People NEEDS to watch Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers 2199

This is the greatest remake of all time. It’s FAR superior to the original. The original is still great especially for 1974. It’s basically the first TV anime that’s sophisticated and adult interest. The reboot has been around since 2012, still goes on to this day and no one is talking about it. This anime needs some recognition. Akira Yamamoto (2199 version) is my favorite character in the whole franchise and I hope she survives REBEL 3199(current season) and beyond. People that watched Evangelion or any other Scifi anime SHOULD and NEEDS to watch Space Battleship Yamato both original and 2199. There would be no Evangelion without Yamato. The franchise in general is Hideaki Anno’s biggest influence.

As of this post the 2199 series is on what they call Rebel 3199, which is their take on Be Forever Yamato. They are slowly getting there.

Watch order for those curious:

Yamato 2199 (Remake of OG Season 1)
2202 Warriors of Love (Remake of OG Season 2)
2205 (Remake/Retelling of the Yamato: A New Voyage movie)
3199 (Remake/Retelling of Be Forever Yamato and kinda OG season 3 also)

you should create a [WT!] post but using the review flair and maybe I’ll check it out :)

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 00:46

I just switch the flair. Sorry this is my first time posting a place where it’s big.

How many episodes are left before it's finished?

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 00:49

12 more but the next part won’t be release until February. They release them in theaters in Japan but when they release it around after like in streaming service or whatever, they edited into 4 episodes each time. So if they keep doing those wait to release in theaters, it won’t end until around late next year.

Learned about the remake from Super Robot Wars V. The Yamato in that game was peak.

I’m about 5 episodes into the actual series. It’s been fun. Good ol’ classic sci fi. Need to find time to finish it.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 01:26

Absolutely and keep on watching it! So much fun!

chili012025-12-27 03:54

I love the battleships in the SRT games.

That moment when your battleship’s MAP weapon is lined up perfectly

penguintruth2025-12-27 02:05

Hm, I wouldn't say it's superior to the original, but it's quite good. It's lacking some of the heart of the original, especially the relationship between Kodai and Captain Okita. But it does better with representation and fleshing out the enemy.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 02:09

The female characters including Yuki are a lot better than the original as well. Not to mention, they handled the plot and pacing a lot better. Okita lived a lot longer in 2199 than the original version did. Analyzer in 2199 is WAAAY better than the original and not to mention the original Analyzer is a creep.

BasroilII2025-12-27 04:01

I will agree that it made all the female characters more compelling than the OG (including creating 1.5 new major female characters in the first season alone).

It does lose some of the comedy moments and silly bits of the original. Which depending on your feelings on those could be a good or bad thing. I also think 2202 went too crazy on the space battles- they scale up to a degree that's positively insane no matter how well the plot explains it. But that calms down more in 2205 and 3199.

The OG was the first anime I ever watched and still my one truest love in the medium. But I also have come to adore 2199 for what it does differently or better.

> I also think 2202 went too crazy on the space battles- they scale up to a degree that's positively insane no matter how well the plot explains it.

It's bit jarring when you get to 2205 and the battles scale down again. But at least the Yamato feels like a powerful ship once again.

Wasn't really interested in the reboot but I think I'll try it out a bit

I think the problems with reboots, usually, is that they rely way too much on the original material
I can't immediately think of a reboot, other than osomatsu-san and gridman, that I really enjoyed

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 02:19

Trust me, it’s really awesome. They really did an amazing job with it. It’s loyal but very different than the original. I’ve seen other reboots are AWESOME as well like Fruits Basket, Blade of the Immortal, Ranma 1/2, Hunter X Hunter etc

swva802025-12-27 04:03

Yes, a very good show. It was one of the first anime series I watched.

Spanky_H2025-12-27 04:04

One of the greatest space adventure shows ever made. Absolute peak.

in_her_drawer2025-12-27 04:46

> 2202 which is season 2 which is the weakest season

100% agree. It was so disappointing. Also agree that 2205 was better, and 3199 has seemed pretty good so far.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 10:30

I think 2202 would’ve been so much better if they didn’t change directors and creative team in general. I still love 2202 for the female characters especially Akira Yamamoto (SUPER HOT in the red bodysuit ❤️).

lC32025-12-27 05:01

I liked the first season but bounced off the second season; if it gets better again after that then maybe I'll have to finish S2.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 10:28

It REALLY gets better after that. Season 2 was worth watching for the female characters especially Akira with her red bodysuit (SUPER HOT in those suit ❤️).

Kevix-NYC2025-12-27 06:44

Is this the show I watch in 1980 called star blazers? I saw an online anime of I think space battleship yamato from japan on amazon a few years ago.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 10:25

Absolutely

Old-Frosting57982025-12-27 14:42

i know too much science to enjoy that show

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 14:49

Well congratulations

Old-Frosting57982025-12-27 14:53

I still watch it i wish i could enjoy it though

Peacemkr452025-12-27 19:58

There's also a live action version out there and videos of the Japanese Navy performing the theme song.

Local_Creme84662025-12-27 20:05

Yes but the live action film was just ok

bkendig2025-12-28 06:33

The live-action film was good! Okay, I hated that they replaced the Gamilas with space bugs, but I loved the Battlestar Galactica feel of the sets. And the music was great!
