* **Christmas Club Bonus!**
Which character handles their difficult decisions the best in this episode?
Commentaires
Welcome to the 2025 Christmas Club Rewatch of Toradora.
Your one and only year-end review.
This year’s rewatch holds a special place in my heart as it officially marks my 10th Christmas Club rewatch. That means I have been participating in this annual rewatch 10 times, with this being my 9th year.
That means next year will mark 10 years on Reddit :D
Instead of dissecting the show like I normally do, I’d figure I’d give some overall thoughts on each episode while also sharing some of my memories associated with the threads of each individual episode. This will probably be shorter than normal, but I figure it should make for a fun trip down memory lane.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I am watching the dub, by the way.
Well, well, well. This is certainly a dramatic episode.
You remember when I said everything besides episode 19 was just gravy? This is certainly some premium gravy right here.
This episode is really all about two scenes: The Ami and Minori confrontation, and Taiga confessing to Ryuuji. Peppered throughout, we also got some other pivotal moments like Minori getting Ryuuji's gift but thinking Taiga gave it to her and Ami's conversation with Ryuuji. That's probably the most transparent she's been with someone.
I love watching people see the Minori and Ami scene and pick sides. I find myself at times wavering between feeling sorry for Minori and empathizing with Ami. My take on it is what Ami is saying isn't wrong but it's how she says it. She shows total disregard to Minori and she kinda loses the ball in her court. It's a great scene because you can understand where both sides are coming from. Ami has a point, but does she have to air Minori's dirty laundry out in public like that?
But yeah, the big development is Taiga confessing to Ryuuji. Of course, Ryuuji knows she did, but Taiga does not. It mirrors Minori seeing Taiga cry and call out for Ryuuji when she didn't know anyone was there. Now, two people know her feelings for Ryuuji, including Ryuuji herself.
I do know the first time I saw this scene, I was squeeing with joy. I was so happy Ryuuji knows now Taiga's feelings. It just sucks the thing that brought him closer to the truth happened to be Ami confronting Minori with her own truth. And in Ryuuji's case, it's a truth he has to keep to himself.
This is a phenomenal episode and one of the defining episodes of the series. It is the perfect accompaniment for episode 19 and I think you can make the case of it being better than that episode in terms of drama. It really feels as if things will never be the same again.

**Toradora quotes of the day**
"It's kinda hard to believe you're good at anything, Haruta."
"Not bad, Minori. You're a natural on skis." -- One of the last times Ami is complimentary of Minori
"It's no use, Taiga. It doesn't matter what I say. Or do. I have to face reality now. Kushieda's never gonna accept the feelings I have for her. She's pretending that whole conversation, the one where I didn't get to tell her how I felt, never happened."
"Don't dangle your hairy ass over Takasu's face!"
"I'm all gassy! I can't keep it in my butt!"
"I found a slightly damp towel."
"I went and said something I totally shouldn't have. But that's what happens when you don't speak up."
"You know nothing about nothing."
"Nice act. I almost believe you."
"You know how Minori rejected you? It might be my fault. A while ago, when you weren't around, I said something mean to her. Don't ask me why I said it. Because I don't know."
"I'm stupid too, and I hate myself for it. I'm not honest about my feelings either, so I keep screwing everything up. And now, here we are."
"If I find her, I swear I'll never let her go again."
"I can't stop... loving... Ryuuji..."
We have the same tastes for top 2 episodes it seems!
I have both episode 19 and episode 21 in my top 10 best anime episodes of all time.
It really looks beautiful. Honestly I would love to go on winter sport someday even though I know I'll end up injuring myself somehow.
I love how Ryuuji makes a comment about Taiga not knowing how to ski yet he didn't either
I don't get Taiga's reasoning here, like okay Ryuuji asked if something had happened that made her not angry at Kihara and then she mentioned the shrine stuff but like why would that make her not get angry at Kihara? I mean I know why but from this context it's just confusing
Honestly I'm kind of on Kihara's side, like what she does in terms of trying to be with Kitamura isn't any of Noto's business. Like if Kitamura minds he could say that but why would Noto complain about it
Okay Ryuuji I'm not going to be mean or anything okay maybe I am, but maybe you could... you know... TRY. You have given it zero attempts.
Okay I just don't get it about Minori saying Noto is trying to help Taiga out because Taiga likes Kitamura (well, because Noto thinks she does). But does that make it fair to be like that to Kihara? I mean, two people liking the same person that happens but don't they both deserve a chance in a way? I mean okay if you make an argument about Kihara trying too much; if she doesn't then it goes the same as with Ryuuji when he never even tries at all and nothing ever happens. (end of rant no but seriously while I get it I don't think it's fair for Noto to be so mean to Kihara just because he values Taiga liking Kitamura more than Kihara liking Kitamura)
Okay 1. why would Taiga give the hairclip to Minori without saying who it's from or giving it to Ryuuji for him to give? 2. am I the only one who's facepalming and slamming my head against the desk from Ryuuji's behaviour. So he was down thinking Minori didn't like him, Taiga became independent and told him to find out how Minori feels, then he doesn't try, then the first time he has a chance is at the worst timing (especially with everything going on with Noto and Kihara) and now he's back at the 'having no chance' again? Why does it even bother me so much?
Typical Ryuuji behaviour wanting to immediately go into cleaning and organizing mode. Anyways, why the hell did Ryuuji pull Taiga inside the closet? If he didn't do anything wouldn't Taiga just responded to the other girls and not checked the cabinet? And even if she would've, she could easily just make a sound in the cabinet as well
Okay on one hand I get Minori as a person and why she did what she did, however aside from that, I also get Ami. I don't agree with what she does but she does make a good point. Ryuuji should at least know he has no chance (aside from circumstances) because it's not fair for him not to get a clear response. However, of course it's not for Ami to say, that's cruel too. So while part of her I get, I think she's also going too far. And I'm going to say the same like last year, Kihara weren't you fighting with Noto earlier? (although mostly it was Noto but still). Also what's even more crazy is that Ryuuji and co. heard everything
So they didn't hear it? The girls JUST left the room, surely going out the closet like that would make sound for them to hear? Eh, nope. They didn't hear it
Honestly, I do like this moment from Ami, I'm not sure what she was exactly talking about but at least 'apologizing for it' in a way
I know Ami is genuinely annoyed and pissed and stuff, still that reaction is pretty extreme to not accept it was an accident. Honestly, I really don't like seeing people fight, it's pretty sad but with everything going on it's understandable
Okay I get the hairclip is important because it was Ryuuji's gift to Minori. Yet, Minori doesn't even know about it, and it's just a hairclip. Like I think it's really nice of Taiga to run after it to find it, but I also don't get why she would go out of her way to find it back. If Minori knew it was Ryuuji's I would've understood it more, but now...
