Interesting *design* in anime?

I'm re-watching Madoka Magica, and now I've got a craving for anime that experiments with design the way that show did in the Labyrinths. Like, the show gets WEIRD with the visuals, with little bobble-headed bad guys with big mustaches and stuff, but it's all coherent and beautiful and alien at the same time.

The only other thing I can think of that shares that design focus is something like Persona 4? But I'd love to put more stuff like that into my eyeballs if possible. Suggestions?

Studio SHAFT is good for that, especially around that time period.

Anime directed by Ikuhara are pretty avant garde.

Yeah, Monogatari definitely comes across as visually experimental. I haven't watched Madoka Magica yet but it's on my watchlist.

Don't forget Madoka Magica's brighter happier counterpart that is Hidamari Sketch, especially season 1. It has the same director (Akiyuki Shinbou), same producer (Atsuhiro Iwakami), and even the same character designer (Ume Aoki) of Madoka Magica based on Aoki's own manga series.

City the Animation leans hard into different kinds of animation throughout the series.

Bocchi the Rock might also fit the bill, a lot of gags have an entirely different and unique style of animation that includes irl multimedia stuff.

Mononoke and Gankutsuou come to mind for surreal artstyles.

Gurren Lagann could get a bit weird with its art, too. There's even a couple scenes in the same artstyle as the Labyrinths in Madoka. And plenty of scenes do some interesting things with shading.

If you’re open to anime movies “Paprika” should be right up your alley. It’s arguably a big inspiration for Inception so they really lean into the dream world stuff.

In addition to the previous recommendations of Mononoke, Kaiba, and Gankutsuou, I'd also say that Kyousougiga; Kuuchuu Buranko; Tekkon Kinkreet; Metropolis; The Tatami Galaxy, The Tatami Time Machine Blues, and The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl; Windy Tales; and Kemonozume will all probably scratch the itch in terms of weird and experimental visuals.
