Well, good for the fans. I read a few volumes, and it was decent generic shounen. I am not sure how the anime production looked. Maybe that helped things more so.

Popularity wise its manga sales actually do as well if not better than Gachiakuta. They were clearly hoping it would be a hit here in the West (I was at NYCC and there was a big inflatable there) and that didn’t work out but it seems to do well over there

Yeah, they even had it streaming on both CR, Netflix and Amazon Prime, so they really wanted to attract a big audience. The show was also sponsored on MAL for a while, meaning it would be the first anime showing up on the seasonal list no matter what order you chose. People just didn't care.
I only watched the first episode, but there wasn't anything remarkable about it.

Fairy Tail is just pure trash. Tougen Anki is way better. And there is an actual reason for the friendship that will be explained in the next arc. Basically, Oni are already powerful with superior physical abilities. The only method that they can get stronger is training their mentality. Oni's power is linked with their mental state. By bulding relationships and friendship, they fortified their mental strength and their will.

Copy is one of the more sensible ones, because it's just a matter of his own limitation on changing the forms of his bacteria into the forms he's witnessed. The gravity one or the barrier one are the really ridiculously nonsensical powers in terms of physics.

Yes, because it's important that if you're going to invoke pseudo scientific explanations for how an ability functions, that the pseudo science makes some sense. The idea that you could create artificial gravity by attaching bacteria to oxygen makes no sense in a lot of ways, but the clearest is because the weight of air isn't what makes us feel gravity. It would do crazy things to your breathing, and it would feel more like being underwater than having gravity increasing your weight and pulling you down.