Going out in a blizzard, call me either a coward or selfish, but I would never for any classmate or colleague go out to look for them in a blizzard like that
The fact Ryuuji saw that was pretty impressive. I mean with all the snow and probably semi-panicked inside spotting it... props to him. Anyways, why didn't Ryuuji want either to go with him? I mean, wouldn't it be smarter if he didn't go out there all alone?
Well Ryuuji feel a bit better about it, technically you didn't leave her all alone, she ran off. There's a difference
Okay I can be very "rude"/non-thoughtful and say, thinking about it, why did Ryuuji say nothing? Did he want to think Kitamura saved her (before Taiga confessed her love for Ryuuji) and if so why? Aside that, I wonder, at this point what was Ryuuji really feeling? Anyways, now I can refer to Taiga loving Ryuuji because now it's confirmed
\-- Endword
Yep. I don't know. I think most I would say here would be a repeat of what I already said. Anyways, while I don't like fighting, I did like this episode. And it was a good one to rant over some people's behaviour. Anyways, still don't get why the hairclip is that important if Minori doesn't even know the hairclip is from Ryuuji but maybe I'm looking at it from the wrong side. I really do feel for a lot of characters this episode. I just hope next one most will feel better.
This has zero to do with being an accident or not. The sledding was an excuse to let loose at Minori with all the feelings she couldn't the night before. Sooner or later the two were going to have it out because they both want Ryuuji, it just happened sleding made the excuse sooner.
All the emotional/tonal transitions in this episode are so nuanced even when they are explosive.
There are more fireworks going on over here than the strike of New Year's.
I wanted to mention this since it's not in the anime.
This is a great episode in terms of bringing the drama to the forefront. It makes me intense and uncomfortable every time I watch it.
I think it's important to Minori because she sees it as a gift from Taiga. I think you're overthinking it a bit.
It was still thoughtful of them
I see it as them trying to cover their tracks
The thing is, who's to say Ryuuji has no chance? Minori seems to like Ryuuji, if anyone is being denied a chance it's Minori doing it to herself.
And of course Taiga doesn't say anything because she likes avoiding the issue.
She just wants her friends to stop hurting each other. Like, I get it. Could she have handled it differently? Yes, she could've. But these characters need to wake up and face reality.
It's a situation where you can understand where both sides are coming from.
I think Taiga sees the hairpin as like a symbol of her friendship with Minori. That's why it means so much to her. If Ryuuji can't use it to get together with Minori, then Taiga can use the hairpin to repair her friendship with Minori.
I think that shows how much Taiga loves Minori. She truly loves her with all her heart.
Because-- say it with me folks-- he's thinking with his heart and not his head.
It reminds me of episode 8 when Ryuuji was drowning and Taiga was the only one who noticed him.
Running away, as per usual. Like everyone else in this show.
I kinda feel like Ryuuji now sees Taiga as someone he wants to be with. But I may be jumping the gun in my assessment.
You sound like one of the characters in this episode :P
The snowy setting served as good foreshadowing for the snowstorm later.
Taiga's parents? Not teaching her how to do something? Shocker.
I don't remember the context so I can't really say anything.
These teenagers are always sticking their noses in other people's business.
In fairness, Minori doesn't seem in the right mindset for anything.
I think Minori saying Noto is trying to help is her way of like making herself feel Taiga is maybe over Ryuuji? Maybe? Minori is a mess right now.
So, the LNs of the scene is way better and way more clear what is going on. This scene is the moment where Ryuuji kinda falls out of love with Minori. It's meant in my opinion as like a parallel to the school assembly scene from episode 16 where Taiga falls out of love with Kitamura but I don't know if it's conveyed the best.
But yeah, before Ryuuji didn't know what he should do about Minori but seeing her with the hairpin made him decide he shouldn't be with her.
So, Taiga can't ski. Fair enough. It's hard.
Lol he can predict what she's going to do already.
She's blushing!
And so everyone is bickering...
And so that's caused her to cry.
Ok...
She knows everything about Taiga?
Oh, Taiga have Minori the gift Ryuji intended to give her for Christmas.
So, the guys are concerned about him.
And so now they understand the situation.
And so they're ransacking the girls room.
Lol Ryuji can't keep quiet when Taiga is being like that.
And so now he's pulled her into the closet.
Hmm... Perhaps not all is well with Minori.
Huh. How did Ami find that out?
And so now they're all out of the closet.
What's Ami doing with the snow?
And now she's having an argument with Minori.
Uh oh, the hairclip!
And so off goes Taiga to go look for it.
And now they've got to look for her.
So, Ryuji found her in the snow.
Oh, she thinks it's Kitamura who found her.
Questions:
1. Ryuji?
Well, something resembling it
Add another point to her parents douchebaggery.
He's probably not far from accurate
She regifted it. Kinda.
Finally, the characters are talking to one another.
What makes you say that?
Taiga probably told her, no?
And Minori's feelings are out of the closet as well.
Her best
"Mom! The children are fighting again!"
[](#flyingbunsofdoom)
Things reminds me of parents in some countries letting the kids sleep in the snow while bundled up.
So, was the idea Taiga was gonna say she loves Ryuuji to Kitamura? Was she trying to show him her heart belongs to someone else?
Yuri's Yoho makes me think of Yohalo from SNAFU lol. And I love that we see Minori being a badass skiing, and of course the model has experience with these sorts of activities, probably has done shoots at Ski resorts in the past to give her chances to practice. Meanwhile Ryuuji is bad at everything that isn't chores and Taiga is a menace to society. Also decided to watch today's episode on my big monitor and with my good headphones, so listening to Silky Heart with higher quality is nice.
The two arguing over how each is failing to hit on their crush is so cute here. Both are right as well, for the current stated goals. And Taiga not getting pissed at a girl throwing herself at Kitamura is so fun to see, and Ryuuji being lost in his own crush issues doesn't understand and starts poking a bear he's not ready to hear roar.
And we've still got classmates trying to help our sweet palm-top tiger claim Kitamura's heart for her, or at least to defend his heart from wanton attacks. And Ami from the top rope. She has her own immaturity issues but she's really good at seeing and calling out everyone else's, and she isn't wrong here. Kitamura being/playing dumb is not good for anyone here and only going to hurt people.
