Bro? Rurouni Kenshin omg

Just binged the whole thing and I'm still processing. I know it's old but honestly it was so refreshing watching something like this. Feel like modern anime lost whatever magic the old ones had.

First, the characters actually feel like real people. Kenshin's whole thing with his past, trying to live peacefully while his Battousai side keeps wanting to come out just hits different because it's not just some edgy aesthetic. The author clearly put thought into why he struggles the way he does, not just "guy has powers, guy sad." And watching that internal conflict play out over the series? It feels earned. When he does snap and goes cold, there's actual weight to it. One second he's goofy wanderer guy, next second he's just different. You feel it, kind of like that duality Saeba has in City Hunter.

Also! The OST is an absolute masterpiece. Like every track just fits perfectly. The quiet moments, the action scenes, it all just works. The music carries so much weight that new anime just doesn't seem to capture anymore. Tbh the sound design does half the work. It's insane.

Honestly it even got me wanting to study Japanese more seriously. Like I actually redownloaded Duolingo and Bunpo to get back at it lol.

I don't know about the jail part, but he is a very clouted mangaka, big connections in the industry and a lot of successful mangakas were his assistants or friends etc.

Oda was his former assistant and attributes a lot of his success to him hence his unwavering support(Japanese culture is very weird in this aspect)

Only famous mangaka I know who did not openly support Watsuki in a way or another is Kubo lol.

Uh, while technically it's not wrong I think it's important to clarify what exactly he did. The author was convicted for owning large amounts of child pornography, which was legal until 2014 (which does say something about how regressive Japan was in that and other aspects) past when it was banned, which yes is creepy and disgusting, but isn't exactly the same as being arrested for directly sexually assaulting kids like say, the act-age mangaka did. The ruruoni kenshin author was punished as well, but ultimately looking at it purely from a legal standpoint, he wasn't given that harsh a punishment simply because the crime was not legally that severe.

Because the term convicted pedophile is generally taken to mean someone who sexually harrassed or assaulted kids and so is labelled a pedophile and a sexual offender. That is not what the author did, and while what they did do is still shitty, there are levels here, and you can point out said shittiness without being misleading. They also say he was let off with a slap on the wrist, which is technically incorrect since as I pointed out, from a legal perspective, his crime was not that large. Again, independent of whether that's right which is something you can decide for yourself, in accordance with the law, he was not let off with a slap on the wrist, he was appropriately punished.

While I see your overall point I think you're being a little lenient. People who consume this content directly contribute to the creation of it and thus are implicated in abuse. Like you said, it's one degree removed, but not all that far away IMO. You base a lot of things on the law, but if the law said that baby murder was okay it wouldn't make the act any less abhorrent. I think that's the feeling people are tuning into when they say they feel he got a slap on the wrist. Technicality or otherwise.

It's important because it's a different law, and under that law, what he did was not considered a grave crime. Immoral? Yes, but being immoral is not necessarily the same as being a crime. One must be objective, and while what he did is definitely wrong, under the jurisdiction he lives, it's not a serious offense. Don't like it? Good for you you don't live there then.

As the person who replied to you said, I never said that you should be okay with it, heck I'm not and have actively chosen to avoid his works as a result of this, but I believe in being clear and about and true to the facts, and I've seen a lot of misinformation around this. Heck in this very thread you can see one reply to my comment claiming that it was never legal in Japan or anywhere else, when that's not true and it was legal until 2014. It's a heinous and disturbing fact, but one that shouldn't be ignored, and ignoring it is in it's own way harmful. It's a fact that to this day there are parts of the world where child marriage is practiced. It is the sad reality that gay marriage is not legal in a significant portion of the world. These things are depressing, but there's no reason not to acknowledge them and the truth, regardless of how shit they are.

Uh, yes, child pornography was legal in Japan until 2014, it's literally one google search to confirm that fact, and he bought it prior to that year. And regardless of how you choose to term it, the material was legal at the time he acquired it, and legally his crime was not that severe, and his punishment was in accordance with this crime.

And again, for the nth time, I'm not defending or downplaying pedophilia, I was simply making the facts of the case clear. He is a shitty person without a doubt, and I've chosen to avoid his work as a result, but I believe that you don't need to distort or be misleading with the facts to point out someone being shitty. It is important to acknowledge and stay true to reality.

Obviously yes, pedo shit is bad, I never claimed otherwise. I was simply pointing out that A) there are degrees of crimes here, and B) the author wasn't given a slap on the wrist technically, as due to the fact that the material was formerly legal, independent of how shitty that fact is, means that his crime was simply not returning the material when he was supposed to, which in a legal sense is not that significant.

Maybe try reading what is written instead of immediately jumping to conclusions and falsely claiming I'm defending or downplaying pedophilia.

Ive been watching the remake as it comes out and I cant quite put my finger on why it isn't as good as the original even though the animation is cleaner and better in the fight scenes.

I dont know if its the nostalgia talking.

With that said, im also enjoying the remake.

For me, it feels more “cartoony” than the original. The original is dark and dingy and gives the fights weight IMO.

Just watch the fight against Saito, in the original you believe they want to murder each other, in the remake it just feels like a typical anime fight.

There was plenty of trash anime back then too, so part of this is probably just selection bias from comparing generic anime released in the last few seasons to the best anime that stood out amongst decades worth of older content.

Although obviously there is a *lot* of poorly written trash being churned out at the moment... so maybe it's a bit of both.

Kenshin was huge (for a bunch of countries besides japan as well) in the late 90's early 2000's. If it were not because of the author issues (read it on the other comments) the remake would had been pretty popular too

Diolinguo is not that great. I recommend getting a nice guide for handwritten hiragana/katakana and write them down on a paper until you get them. Some jplt/noken 5 practice youtube videos or podcasts. If you want to use regular books Genki series is excellent for basic level.
