Well would you look at that, another day, another Cakeday year end post! Gotta keep tradition up after all!

Man, 7 whole years since I first joined reddit, that’s gotta be bone crushing at this point…

The year has definitely been quite a wild one not just for me, but I’m sure it is for the rest of you too, and for this post I thought I’d share a little something that’s one part observation, another part personal message, so basically par for the course for these types of posts.

So when I was kid, I was one of those standard folks who largely lived in ignorance and innocence for the world around them, and was mostly just floundered in cartoons and candy, all that sweet and sugary stuff. However, when you have parents like I do, it’s not all fun and games, they always stressed for me to keep watching the news because it was one of the few programs where I could actually “learn” something from in contrast to all the mindless TV shows I watched. There even came a period where it was outright required and couldn’t watch anything else. And it was just soooooooo boring, it was just talking and talking and when do we get to do the good stuff. The only part I always liked was the weather, because that was the only part that was actually animated. TLDR, cartoons are fun, news is boring.

Then I started to grow up, and suddenly things were happening that were in close proximity to me and my family, events that I started to grow aware of because they were things that you couldn’t avoid. “What’s going on here, how did this happen? What if it affects me and everyone I care about? I should probably watch and read the news just in case”. And that’s what happened, I found myself tuning in to what was going in my city, state, country, and even the world, because I wanted to know what was happening, I wanted to make sure I was aware, I didn’t want things happening to those I cared about, I didn’t want it to happen to me. How would I do that? Hell if I know, I never thought about it at the time, it was just to “make sure”.

But everytime I tuned into the news, it was always the same damn thing. Someone whose died, something about politics, war, disease, famine, all of it, everytime I read something that’s going on in the world, it’s *always* something bad, nothing but a reminder that the word is a cruel and unforgiving place that just wants to beat you down. It almost makes you want to run away to a place where you can hide everything out until it’s all over, or just take the exit ticket early before the planet collapses in on itself. It’s so noisy, too overwhelming, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Why couldn’t I just go back to being a child? Where there isn’t much to worry about other than school and what to eat? How do the children of this generation feel? What wouldn’t I give to be like them?

Well, not much, cuz I wouldn't want to be lol. But as I was looking at all of these bad news stories that always seem to report the worst thing that ever happened and constantly one upping itself, I found myself asking an important question: “how can anyone keep themselves sane looking at all of this?” Which led into another question:

“Is this what doomscrolling/posting feels like?”

At one point, it really felt like I was just looking at bad news for the sake of it because my mind had suddenly become hardwired to search for the worst of news going on, and whenever I did come across it, this terrible feeling of emptiness and apathy rushed over me, as if it was sucking up all the life force out of me to leave me an empty husk completely detached from the world around me. So I decided to completely distance myself from the news, and do some research on this whole topic (which I discovered was a recent but common phenomenon surprisingly enough). And it made me come to the realization that all of this stuff isn’t what totally makes up the world, and that sometimes it’s completely inaccurate to what you feel represents the whole if that makes sense. The world isn’t all doom and gloom, within the cloudy skies the sun shines just a little through the cracks.

So I decided to actively search for good news instead of just totally cover the bad news, a proper balance that helps to let me know that for everything that happens, there is an opposite effect to it. For every positive there’s a negative, that’s what makes up the planet, and by extension the universe, it’s what keeps everything functioning and stable! Don’t cite me though, I ain’t no scientist.

On top of that, I recognize that despite all of the things happening around me, life still goes on. The world could be peaceful and everything could be dandy, and I’d still have things to worry about in my life. There are things I can still control, a way for things to be better for me, and you what, things have been getting better!

I was able to complete another semester for my masters program (I could graduate with a degree in hand by next year if I keep things up), I was finally able to get a new job that pays better and gets me productive (I’ve been crushing on this cute girl at one of the departments too, we’ll see where that goes lol), and finally amassed enough money to get a new laptop, heck I’ve even picked up drawing again after being inspired by some other artists, and it actually feels like I’m good at it! It’s mostly sketches that I’ll probably share later, but hey it’s better than using a program to do the work for you. I can even definitively say I’ve gotten back into anime! (Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Bocchi the Rock all 👍). Still working on manga and movies though, but comic books have been stellar (read Absolute DC!)