Ryuuji giving up on Minori for the wrong reasons makes me sad here. He should be making chances not waiting for them to appear, but frankly this is his subconscious knowing what his conscious mind continues to deny. But Minori shows up anyway! Except she's worried about making peace between others because in this way her and Ryuuji are two peas in a pod: trying to make sure everyone else is happy.
The argument over who knows Taiga better is interesting. Not because they are coming at it from different amounts of information, but because they are both filtering it through their own expectations. Minori is obviously more correct at this point, but part of it is her wanting Taiga to have someone as caring and capable as Ryuuji to take care of her friend. It just happens she's accidentally right.
And... Taiga gave her the hair ornament without telling her where it was from (or at least so Minori claims, I don't remember if she's lying here). I can't imagine how Ryuuji is feeling right now knowing that. He talks about it in his head a bit after, but frankly this is only the part of his thinking that he can access on the surface. [Toradora] >!He's also wrong but he won't figure that out until it slaps him in the face.!< And of course Kitamura feeds into his exhibitionist tendencies to force Ryuuji to admit he's faking sleep lol.
It cracks me up Kitamura at least did not notice he has had feelings for Minori all this time. But of course the saint of broken hearts would drag him to find out why the rejection. God the girls' room is awful rofl. And of course Ryuuji wants to clean it up, he's been this way since the beginning of the show when he begged to clean Taiga's apartment.
Watching Ryuuji react to Taiga being a slob makes me laugh. This has to be triggering every parental instinct in him. And then he has to drag her into the closet with him (no not that way).
Girl gossip is _WILD_. And Minori lying about what she "knows" about Taiga's heart. I love how the other girls want Taiga to just claim Ryuuji so Kitamura is free, but suddenly Minori revealing her feelings by shutting up, with Ami calling it out because she really, really wants to stir up this hornet's nest since Ryuuji is too much of a coward to do anything.
I always love girls talking about relationships like they are here, it is such a fun trope moment.
Always interesting when the story just starts laying out the actual facts and removes all the subtext and artifice (well sorta, obviously there's a lot of subtext coming off Ami still, but a ton is getting peeled away around Minori and her feelings.) And we get the other girls playing ref... only for Ami to put the mask she's mostly been keeping off during her apology. It is so interesting watching her face as she makes a decision and slips it back on for this moment.
Ami here is playing vulnerable while also lying through her fucking teeth. She knows why she said what she said to Minori. She's trying to eliminate competition. But she cannot admit that to him because Ryuuji simply isn't ready to accept her feelings. And Ami being pissed here is so funny for the girl who keeps lying to everyone unless it is in whispers they don't hear (see: the conversation in the closet where she admitted she wanted Ryuuji to like her but refused to say it louder when he didn't catch it). Also it is fascinating Ami believes she has the right to be told others deepest feelings. But she does admit to her guilt which is a step forward....
BOOM!
While this fight is not as animated or violent as the sword fight, I'd argue it is just as emotional. Two women in love with the same guy are finally having it out over that fact. And it ends only because they are getting held back, just like that fight. Except this time Taiga's gone missing because she went looking for the hair ornament Ryuuji bought for Minori.
Of course Minori, Ryuuji, and Kitamura would go looking for her. The three people who care about/love her the most in this world.
Fuck. When Minori got ready to go down after Taiga, only for Ryuuji to grab her wrist, I get misty eyed. She sees the determination in his eyes, and the mixed emotions Minori has to be feeling at seeing that (even though he'd do the same thing for her if Taiga and Minori switched places, but I don't think she understands that). Funny that he finds the hair piece first.
Him carrying her back with Orange playing in the background... chills. Except in her state she thinks it is Kitamura... and we get our second unintentional confession of the episode.
Everyone is vulnerable by accident. People keep hurting each other because it is easier to lash out when you feel vulnerable. This episode is such an emotional gut punch.
I can see that lol
All in all, a typical opening
> Also decided to watch today's episode on my big monitor and with my good headphones, so listening to Silky Heart with higher quality is nice.
Very crisp, I take it
I like Ryuuji's little impression he busts out. I assume it would stack up against Ami's 100 or so impersonations.
I think Kitamura is genuine here, which is honestly sad.
Realistically, you can't be with someone if you aren't factored into their priorities. It kinda is what it is.
I do love how much Minori loves Taiga. It's sweet even though it comes at the expense of herself.
So, Minori isn't lying. In a scene from the LN that was cut for time, she finds out it originally belonged to Ryuuji as he's discussing the hairpin with Haruta after having just come back from rescuing Taiga.
You know, like you do.
Ryuuji seeing Minori with the hairpin probably feels worse than when she rejected him.
I think Kitamura not knowing shows how much he prioritized his relationship with Sumire. It's like everything else paled in comparison.
Ryuuji really is acting like a father to Taiga here lol
Drastic times call for drastic measures
And it's done with such brutal rawness in this case.
The animation of Ami as she's calling Minori out is incredible. Such great body language. The emotion in her face is unreal.
I mean, is she really lying? Like, yeah, she wants to be with Ryuuji, but I also think she's legitimately trying to look after Minori. Because she doesn't want to see her get hurt like how Ryuuji has hurt Taiga by stringing her along.
I would say Ami is fighting on behalf of Minori to face her feelings the same way Taiga kinda fought Sumire so that she can face her feelings.
Very well said. Not much to add here.
You really in this instance see truly how much Taiga means to Ryuuji.
Such a phenomenal scene. Probably a top 5 scene in the whole show.
Which is kind of funny when you consider Taiga unmasked Ryuuji during the bear scene to thank him, even as Ryuuji does not unmask himself to her after her confession in this moment.
I think this episode serves as like the resolution of Taiga saying Ryuuji is hers in episode 8. Before, she could deny it, but now, she no longer can.
She unmasked Ryuuji, and what took Taiga to unmask herself was basically a concussion/misunderstanding.
I would argue it's more emotional than episode 19. Like, it's not as sad as Taiga realizing her feelings, but it's upsetting to see characters who care about one another either be at each other's throats or worlds apart mentally.
* The snow didn't hype me as much as those guys but then again I live in a snowy region and the wonder of the first snowfall usually is gone before this point (Barring the White Christmas) but unlike the cold snowy feels of the ski resort the drama is heating up once more (Some might even say it has never died down)
* Yike a short person in a snowstorm - I have seen a couple of storms that would eventually bury Taiga (And even more that would get her stuck with snow halfway up to her chest) and this is why having some way to find each other or help is important during the winter
This is why even the very hint of snow leads to a lot of preparation.
