! Great movie, just kind of heavy.

If Bad Santa exists and is a great movie to many, this might be too, just from entirely different door.

It must be a country with a lot of persecution to think that a film like this is unsuitable for families to watch at Christmas just because one of the main characters is supposedly gay. It was made long before the term LGBTQ was even invented, and he's just a person with that personality.

Sorry but that looks like a review from a "concerned parents" group lol.
It is a great family movie, and a christmas movie. It has social commentary and great diverse characters (like in the real world). It's great for family time.
Themes? Families need to talk openly about many themes (or just don't talk if you don't want to).
Not everything has to be american-disney-sanitized to be 'compliant'. Enjoy the show < 3

Yes, as long as your family is fine with a trans main character and use the term fa\*\*ot. It shows some unfortunate reality but the overall message is very wholesome.

Depends on the family, but older kids (12+) it should be fine. Though I grew up watching Pulp Fiction and Speed during the holidays.

Its rated pg 13

I watched it recently to also vet if it was family friendly. It's a great movie but one of the very first lines is an f-slur. On the whole, I think it can be a great family movie. I heard the dub is good but I haven't watched it yet. My hope is they cleaned up the language a bit.

I don’t know if the anime was dubbed because swearing is usually in English dubs.
maple-tacocat2025-12-26 00:22
If an f-word is an issue you guys gotta control the amount of presidential stuff your kids watch/listen lol
ACFinal2025-12-26 07:18
If that's what's in the original film it should stay in the film.

i absolutely agree but i also know companies like to censor art. In this particular case it would work in my favor if they did but I still agree they shouldnt

I would not watch it with my family, but if your family likes anime and is open minded, i don't see any problem.

yes
OhScheisse2025-12-26 05:23
They swear, show female nipples, have a trans character, show blood, and other PG-13 type stuff.
Overall, I'm not a prude so I wouldn't mind watching it with family. But it depends of you gave a conservative family or would feel uncomfortable with those topics
