Hi, I'm looking for an anime that my 57-year-old father might enjoy. Something that's primarily fun and funny, but with a mature enough plot to keep him interested...any ideas?
Hi Content-Ad-5647, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

Attack on Titan

AoT is not fun and funny. It can get pretty heavy.

Uchuu Kyoudai
CheeseEaster2025-12-26 15:28
It's a classic, but I know it'll work and it did work for my 63 year old mother.
Cowboy Beebop
Ebirah2025-12-26 18:01
Or *Samurai Champloo* if he prefers a historical setting to SF.
kalirion2025-12-26 18:37
Or Space Dandy if he wants more on the funny side.

Haikyu well it's a good one too

Crayon Shin Chan

Princess mononoke. Mature themes and some great battle scenes.
Mob Psycho 100, Tri Gun, or a more serious anime being Cowboy Bebop. I also googled and chatGPTed fun and funny anime with mature plot, Gintama was the top answer on both for me. I haven't seen it so I don't know. Hope you find something.
chickadee-guy2025-12-26 15:42
Cowboy Bebop for sure
No-Fox19872025-12-26 15:42
Something your father might like is:
Cowboy Bebop: partly comedy, but with strong characters
Death Note: not a comedy, but a very good and mature story. For many, it's the best introduction to anime.
Monster: mature story, but no humor
Spy x Family: comedy without being silly
Which genre might he prefer?
Connect-Albatross-202025-12-26 15:47
I would disagree about Spy X Family. Love it to death, but it’s silly as hell.
AnybodyMassive16102025-12-26 16:34
Yeah - the silliness goes to 11.
maverickhunterpheoni2025-12-26 15:43
Maybe odd taxi.
DibsOnThatBooty2025-12-26 15:44
Depending what your dad likes, Cowboy Bebop is likely similar to a lot of other media he enjoys. Plus it’s just amazing.
_Cross-Roads_2025-12-26 15:45
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
You and your dad will thank me later. Make sure you don't miss the second season for the full story. You know what, I'll even drop the link for yah.
Hope you have fun! It was unexpected for me, but me and my wife absolutely enjoyed it!
Initial_Pen_81592025-12-26 15:46
SPY X FAMILY or ATTACK ON TITAN. It's super funny & light hearted. He will be enganged throught the show. Also, there are no explicit scenes. So, you'll not feel embarrassed.
The_Whitest_Grape2025-12-26 15:48
GTO maybe?
_femme_962025-12-26 15:48
Star blazers!
OldSoul19912025-12-26 15:50
My recommendation would be Trigun. The old trigun not the new one lol. Trigun is best for those who like westerns/syfy and likes funny moments with some serious themes later in the show.

Oh, let me make another, I just remembered a more recent one that dads might enjoy:
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
Give it 3 episodes and tell me your dad will not like it?! Come on, I dare you! Since its the holidays, let me link it for you
Grave of the fireflies. Its a film, but it is a sure fire way to develop that connection that animation can illicit strong emotion.
If you're looking to avoid trauma Princess Mononoke is also a classic for a reason. Solid characters, writing, and art all around and a more adult themed story.
yagami_92025-12-26 16:02
Great pretender
dinero2620032025-12-26 16:05
natsume book of friends your father would be crying every other episode
Shifter15892025-12-26 16:07
I find hunter x hunter very engaging. Lots of fighting and adventure. And as far as anime endings go I find this series ending the best I've ever seen in a anime.
BothTransportation252025-12-26 16:08
Gintama is actually exactly what you’re looking for however it’s like 400 eps
Physicist_Dinosaur2025-12-26 16:31
Monster
AnybodyMassive16102025-12-26 16:36
Frieren is a good choice. I think the dub is pretty good as well - if that helps their introduction.
terminalslayer2025-12-26 16:41
Attack On Titan, Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer, Black Clover
SeverenDarkstar2025-12-26 16:43
Hunter x Hunter

I am 59 yo. Log Horizon or Gate
Belter-frog2025-12-26 17:31
Golden Kamuy
It's over the top and wacky at times, but the story is quite mature and revolves around the slowly dying indigenous Ainu culture in northern rural Japan and the effects of modernization, cultural homogenization, and a gold-rush in the early 1900s aftermath of the russo-Japanese war.
Many of the characters are traumatized veterans, escaped convicts, and Ainu all searching for a rumored hoard of treasure.

Inuyashiki for sure
It's about a guy around his age who gets a chance to become a hero of sorts and find some meaning in his otherwise depressing and unfulfilling life.
Be warned it's pretty sad though and also full of very graphic violence
Edit: I missed the part where you want fun and funny. This is definitely not that.
Maybe try "Undead Unluck" or "Everyday Life Of The Immortal King"
jacobfrantzen622025-12-26 18:25
Watch Paripi Koumei.

Mashle is a heartwarming fun and has some solid action.

Kanokon
Aesthete182025-12-27 10:06
Yona of the Dawn is my favourite. It balances funny and serious. Great character arc
LagnalokNSFW2025-12-27 11:24
Do some Ghibli family watching and if they are ok with Japanese culture then you can move into things like Golden Kamui. Old folk love drama mysteries, but are they ok with Japanese humor? When they are primed through things like Golden Kamui you can recommend them some meta comedy like Gintama, Nichijou.
Things like Frieren, Delicious in Dungeon that are largely disconnected with japanese culture may be a safe choice too. Banana Fish and Bebop are ok, but nothing too extreme like Hellsing.
ThePupnasty2025-12-27 16:55
Black Lagoon maybe?