Meanwhile, where I live Christmas was like 70 lol
I still am quite enamored with snow but that's because I've only seen it like 4 times in the last 5 years.
It's really been heating since Taiga's dad re-entered the picture thrice. Like, we haven't slowed down much since.
They finally arrive at the mountain to practice winter sports. Ryuji and Taiga don't know how to ski; Ryuji is learning with Kitamura, and Taiga is riding a sled. There's a bit of laughter before the drama begins.
Minorin receives the brooch from Taiga that Ryuji was going to give her on Christmas Eve. She ends up liking the brooch and promises to take care of it. Ryuji seems confused by several things.
By trying to act brave, Ryuji and the others find out things they shouldn't have, but they do anyway. Here we see that Ami and Minorin are both reaching their breaking point, and although they supposedly forget about it, that's not really the case.
Then the next day, things finally explode between them (I know they don't hate each other, but their minds and hearts are racing), and they let out everything they've been holding back. It's worth noting that although it's not as long as Taiga and Sumire's fight, Ami and Minorin's fight is also epic because both fights carry a very strong emotional charge.
During the fight, the brooch flies off, and Taiga, determined to save the day, decides to look for it but gets lost, making everyone feel bad. Finally, our group decides to look for her on their own, and Ryuji finds her, half-conscious. But this is where the other bombshell drops: Taiga's confession.
This episode is definitely very emotional, and everything here becomes even more emotional, that's all I'll say.
It's probably the most emotionally charged episode of the series.
The calm before the (snow)storm
For starters, this was supposed to be his gift.
It's hard to when the tension is that palpable.
And we have a better connection with Ami and Minori than, say, Sumire, so it means a lot.
This is probably the biggest development in Ryuuji and Taiga's relationship in quite some time.
It feels like we're only getting started, which is kinda crazy.
Beginning off… everyone’s at the mountain’s! Haruta’s pretty good! A few of them are! I can relate to Ryuji there. Taiga’s sledding instead? Not a bad idea 😅 Woah?! Are they okay??? 😭
The introooooo! Too good! (I listened to it yesterday for hours 💯🎧)
Moving on.. Taiga & Ryuji are sure getting along 😂 as always! Oh no! This argument between Kihara & Hoto, is sure… not the best. What’s the whole situation here?? Oh boy…
Everyone’s in not-the-best mood. Ryuji leaving and Kushieda joining, and Minorin just going about the whole thing with the others…oh well. And the hair-clip, oh gosh. Poor Ryuji…
Oh gosh, haha! Good plan!
Oh!!! He tells the boys about his crush! Why are they going to the girls room? No! Why?! 😭… why’s Ryuji cleaning… ooh!
Ha! Ryuji pulling Taiga in at a surprise is too funny! The boys just listening is too much!!! Oh boy.. what’s this between Minorin & Ami. I don’t like this part… oh gosh. How DOES Ami know this. Minorin’s angry bc of it, and all the boys and Taiga are just.. surprised.
Yeah come on. Stop the unnecessary drama 😭
After they leave, all of the guys just gotta forget it. Ami’s gotta chill a bit though, they all do.. aaaand another sled hit! Oh boy. And again… this fight. I don’t like this! Their fight is something unexpected…. Oh God.
OH! This whole next part, oh boy. Taiga noticing Minorin’s hair-clip flying off and running out for it… this part’s so sad yet SUPER important and impactful.
Ryuji noticing that he let Taiga out of his sight… nooooo….
The blizzard…. Oh god. Ryuji and the others going out is good, but Ryuji going to get Taiga and she her is… GOOD. Ryuji stopping Minorin is so good.
“…if I find her, I swear I’ll never let her go again.” - when you hear THIS, could it be… [Toradora! Spoiler] >!Ryuji cares about Taiga (obviously), BUT, maybe… he wants to… take care of her FOREVER?!< 🥹
YES! Ryuji finding her and carrying her to safely is too good! Ryuji staying silent… and letting Taiga talk… and what it is that Taiga confesses… 🥹❤️🩹💯
Honestly, the end. Another GREAT episode. I like the ending of it a LOT, and sure, I am not too much of a fan of the the fights between the characters in this episode, but because of a few things that I like more, or love more (especially the ending), those moments carry the overall rating for me… I might do a one-final episode ranking on the last day, who knows.
Anyyyywayyyy, love this episode. That’s all!
My Favorite Quotes of this Episode:

2. “I did it again. I left her all alone. She was right next to me and I didn’t even notice she was gone. Damn it she’s such a klutz.. if I find her, I swear I’ll never let her go again.” — Ryuji
3. “…I can’t stop.. loving RYUJI!” — Taiga (carried/saved by Ryuji when she thinks it’s Kitamura).

Can’t wait to watch episode 22!! 4 more to go!!!!
I like the fights if only because it's getting the characters to confront their feelings.
Bummer
It's okay, you're still here before a lot of other people.
That technically counts as a hit **Proceeds to add it to the list**
That's quite a lot lol
Noto, not Hoto
Yeah, for real...
They are trying to get Ryuuji to be more assertive with his feelings.
She probably knows because of her various conversations with Taiga.
If anything, what Ami is doing isn't that different from the boys coming over to the girls room.
Is it unnecessary? I would say it prevents future drama from occurring.
Ami really isn't doing anything wrong other than having the wrong approach. Like, Minori needs to be confronted.
She cares so much about her 😭
Ryuuji is realizing what matters most to him.
It's sweet, but also it's this "I wasn't supposed to hear this" kinda feeling.
Toradora was one of the first romance/drama anime I watched. And I struck gold with that choice.
Ryuuji preventing Minori from climbing down to save Taiga is quite similar to Tomoya‘s instinctive protective reaction in Clannad episode 18. both reveal the way they feel more clearly than words have up to that point.
And it all builds to the end as well which is great storytelling.
It wasn't my first, but it's probably what led me to love tsunderes.
Dub re watcher here
On my second time watching, I appreciate Ami more. Yeah she can be harsh and arrogant, but in the end she just wants everyone to be direct and honest with each other. All this hiding and denying feelings isn’t healthy. It’s best to just be direct with people and come clean. I can relate to Ami quite a bit.
I’m on her side in her fight with Minori at the end of the episode. Minori has only been hurting Takasu by pretending that what happened on Christmas Eve night never happened. He deserves better.
She had the right intentions, she's just a Godawful messenger.
