I'm glad that Season 2 has already been announced! The Nikko Kegon Falls Arc has been fun so far, and I'm excited to see it animated.
Being generic is one thing, but the story and characters are also bad and poorly written.
I can say stuff like Black Clover and Fairy Tail are pretty generic but at least they're fun.
It's not like it has a slow start, but rather, it feels like it has a very unbalanced start.
The story becomes much clearer later on, while creating interesting mysteries, which helps give it a sense of direction it didn't have in the beginning.
There's a lot going on, but it does feel inconsequential somehow. It picks up a lot after...like...yeah, where you are or a bit later, imo.
I also think the MC changes in a very positive way, both inside the story, but also on a meta level, at least for me. I do like him, but it took a while for that to happen.
Generic can be Fun even good if written well this is just not sadly.
One thing the series has been somewhat consistent on is that normal humans don't know anything about Oni or Momotaro and haven't chosen a side between them.
So that's something I guess.
>Somehow the oni exist all over with vast networks?
And yet twice so far they've needed to rely on teens who are still in training to protect them.
My point was if the Momo's are this comically evil and the oni are supposed to be this comically disadvantage it doesn't make sense for the oni to have underground cities, mass information networks, and whole islands. Worse they can seemingly get burned like they have in the two arcs to little effect. Two back to back insane resource intensive locations the underground complex, and the underground data vaults are useless now an oni would have to be suicidal to use a spot known to the momos.
Yeah, I just don't remember them saying anything like
that.
Because if there's one thing and I truly mean one thing the series has been consistent on it's that normal humans don't know about either of them.
Maybe they meant in their backstory, when Oni and Momotaro were publicly known but as is in modern day they're both hidden from humans
And you know despite my griping that Shiki and Mikado barely know each other, they're still the only characters with even an iota of chemistry between them, seeing Shiki's class reminded me of that, with how annoying they are.
And they're really trying to make Mudano into the Kakashi of this show, but like Kakashi was cool and actually had a personality.
Weird amount of…let's call them body hair jokes today.
This ended up being pretty good in my book, which I would not have expected after the much more lackluster first cour. Looking forward to S2.
Gotta admit something about Shiki calling out to Mikado like the beef never happened got to me, and I ended up enjoying this more than I probably should've.
And don't worry, Shiki, it grows out eventually! Also, the whole thing about dying young.
Overall, I quite liked this adaptation! I was certainly expecting it to be just promotion for the manga but the quality was pretty good, good VA's, and my personal best openings. I'm glad that it will get a second season!
The characters seem to be the only strength and that's saying something since it's only some of them that seem written with any effort others feel very one dimensional
The conflict doesn't work for the world there in. Many human would be siding with the Oni considering how often and how little the Momotaros seem to care about human casualties. Both major villains in both arc so fair either causally didn't care about to actively attempted to create human casualties. It's even implied this is normal for the momos. A throw away line in an early episode about Momo using oni blood for human medicine does not carry enough weight to justify ALL the human siding with the Momos. The fix for this is have both side actively trying to prevent the humans from find out for fear they'd just kill off both sides.
The power system been spotty, inconsistent, and seemingly just mad libs go at times yet somehow lacking imagination for many of the characters. In a show where it's random powers clashing but each person powers supposed to fit a theme that's not good. It makes it seem like the writer is just making it up as he goes along with no real plan for anyone's path. On top of that this 11th hour rewrite of Oni's going out of control does a lot more damage than the writer seems to understand. Marvel comic Mutants change the "live and let live" argument if casual use of your powers makes you suddenly and without warning or recourse become a nuke. Before the implication was berserk mode was solely a fight or flight response which just means the momo need to stop hunting them for peace. This new bit that at anytime it can happen again drastically changes things.
The fights the core of a show like this have been amazingly hit and miss some of them really good some of them like the 1st arc boss battle utterly terrible. I'd even say the end of the battle in ep 23 was terrible sorry a space ray gun? Your power been guns real ones. Twice now you've explained this is powerful because you'd have to understand the gun inside and out to make them work from the different power sets, and such mental work is almost unheard of. Fictional gun don't have any of that that so now your outright ignoring your own power system and it's rules to quickly end a fight. That's bad writing
Then there the arcs themselves the plot villains have been over the top evil to the point of causal death and Cruelty. Yet we're now trying to set up "honorable people" inside the organization. Yet 3 of our so called "Good" I guess there the suivors implying anyone that gets away from our sensei character does so with his blessing. One was a big titty girl who enjoyed crushing children and people with her box powers, Two battle manics that seemingly don't care about anything but killing Oni. Then we get to the 4th that's lead to this conflict who seems to be an unreasonable psychopath. Refusing to listen to our lead refusing to engage casually killing oni till now Only after getting his ass kick is he suddenly like OK maybe I was wrong? Then the biggest whopper after all that unreasonable his excuse for why he now believe the mc was innocent is "there'd of been more damage". No there wouldn't be if Our lead was a mass murder with gun power normal mobsters wouldn't of been a threat and he'd still of used a minimal amount of power.
TLDR it's not a generic show it's sadly a bad show that has insane promise but a seemingly very inexperienced writer who seems to not be thinking ahead with there story at all. A large amount of "because i said so" in the plot make the world feel unnatural and fake the character and power system seem to be written out as the story happens leading to off theme and something just wacky uses.
Other than that, I enjoy watching this show as mindless fun. The cast interactions and jokes are good enough. Hopefully the writing gets better.
It's not the best show ever or anything, but the writing is clearly improving with time, and the characters are likable. The power system is as consistent and makes as much sense as any other. They control their own blood to fight, and their personal biases hold a large part in how that blood forms.
And you know despite my griping that Shiki and Mikado barely know each other, they're still the only characters with even an iota of chemistry between them, seeing Shiki's class reminded me of that, with how annoying they are.
And they're really trying to make Mudano into the Kakashi of this show, but like Kakashi was cool and actually had a personality, Mudano is just monotone
Certainly not great, but absolutely decent.
If one accepts that this is just a bit on the generic, edgy and...shallow side, I think it's a fun watch.
The world is also pretty interesting overall, the Momotaro power explanation is fun and while these elemental powers feel a bit off and don't mesh well with the setting, I can accept this.
I wonder when we'll get a second child of Kishin, I would assumed they could be the cliffhanger, but apparently not (be it a new character or a known character showing signs of an awakening)
I do like the Oni powers aside from that, though...not really a big fan of guns personally, but it's alright.
I love the umbrella and the random power was neat as well, plus, I will always appreciate when a series shows how vital healing, recon and other support abilities are.
I know it's simple, but it's still important and weirdly enough, many better series do not manage that (e.g. one of my favourite things about Black Clover is precisely that: The support powers, especially during the better parts of the manga, contribute meaningdfully to solving the problems posed by the plot)
Some moments when talks/story is really dragging on and they could have simply cut corners but it was fun overall.
Well at least I'm caught up in case season 2 rolls around. The music was banger though.
