Anime with miserable characters. everyone is having a messed up life
I’m looking for anime recommendations with dark, heavy, or depressing themes and strong character writing
I’m in a place where I feel very isolated no school no job no friends and all. I’m hoping to find an anime where the characters are written so well that I can truly understand them and feel understood in return.
Something character driven emotionally intense and honest any suggestions?

White Album 2
It goes on past high school and the bulk of the story is actually about the same characters in college and then as young adults.
Will say that the anime adaptation was definitely one of the most faithful VN adaptations I've seen, even though it only covered a small portion of the full story.
Though it also sounds like you might want to seek some professional help if it available to you.
He eventually figures his feelings out, at least a little, but his struggles in the first episode are played straight for comic effect and I enjoyed it.
That and Takopi no Genzai.
Anyway if you want to be not alright: Now and then, here and there.
Oldschool dystopian reverse isekai, full on slavery, exploitation, and other good not family friendly stuff.
If you are willing to read manga, I dont think it gets worse than Fire Punch. Just everything sucks here.
Read the Manga after Season 1 Anime for the ending.
It's set in a school for those with unresolved trauma that couldn't handle normal school
- Elfen Lied
Grave of fireflies is a classic for this.
Shoujo tsubaki.
15 is complete, Dregs is ongoing but is about 30+ chapters deep right now. I feel like it's getting closer to the end though.
Already watched the second one I'm going to watch "this monster wants to eat me"
No, it's not anime
Yes, it's absolutely what you're looking for
Haibane Renmei
\-Made in Abyss
School Days
Shinsekai Yori
Based off the book "No Longer Human" basically a giant suicide note/book which was the last book the author wrote. The anime is essentially the "author" being isekai'd and then accidentally helping people in the pursuit of finding a way to kill himself.
At least whats what I know and simply put. Overall a pretty good anime. Wouldn't say its deep as you want or anything, but I feel it would be nice to check out ya know?
"Ergo proxy" as well
In any case, that's how the anime starts. It's a very well-written anime. It's got some high and very low/depressingly sad moments.
B) Berserk (1997)
Kotaro Lives Alone. About a kid who lives alone. Lots of very dark humor.
Mardock Scramble. About a serial killer who turns women who were raped by their fathers into jewelry.