Overall, it was another exciting episode, although none of the characters' love lives went smoothly. After rejecting Ryuuji, Minori acted as if nothing had happened and casually wore the hair clip Taiga had taken from him, which deeply hurt Ryuuji. Ami watched helplessly as the train derailed, unable to do anything but vent her anger on Minori. Taiga tried to forget that she had ever liked Ryuuji because she was the biggest obstacle to Ryuuji's pursuit of Minori. Even Kihara cried more than once.
Drama CD 20. Everyone Together
When everyone went to see Minori's puppet show, Minori discovered that the narrator had fallen ill and missed work. Ami offered to help. The show was a story about a white tiger protecting the forest and a black tiger threatening it, culminating in the two tigers developing a friendship and making peace – a coming-of-age tale. As the show ended and the audience applauded happily, Taiga suddenly ran away. Ryuuji found her. It turned out that when she was little, she had gone to an amusement park with her parents. Although she was initially happy, seeing her parents' gloomy expressions ruined her first amusement park experience. From then on, whenever Taiga saw other people's smiling faces at an amusement park, she felt alone. Ryuuji corrected her, telling her she wasn't alone, and then Minori and the others ran to find them.
CCB
Kitamura, while everyone else was stuck, encouraged his friend to ask Minori directly if she liked Ryuuji, which also helped advance the plot.
This is a very emotional affair
Poor Taiga :c
**Episode 20**
>Sometimes, I wish everything would just to burn to the ground.
Relatable king.
>And then the whole thing just burned to the ground!
Prophet.
I get where Taiga is coming from, especially considering her feelings for Ryuuji. But ugh.
Minori continues to make me concerned. Her suddenly becoming happy feels like another calm before the storm. And Ami becoming more rude with Ryuuji is definitely a worsening omen.

**Episode 21**
🎵 ~~Running up~~ Going down that hill! And make a deal with god!🎵
Is skiing a common activity for the Japanese youth?
🎵They be like ~~Smoove~~ Kitamura? What? Can you teach me how to ~~dougie~~ ski?🎵
Feel so old remembering that song.
Could not pay me to chaperone teens in their overnight trips. It was pure drama as a teen. I don’t want to see what it’s like as an adult.
Why did Ryuuji’s eyes look like a gundam coming online 😭
Ami may be a mean girl, and we knew she knew who was really in the room (well, Taiga, I suspect), but she is moving the plot along, proceed 🍿
Hoooold on, hold on hold on. Is this yuri? Is this yuri in this?
She’s gonna go off alone and being a missing person, isn’t she?
Aaaaaaand there is is.
Why not call the police now? This doesn’t feel like a “wait and see” sort of situation.
This is giving AOT winter training vibes.
Oh Taiga 🥺

**Additional Thoughts**
Just the entirety of both episodes had me so upset for these kids. I know that HS romances will, of course, focus on teens being teens, but I can’t help but look at Taiga and Ryuuji’s homelife and speculate about others’ and see how they’ve compounded into all the actions the characters take.
It’s unfair that Taiga has learned with her relationship with her family that the best response to all these conflicting emotions is distance. It’s unfair that Ryuuji had been adultified at such a young age that he is in constant “I need to fix it. I need to be reliable. I need to be needed” and how that leaves him immature in other areas of his life.
Ami and Minori were standouts with their argument. It feels like the way Ami was pressing Minori’s buttons was less frustration at the situation and more of a projection onto her own ongoings that Minori might more visibly mirror. So I’m curious how those two will interact in upcoming episodes.
Taiga’s confession happening while in some compromised state and accidentally saying it to the target of her love—what a steeple in romances. This feels like the kid version of how many romances I’ve consumed where the MC gets skunk drunk and confesses accidentally.
But what will Ryuuji do with that information? And will Taiga even remember this confession? (I doubt.)
Feels like it’s time for Ryuuji to weigh and reassess his own feelings. And I’n waiting for Yasu to drop some pretty good love advice to her son for this.

**CCB**
It’s a tie between Taiga and Ryuuji for me.
Beside Minori and Ami, Taiga also has a both shocking and great scene in this episode. The stubborn Taiga who was dead set on getting Ryuuji and Minori accidentally confesses her love to Ryuuji. Which was all done in a very emotional and beautiful way. I particularly like the line"Take these feelings away, make me stronger", showing just how much she has been hurting due to keeping her love to herself. On top of all the drama that was going on between Ami and Minori, Taiga's own inner conflict goes to complicate things ever more, particularly for Ryuuji.
I think this episode is probably the best Ami and Minori are written the entire series. They're believable in their frustrations and anger.
Just like how episode 19 is an important episode in Taiga and Minori's relationship, this episode is an important chapter in Taiga and Ryuuji's relationship, probably the biggest development in their dynamic since episode 8.
I love how Ryuji is both perceptive enough to notice the change in Taiga toward Kitamura yet to dense to put 2 and 2 together.
Minori's comments about Noto, Kitamura, and Kihara hitting close to home for someone. Then there is that sly move by Taiga with giving the barrette to Minori.
In another life Kitamura would definitely be an exhibitionist.
I love Haruto being the ultimate bro and chiming in that he would date Ryuji if he was a girl.
I do wonder how much of Kitamura's plan to just to blow things up in the open was due to his conversation with Taiga from Christmas morning.
Break into the girls room and of course Ryuji can't help but clean.
That Ami face. You can just hear her screaming BS in her head while Minori plays dumb. Which makes her calling her out inevitable. I do wonder if the other two were not there if Ami could have actually gotten thru to Minori. They kind of stopped it before a breakthrough could take place.
I also wonder if it was Ami listening to her friends or if she noticed Taiga's towel. It appears that she looks and sees it once or twice towards the end of the scene.
So I feel like Ami is referring to "Now you don't have to feel guilty" but this is partially why I struggle with that scene. I'm not saying Ami was not being mean in that scene but if anything it should be freeing for Minori. Granted Ami does not know about what Minori saw on Christmas eve so I guess that may explain why Ami thinks she caused the issue. I guess maybe I just talked my way thru it but I'm going to leave this in instead of deleting it.
Ami being mad at herself for being stupid is real talk. I've been there and done that.
Everything boiling over like this hurts to watch. But with the way everything was building up it was bound to explode sooner or later. If I was Ami I would have assumed ill intent also if I'm being honest. And there goes the barrette.
I'm willing to over look it because I love Toradora so much but when they can't find Taiga and nobody thinks to look where the fence clearly got knocked over right by where she was last seen just makes me face palm.