Does this outweigh anything that’s going on in the world? Maybe not. But it’s a *good* thing that happened, and that alone is what’s worth treasuring. I know that things have been looking pretty down if you look at everything going on. It’s hard and frustrating I know, but good things *have* happened, they *are* happening, they *will* happen. Life goes on, and I know great things will happen for you, me, and someone else on this planet. Keep yourselves aware, but don’t hurt yourself, it’s all about balance and caution. Take care of yourselves, and keep on going, but something good will happen, I’m sure of it.

To draw from a quote from a really good manga series:

*"Why are we alive, maybe we're waiting for something good to happen!*

Anyone who catches that is a real one.

~~Or maybe I’ll just eat my words or something, I hope they at least taste good.~~

TLDR: I saw the news as boring, then necessary to be aware of stuff, then shoved it away when said stuff was depressing, realized that the world isn't all about bad things, and made sure to be aware of good things too to keep a good balance of things, acknowledging that while bad things are to happen in one's life, good things can happen too, case in point, me.

What's the angle here /u/cronus999, is this like stock lending for commodities/gold or just a real scam and you'll just lose gold when they or the shortsellers(?) go under?

I read about half of _The Tatami Galaxy_ today, and one of the parts that stood out most to me is its sense of place. It grounds itself within Kyoto through mentioning the streets buildings are on, referencing monuments and landmarks, and sometimes even describing parts of the route the protagonist takes from one location to another. This creates a nice, lived in feel that adds much depth to the story.

Unfortunately, my ability to appreciate this is likely rather limited compared to someone who has lived in Kyoto for any decent stretch of time. I do not know the streets nor the landmarks; however, I did rather appreciate when the protagonist and Ozu spent time being weirdos on the philosopher's walk, as I encountered this rather nice strange old man on it in my few days is Kyoto.

I vaguely seem to recall /u/eetsumkaus talking about _The Tatami Galaxy_ and how its set in Kyoto in the past?

Well I'm on track for my worst year in anime watch time since 2016, I only have 22 completed entries at the moment

Spent the Christmas finishing up Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

Honestly, i feel very mixed on the game.

I really enjoy the RPG aspects but the combat is kinda of mess.

The sidequests are a mixed bag because they are some good ones but a lot of them felt very boring and pointless. It does not help that there are so MANY sidequests so there are way more bad sidequests than good ones.

I like the main story but I fet very underwhelmed by the ending. And for such a slow burn game, the payoff for slow burn was not as satisfying

Overall, I feel kinda mixed on the game. Like I enjoyed it to spend around 200+ hours on the game but I don't particularly love it after finishing the main story.

Well, today I literally binged the second season of Gun Gale Online. I liked it much more than the first season, to be honest. I think Len as the protagonist is really great. I also really like Pithou; he's my favorite character. Usually, when they make these spin-offs of famous series, the secondary characters always leave something to be desired, but not here. Here, the secondary characters are great; I mean, I liked them all a lot. To be honest, I'd love for there to be a third season. P.S. Watch Flip Flappers

I've decided that if no one else is going to do a Pride Month rewatch for 2026, I'll do a Simoun rewatch for Pride Month.

[Cont'd]>!In all seriousness, with one cour and it seems the first arc finished, it's probably a good time to take a minute and reflect. The Symphogear comparisons are probably unavoidable, of course, but as /u/zaphodbeebblebrox advised, I'll try to engage with the show on its own merits as much as possible. Overall, I'd say the show shares a lot of DNA with Symphogear, but it's doing a good job in translating that into its more Precure-esque format to create something that clearly isn't just a 1:1 copy with some of the edges filed off to make it suitable for kids. I think the biggest thing that stands out to me is that Princession Orchestra is funny. Like, Symphogear isn't not a funny show, but I think Princession takes advantage of the more leisurely pace and SoL focus to really sell the jokes with some really good comedic timing. The librarian that yelled kelp for literally no reason, Nagase making an Eva reference, and the huffing Navue thing were some standouts just from this watch session.!<

[Cont'd]>!The story is also pretty good. I feel like it's doing a good job so far of pacing the plot to allow for a more SoL/Monster of the Week vibe without just resetting the status quo to zero at the end of every episode. There's just a bunch of little things I notice that make me feel like things are happening, especially with Natsu. Things like the quick mentions of Natsu joining the Broadcasting Club and later mentioning she's done a few lives off camera to get the sense that even if she's not the focus, she's still doing things and making progress on her own goals. Also just little things in how she reacts and things she says that imply that she's noticing things are going on with Minamo and she's thinking about that without making it the center of what's going on. All in all, I am really enjoying myself. Kinda kicking myself for not following this week to week since it started airing, but it also shares Symphogear's trait of being eminently bingeable, so maybe I should be kicking myself for not starting after it's over.

