Will I be lost jumping in halfway through Gintama?
I have a friend I watch anime with every week. He medically can’t read subtitles so we’re limited to dubs. From what I’ve heard of the show I think he’d love Gintama. Sadly the first 265 episodes are either sub only or crunchyroll Aus doesn’t have the dub.
I wouldn’t normally consider this but given it”s nature as a silly gag anime is it the kind of show you can jump into from episode 266 without being completely lost?

Start from episode 3, you can watch the first 2 episodes later.
Sure you could piece together who is who and what's their job and background.
Have you consider go to high seas?
I'll bite.
The fuck you mean he medically can't read subtitles?
And it isn't even fully dupped to english as far as i know.
However.
Gintama has a LOT of characters and you'll be completely missing context on who they are.
Also, yes Gintama is a gag anime, but it also has story arcs mixed in with long term villains.
Then you can skip around 50-100 episodes because they are filler that only retell the first 200 episodes in a condensed way.
My partner and we really enjoyed it and later on watched from the start.
The majority of the show is one off silly episodes and sometimes they have an arc done over a few episodes.
Personally the one off silly episodes are the best part for me, and the main arc stuff are pretty good but not what I really came to love from Gintama.
Gintama main arcs are sort of fine and really stretched out over the whole series in terms of them making you truly care about his past and the events leading up to the finale, it’s very sporadic.
so honestly I’d say go for it, if you don’t like it and feel disconnected then move on, but allot of it’s random comedy episodes are their own thing and if I managed to catch onto character quirks jumping in mid way you will be able to as well.