Man this is just another ending that it's just a killer emotional ending. Ryugi vowing not too leave her alone again. Taiga spilling her heart thinking that Ryuji was Kitamura because of the snow goggles. Cassandra Lee Morris absolutely kills it in the scene. How can you not get emotional watching it?
u/Holofan4Life I know I've mentioned your posts last year convinced me to get the LNs but I want to especially mention that on this episode because it was the missing/changed scenes for this episode that really pushed me over the edge into wanting to buy the LNs.
I still think this is a great episode, but there are little details about the LN version that puts it over the top for me, like I feel in Ami's conversation with Ryuuji you can tell the frustration she feels over her handling of the situation.
It's probably fun to do with a group of friends.
Who's to say he isn't in this one?
I'm sure Ryuuji felt great about that lol
Wasn't their conversation New Year's?
But yeah, it's possible.
There's a strong possibility because we've already established that Minori holds Ami's opinion in high esteem.
It's possible she said this knowing everyone was in the closet.
I think Ami reflecting on what happened thinks she could've been more supportive of Minori. The way she said the guilty comment was like she was intentionally hitting a nerve, which she's done a few times before.
Ami in this episode is kinda my spirit animal.
It was nice while it lasted
The banter between the boy and the girl in the beginning and kitamura being oblivious
Kitamura prank on ryuji
Ryuji telling his feelings to his friends
Ryuji and taiga over heating what the girls are saying
Minori and ami arguing
The search for taiga
And ryuji find out about taiga feelings
9/10
Had some mashed potatoes 5/10
TIL there are actually quite a number of people who reply to the rewatch threads later than me, which is interesting
"Why aren't you asking Kitamura to teach you?" yeah Ryuuji still doesn't understand. Wait Ryuuji is actually pushing the issue. He may be getting closer to figuring it out
Kihara and Noto fighting over Kihara's usage of tricks to get closer to her crush, which is a parallel to what Taiga and Ryuuji have been doing this entire time with their respective crushes. it does make you wonder though, if this trickery and insincerity can also apply to the relationship between Taiga and Ryuuji. Are they using tricks and excuses to keep hanging out with each other? (It's a question because I don't know, I think living close to each other is a valid reason)
Kitamura asks them to stop fighting, and then Ami calls him oblivious. Thing is I don't think Minori and Taiga have exactly been fighting so the parallel that's being displayed here is not very obvious. I'll keep thinking about it
poor Haruta is absolutely clueless and oblivious. And possibly Kitamura too, he definitely knows something serious is going on around him but he might not know what exactly it is
"Takasu-kun, do you know why Noto-kun wants to stop Maya-chan's love?" oh wow. erm. Minori wants to stop Ryuuji from liking her because it's insincere? Minori wants Taiga to stop running away from her love for Ryuuji because it's insincere?
oh nevermind it's completely different. "Noto thinks Taiga likes Kitamura and he wants to help Taiga" which fits very nicely into the dynamic between our trio right now
Ryuuji thinks Taiga does indeed still like Kitamura (but if so what changed to make Taiga so comfortable talking about Kitamura? he hasn't realised yet) and then (has the gall to) say that Minori probably doesn't know Taiga as well as him.
And yeah we can recognize that as galling and very presumptuous but honestly I think every teenager has a moment like that where they realise "oh hey turns out other people know way more than I realised", and that sort of shatters the worldview you used to have. I think, anyway. Maybe there are people out there who never had the self-centered misconception that they are smarter than everyone else. I had it though (and my friends have had it too). So this could definitely turn into a learning point for Ryuuji and a major milestone in his maturation
Minori confirms that there are things Ryuuji doesn't know by revealing that she has the hairclip he wanted to give her. Taiga gave it to Minori (symbolising the things Taiga tells Minori but not Ryuuji) and transforming the hairclip from a representation of his feelings for Minori into the bond between Minori and Taiga
"I'm talking about the hairclip, not myself haha" Minori once again putting herself down
yeah and it makes sense that Ryuuji would come to the conclusion that Minori can't accept his feelings. that's what she wants to say after all.
hooray Ryuuji is *finally* talking about things with someone! (also somewhat significant because in order to open up to someone about your problems you must believe that they have something valuable to offer you - i.e. that they might know more than you)
and boys being boys, they go and mess around in the girls' belongings (proving that just because you're with others doesn't mean you'll automatically be smarter or wiser HAHA)
Ami being very mean right now to force Minori to confront the dilemma that's facing her - pretend that nothing is wrong so she can continue being with the boy she likes, or absolve her guilt by letting Taiga be with Ryuuji and condemning herself to her fate... (which is certainly not an easy decision)
in the end though, the boys didn't get anything they could have gotten from elsewhere by observing Minori's reactions. I think that's a good way to handle this incident, because I do kind of agree that if Minori isn't willing to explain it to Ryuuji, there's no way she'll be willing to explain it to anyone other than her closest friends. So maybe don't try and trespass into others' personal space. (edit: and then to further prove my point Ami just tells Ryuuji everything that happened. that is to say, this entire attempt to peek inside her mind was pointless. which is in itself a very valuable leaning point)
And then Taiga and Minori crash into her and now all the important people in this arc are gathered in one place!
and Ami's guilt for her actions yesterday is spilling over, because how do you stop a speeding sled exactly? although getting hit by that must hurt yeah (the scene is played for comedy probably to make the viewer discount the reasoning of being hurt and angry in order to focus on the much more important guilt that is simultaneously motivating her actions). Minori doesn't actually dislike Ami or hold any sort of grudge from yesterday (I think, anyway, Minori doesn't strike me as the sort of person to do so) but Ami thinks she does. Why does she feel so guilty about her actions from yesterday? She still doesn't know. "You came to mess things up because I was having a chat with Takasu right?" and that cuts to the heart of the issue
oh hold up are we going to repeat the scene we saw at the start of the episode? genius
mad respect for Kitamura to take the initiative and move in
and Taiga running off to retrieve the hairclip... and knowing these characters, I don't think Taiga would care all that much if the hairclip represented her bond with Minori (as Minori herself thinks). She probably thinks of it as Ryuuji's feelings for Minori. That's why she must return it. One decision and a few seconds adds a lot of complexity to this mess of a situation, once again, my respect (this time to the director and author etc.)
and now Minori runs out to put herself in danger because she feels so guilty about how her actions hurt Taiga - which is, once again, a perfect encapsulation of her feelings. and in her brashness, she doesn't realize she's hurting herself and not being very responsible and aware of those around her (what if she gets lost herself? she's going to cause so much more trouble for everyone!)
how exactly is Taiga still alive? in a snowstorm for a few hours
and we get another representation of Ryuuji and Taiga's relationship. he goes to get her when she can't help herself. meanwhile Minori is nowhere to be seen... Minori's feelings must be in a mess. Ryuuji goes to look for her while dissuading her from going herself. Which once again solidifies her perception that Taiga and Ryuuji ought to be together.
and then Taiga reveals that she likes Ryuuji
I was about to say that nothing very much changed this episode, but we the viewers have a better understanding of all the dynamics amongst our core characters presented in brilliant ways. but then this happened. things will have to change now. Ryuuji will need to confront what this revelation means (Taiga likes him, does he like Taiga? what about his feelings for Minori? why was Minori so confused?) while Taiga tries to deny anything (probably failing in the process) and Minori continues to struggle with her guilt.