Also, it doesn't really need to be mentioned but the music is, of course, just great. My favorite insert song is Kagari's and my favorite overall song so far is the ED. [Episode 12]>!<

Shows with pervy MCs and raunchy comedy usually have a tendency of interrupting romantic scenes with raunchy jokes. Amagami on the other hand is generally pretty good at using the raunchiness for setup and giving space to the romantic parts of the scene.

I ate so much prime rib. I am content. Family was cute and slightly dysfunctional as expected. Big dog Great Dane lab mix is still gigantic and now he has grey whiskers. I recently noticed that my phone hasn't been charging with certain cables. Looking at it closely, I noticed the cables I put in were slightly off-tilt for all the cables I used, even if the charging works with some of the cables.

Suspecting a clogged USB-C port, I took a toothpick to dig through the charging port, during which I've dug through a surprising amount of dust and lint. Took a while to get to the point where I started seeing shiny metal indicating the bottom of the charging port. It's probably years worth of gunk that I dug out.

By the end of it, I could insert the USB-C cable by 2-3mm more into the charging port. Even the cables that didn't work initially worked flawlessly.

TL;DR PSA: Charging ports can gather an amazing amount of lint.

OK, today's Connections was impossible for me, I simply did not have the knowledge necessary to solve blue and green. Ugh, hate these ones.

For whatever reason there's some big hate campaign going on against the OG Bleach Anime going on right now on over at Twitter with people calling it a shit adaptation, and even as a big Bleach hater I genuinely don't know what everyone's problem is [](#hardthink "It's hardly the best adaptation I've seen, not even Abe's best, but it's perfectly fine.")

Looking at my vacation pics, seems like it took me a while to warm up and make myself take pictures. I've never been the type to take that many. I usually get distracted by the actual vacation than being worried about whether I'll put it on film to look back after the fact.

It probably helps that I tend to recall these things in detail easily.

Thankfully my workplace didn't have a Boxing Day sale, so all the other stores around us absorbed customers before they could get to us.

Wasn't too stressful aside from the time I was alone and my computer randomly decided to freeze right as a line was forming.

It wasn't too difficult but a couple customers did piss me off. I announced that the system wasn't working and asked them to please sit down while I called someone to help fix it, but for some reason they took that as an invitation to walk up anyway.

Also someone might be trying to launder money. This couple asked if they could return an item and buy the exact same product and some other stuff to get points on their card. When we told them it was out of stock they stuck around for hours talking to each other and came up to me when my friend went on break to ask if they could try to refund to a different card other than the one they paid with.

[TV Confession]>!I have not seen the Interview with the Vampire TV show (Nor read the books, my experience with it begins and ends with the film) but I will say I find it very funny that from what I can gather the vampires there are *EXTREMELY* horny in it when from what I've heard their book counterparts we basically asexual (Albeit *not* aromantic? Again, I dunno much beyond the movie). Honestly I think what makes it so funny to me is just how both reverse the usual vampire tropes regarding sexuality. I mean it's kind of a running thing with vampires already that the sexual aspect is in some way approached, it's just it's usually straight from my experience. Whereas here you got either "They have lots of sex but they're all gay" (TV) or "They could not care less about sex" (Book).!<

I've started Solo Leveling S2

It's kinda interesting hearing so many good things about it even from my normie friends, seems like it struck really hard even outside the general anime sphere.

My brother for example has practically never watched before, but then he randomly watched AoT and fell in love with it and then I think he watched Death Note and that's it. Then he randomly came to me today and asked me if I watched Solo Leveling S2 because that's the talk of the office which made him binge both seasons then even rewatch them. Like, woah.

So we figured we could watch the last few episodes tomorrow night together, so I'm binging S2 right now, at least the first 9 episodes or so of it.

It's been a while since I watched it, but it definitely seems so far to be consistent like S1. It's kind of dumb fun. Good Sawano music, good well animated fights and action, without too much story depth or anything.

Oh, talking about good story though

Where the FUCK is my LotGH remake sequel? It's been like 3 years since the last announcement
