Watched Tokyo Ghoul and was wondering if there was anything else like it, any suggestions for what I should watch next?

I watched Tokyo Ghoul and found the premise very compelling but poorly executed. I am new to anime and manga so I am reading the mangas for Tokyo Ghoul, but I was wondering if there were any similar style or feeling animes that were of higher quality. Like I said, I am new to anime and as such may not be able to follow really complicated ones, I am struggling with deciphering half the action scenes in the manga as is (still good though, not putting it down).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I would like it kindly if there was a brief, non-spoiler explanation of the premise so I know what I may be getting into. Thanks in advance

Parasyte the maxim is probably the closest to Tokyo ghoul. Keep in mind though, the anime of Tokyo ghoul is butchered. Do yourself a favor and read the manga. You will not be disappointed.

Ik, I’m reading the manga rn because the anime sucked. The first season was nice enough, the second season fell off, then the third season was completely confusing because apparently the second season was there for the love of the game or something.

More accurately, the second season does an anime-original route, which roughly has some of the same story beats as the latter half of the manga, before following the sequel manga for season 3, which acts as if season 2 did follow the manga-equivalent route. Although even season one omits details that become very relevant later on.

Parasite is one but it is kinda just meh. If you like the action side of tokyo ghoul it is the closest you can have but for other parts you gotta change themes. Lotm has the mystery and the working in a group against a force part but the fights aren't flashy but more realistically made with little plot armor. You have bungou stray dogs but it is pretty light compared to tokyo ghoul and no body horror. Tokyo ghoul is like the only one of it's kind at the moment

I recommend Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan, Ajin Demi-Human, Claymore. You might enjoy Psycho-Pass & Land of the Lustrous as well.

I hear Tougen Anki and Ajin Demi-human are very similar in nature to Tokyo Ghoul

The tokyo ghoul manga more than makes up for the anime.

It’s older but tokko was an early anime that I saw that tokyo ghoul reminded me of

UtsukiUtsu2025-12-25 23:19

I like both the anime and the manga for separate reasons. But the vibe of the story and atmosphere is what really draws me to Tokyo Ghoul. I would love to find something with a similar vibe but I have yet to find anything. I believe user apkmasterofgames was pretty close with his suggestions Bungo Stray Dogs and Parasyte but I agree it is its own thing.

Big_Bit_742025-12-25 23:20

Tokyo ghoul is on another level

But I have some recommendations for you...

Chainsaw man, Demon Slayer, Ajin, Shiki

Link101032025-12-25 23:34

Terra Formars. I would say the mood of it could be similar for how dark it can be, but im not sure what else it could compared with.

A team of genetically modified volunteers go to mars to look for a cure for a new disease and its not easy, would be the gist of it.

Unfortunately the 2nd season suffers from becoming a completely different genre of show and very much kills the vibe of the first season entirely.

Fanceepance2025-12-25 23:42

Just to mention, I read plenty of manga and I still have trouble deciphering Tokyo Ghoul's action artwork, so it's not just you haha

May I ask what in particular you liked about TG?

OverWeekend54182025-12-25 23:49

Ajin was pretty cool

Kabaneri of the iron fortress was absolutely peak

Parasyte the maxim

All have a similar permise to TG but do a lot more with it

mclovintnb2025-12-25 23:52

Attack on titan

MaleficentCake4702025-12-26 01:12

Along with the other suggestions here, I recommend Owari no Seraph, if you'd also prefer a similar theme.

Super_AJ1012025-12-26 01:29

Deadman Wonderland, Good anime but unfortunately it aired one season then it was cancelled so you would have to move over to the manga

Orava19882025-12-26 15:05

Totally forgot about this anime. Hard to believe they cancelled it. I was so incredibly psyched for season 2.

Super_AJ1012025-12-26 17:24

Same! It's the generation of remakes so all hope is not lost

Any-Atmosphere-79232025-12-27 06:19

Read the manga of tokyo ghoul