I was also about to say that this might be one of my favourite episodes in all of Toradora, and that is absolutely still the case. The numerous parallels occurring with the other relationship off to the side as well as the symbolism regarding the hairclip is a slick narrative tool to refine the viewers' understanding of Minori, Taiga and Ryuuji's relationship while forcing the characters to confront their feelings toward each other (even if nothing much changes - at least outwardly. but by bringing these emotions and conflicts to their awareness, the episode paves the way for more dramatic change to come). The narrative parallel with the beginning and end of this episode ending in an argument is a great touch. And there are some genuine moments of personal growth and awareness I relate to in this episode - Ryuuji realising that other people might know things he doesn't, confiding in his friends about his problems, etc. Very important character moments - Minori's confrontation with her emotions, Ami becoming aware of how complex her emotions are. And something novel and interesting to take away from this show as a whole, "perhaps what girls are talking behind closed doors is not as valuable as you might expect compared to paying attention and being aware of them in your everyday interactions". Who knows.
Anyway really really love this episode
I think this is probably the most interesting Ami and Minori's characters have ever been. Ami is trying to help Minori by being more assertive in her feelings. Minori is like trying to help Taiga by being off to the side and let things take its natural course. And what we end up with is this irresistible force meeting this immovable object.
The storytelling in this episode is simply fantastic and the Ami and Minori conflict is some of the most gripping drama I've ever seen in an anime. I could watch this all the time and I would still be on the edge of my seat.
I feel like Ryuuji has shown to mature since the events of the culture festival. I think he's now more willing to listen to Taiga. But having a better understanding of one person doesn't necessarily translate to a better understanding of everyone.
And in Ryuuji's case, he can trust Kitamura his best friend.
Well here is one of my favorite episodes of the entire show! I remember just absolutely loving this one when I first watched it. “Kinda hard to believe you’re good at anything Haruta!” Damn Noto 😭. I ski just like Kihara and Ryuuji, not great. Ami and Minori having fun, kinda interesting to see knowing what happens later in the episode. I love how the crew looks in their winter ski gear. The characters designs are nice with them. Ryuuji beginning to see that Taiga isn’t as interested in Kitamura anymore. Well Taiga isn’t the only one getting mad. Ami being perceptive again. “You’re acting all weird like everyone else..” poor Haruta around the drama lol. The conversation between Ryuuji and Minori is an interesting one. There’s the hair clip. I really like the next scene. We see the guys be a bit worried about Ryuuji and then play a funny prank. A nice moment of the guys being guys, wish there were a bit more. He then confesses, I love Kitamura’s reaction. Kinda just reminds me of hanging out with friends back in the day when I was a teenager. I love Ryuuji snapping into cleaning mode lol. “Control yourself Takasu! You’re not here to clean!” And now Taiga. Ryuuji cringing watching her spill lol. Held hostage. Girl talk time, all the guys eavesdropping is funny. Here goes Ami. Probably should’ve let Minori tell it if she wanted to, if she didn’t want to she would’ve left it as is. Well they all heard too much. Poor Haruta so confused, I like him calling Ryuuji “Taka”.
I really love the next scene with Ryuuji and Ami. Nice to see her be a bit honest with him. I remember liking how the manga did that scene a lot. More Taiga sledding. Ami instigating a bit again. Uh oh fight. “Bitch!” Ryuuji just speechless. Not the hairclip! I am surprised they lost sight of Taiga so quickly. Nice of Ryuuji to volunteer to search with them. And there’s the shine of the hairclip. A look is all Ryuuji needed to convey his thoughts to Minori. “I did it again.. I left her all alone.” I like the piano version of Orange there, honestly never noticed that. And now a fan favorite scene which is of course one of mine too. The ED playing just makes it. “He’s always the one who comes to my rescue.” Ryuuji just being stunned as he listens. “I can’t stop loving Ryuuji.” An official confession of her thoughts and Ryuuji now hears it too. I remember thinking that moment was just beautiful the first time. What a great episode. Humor, emotion, and storytelling just intertwined perfectly, something this show does so well. Honestly that episode might be my favorite, definitely top 3. Thanks for reading always!
Baka Taka
It is so good because Taiga confessing her feelings should be this heartwarming, feel good moment. Instead, it is anything but.
I like episode 19 more because it's episode 19, but the stuff between Ami and Minori is some of the best writing between the two of them. And of course there's the all time moment at the end.
while it doesent it snow at my place, there used to be an amusement park back in the old days that had artificial snow, oh well that place got burned down to the ground, looking at you Ms Yuri
we didnt have that many Ami + Minorin moments
huh i just noticed, most of the shots here in Silky Heart had them all alone by themselves, compare that to Pre Parade where a good chunk of the shots are all of them happily hanging out
2:55 that Taiga face, i feel like this shouda had been very memeable
are all these coats school issued? do they get to keep them? looks like it can get real expensive for the school real fast
once again commending how good are the compositions of each shot here, like every single one of them
MINORIN HAIRPIN
oh god this scene, even me here watching in JP not understanding what is being said, this is still so absurd, even i woulda had been super disturbed by that
Ryuuji CLEANING mode
i feel like camisoles are super underrated as a fanservice outfit, like yeah swimsuits, bunnysuits, or just plain underwear are good an all but theres just something about camisoles, while it covers more skin, is just much more alluring to me, maybe its because it kinda emphasizes the skin that isnt covered while still showing off the body shape,
Ryuuji having an internal breakdown over Taiga's habits when he isnt around
Haruta is covering his own mouth lmao
is that how you are supposed to hold a qtip??
we rarely ever got Amin + Minorin bonding moments and it had to be like this?
