Why Did I Wait So Long to Get Into Anime??!!

Never watched anime as a kid but I’m totally obsessed now! So far this year I’ve watched, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Dan Da Dan, JJBA, Cyberpunk Edgerunner, Sakamoto Days. Waiting on S2 of Blue Eyed Samurai and I’m about to finish season 4 of AoT. I’ve got to finish Cowboy Bebop once I get Crunchyroll again.

I like a variety but I’m really into the dark, moody, psychological thriller, supernatural mystery, crime, horror, etc. Just looking for my next binge to watch to start the new year.

Hi MxFarenheit, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

>WATCH HIGURASHI

Just make sure to start from the 2006 one and not the ones released 2020 and after.

MxFarenheit2025-12-25 17:18

I’ll keep that in mind!

princessMedley2025-12-25 19:04

I would recommend the visual novel over the anime instead :)

MxFarenheit2025-12-25 17:19

Thanks!

Regit_Jo2025-12-25 17:01

I’d recommend you Monster, very legendary psychological thriller.

And I’d recommend you Gungrave, a mafia thriller saga of love and betrayal (one of my personal favorites.)

MxFarenheit2025-12-25 17:19

I have that one on my list and started it, but I guess I’ll have to get used to the sub version unless there’s a dub available.

whahaaa2025-12-25 17:46

been waiting forever for Blue Eye Samurai S2!

MxFarenheit2025-12-25 18:05

I’ll definitely have to rewatch S1 when S2 is announced.

MaximalDisguised2025-12-25 18:25

Just fyi Blue Eye Samurai is not anime, it's a French-American production not Japanese.

Some good recommendations already but also check out Shiki, School Days, Happy Sugar Life. 🌆

mekerpan2025-12-25 19:26

I didn't watch my first anime until my late 40s -- in 1999 when my wife and I took our teen/tween children to see Princess Mononoke. ;-)

My first anime series was Serial Experiment Lain -- which is still a favorite

lemon_icing2025-12-25 19:44

That was one of my early one’s, too.

mekerpan2025-12-25 19:56

It set a very high bar for subsequent shows. ;-)

lemon_icing2025-12-25 20:04

Talking about high bar - I introduced my partner to anime wth Cowboy Bebop. 😅. He’d only ever seen movies, not episodic; Akira, Princess Mononoke, etc.

MxFarenheit2025-12-25 19:53

I’ll have to look that one up! Thanks for sharing.

8andahalfby112025-12-25 19:27

Now that you're here, please make and fill out a MAL/Anilist account before your list gets any longer! This will help us identify other shows to suggest in the future.

Seconding Pyscho Pass and Monster, they both fit your "dark, moody, psychological thriller, supernatural mystery, crime, horror," labels exactly!

Mr-Dumbest2025-12-29 23:24

Shinsekai Yori checks basically all the boxes you looking for (maybe except thriller) not sure if its on the platforms you watching though.