Ryuuji + Minorin bonding for Taiga once again?
seriously tho how the hell is almost every single shot in this show is just compositioned so good
oh the gear are rentals, of course
"its kinda hard to believe youre good at anything Haruta"
Minorin the super sports girl, theres nothing the world can throw at her that she cant conquer... ...hmm conquer, conquest...conquest route...wait a minute
also that shot of Minorin with the hairpin in this op
Ryuuji is so happy to have something in common with Taiga
Ryuuji doing a Taiga impression "...before releasing it on everyone"
a snow filled drama episode
seems like Ryuuji is starting to have the same headaches that Ami has
wait, why do i feel like the gems?beads? on this pin is familiar now i got to look at it closely in all my rewatches, *looks back to the earlier episode* ok ep03 - 4:16 i guess the colors looks similar??
YES ITS CUTE you are Minorin
"no other girl named Minori Kushieda" yknow im pretty sure we came across anime chars before that had the same first or last name (maybe they had different kanji tho idk) like ive come across characters named Yui at least four or five, or *thinks about it* prolly even six times now, i feel like ive come across another Minori only once, Kushieda, none
"hell if i where a girl id totally go out with you" same here
this is why telling your homies your crush is a HUGE mistake
he talked a while there before taking note that theres no one around
"i found a slightly damp towel"
they had an ONSEN moment and we NEVER got to SEE it??!!
the cream here says Rafflesia, is this the same cream Minorin was smelling, like, i never smelled one my self but im pretty sure rafflesia flowers are supposed to stink
"i dont know anything about anything there" earlier she just said she knows everything about Taiga
those two are super in sync on Ami's reveal
i feel like Ami and/or Minorin woulda had stayed there, oh well lucky for the boys i guess the girls just dragged them into the quest to find Taiga
i want *nosebleeds* Minorin to kick my ass too
Ami here in a bad spot too, seems like she just wants everyone to settle down before she makes her move, which never happens for her because everyone is just way too confused over their feelings, shes the one doing that will they wont they game all this time
the classic cowbell comedic flash transition anime trope
id like an ice cream too
but Taiga's the one controlling(?) the sled
ok so, remember when i said i watched an analysis video of this show and pretty much spoiled myself before i watched it, but i dont remember if this scene was on that analysis video, or if it was there, i forgot about it and just stuck to the Christmas Eve scene, so when i watched this for the first time i pretty much went in blind, so when this happened im like "HOLY shit she SAID it!!!! she ACTUALLY SAID it!!!! and NOT just THAT, he HEARD it TOO!!!!" and yeah i was absolutely ecstatic at this absolute reveal
Also super late to this one, and this one is very dense emotionally. It almost feels like there’s some ticking time bombs that went off today. Minori and Ami fighting, Noto and Kihara fighting, Taiga admitting she loves Ryuuji. A whole lot happens today.
This honestly might be in my top 3 favorite episodes.
Episode 21. End of the Ski Trip arc, so all that's left is the Valentine's arc. Oh boy, did I mention how HEATED this episode gets?
I really procrastinated writing this one. I had to collect my thoughts kinda. So, yeah, don't mind me just casually falling days behind the rewatch threads lmao.
Alright, we've arrived in the mountains.
All the 2-C people are admiring the sights, except for the one guy complaining about their gear.
Yuri gets them all pumped for skiing though.
Haruta skis pretty expertly it seems. Adds that he's better at snowboarding.
"It’s kinda hard to believe you’re good at anything, Haruta!"
Most deadpan roast ever, but okay. I mean, I don't think Haruta cares.
Kihara and Nanako skiing side by side.
"It’s weird. I haven’t skied since middle school, and it’s all coming back!"
This might be the only Nanako lore drop in the entire show, so that's cool.
Minori, meanwhile, plows through the snow. And Ami compliments her, which Minori returns. Oh boy, if only they knew the kind of drama they'd be getting into later this episode...
Somehow I think it makes sense why Ryuuji doesn't know how to ski. Considering his home life, doing chores while Yasuko works every night, something tells me they haven't gone on vacation to the mountains much.
But yeah, while Kitamura is trying to instruct him, Ryuuji trips and falls over. And then he gets run over by Taiga in a sled 'cause he fell in her way. Well, that's one day to do a cold open. Gives me similar vibes to the Episode 16 cold open when Taiga smacked Yuri with a mic.
Picking back up, Ryuuji is rubbing his nose after getting run over. Turns out, Taiga has to be on a sled since she doesn't know how to ski, which Ryuuji proudly flaunts his own inability and the two banter about the pointlessness of skiing.
Ryuuji suggests Taiga go to Kitamura for lessons, but Taiga flips it back on him and tells him to go to Minori. Ryuuji is still very flustered by Minori and obviously still isn't sure how to confront everything with her after being rejected.
"…Loser. I guess me declaring my independence from you was all for nothing."
It will be by the end of this episode, technically. But on a more serious note, Taiga is continuing the development she had in the last episode, where she is trying to distance herself from Ryuuji for the sake of what she thinks will make Ryuuji and Minori happiest: them confronting their feelings for each other.
Taiga and Ryuuji notices Kihara and her partner-in-crime Nanako once again putting into action a plan to get her with Kitamura.
Ryuuji makes a funny impression inspired by Taiga from Episode 18. But unfortunately for Ryuuji, Taiga's feelings for Kitamura aren't quite the same since she gave them up and her admiration of him waned in favor of feelings for someone else.
Taiga is unamused, but Ryuuji ends up asking her if anything happened between the two of them.
Love how Taiga immediately gets flustered, not because Kitamura was mentioned, but 'cause the time she met with Kitamura was the time she confessed her feelings for Ryuuji to him. She obviously avoids making eye contact with Ryuuji in this context, 'cause of those feelings and the fact that she feels like she can't show them to him since Taiga believes Ryuuji and Minori would be happy together.
Ryuuji doesn't buy for a second that nothing happened though, and ends up getting Taiga to reveal that something did, in fact, happen. Taiga omits the part where she mentions her feelings to Kitamura and asks him to make them go away, of course.
Taiga is super defensive here, because she absolutely does not want Ryuuji to go prying any further into what she just said. She obviously didn't tell him 'cause she didn't want him to know she was in love with him, but she can't say that and ends up becoming super defensive. She's also blushing here, again 'cause she's trying her best to hide her real feelings whenever they're emerging, like here. Once more, Taiga realizes she's in love with Ryuuji, but because she truly believes in him as a person, she thinks he'll really be happy following the love she knows is shared between him and Minori, as Taiga tries to accept the fact that she'll never have someone to tell her she is loved, even though it hurts.
