Clannad is the pure definition of ‘Evolved Writing’ - Finished watching Clannad: After Story…
The first season began with introducing character cast, peak comedy and goofiness, few sad character moments and love confession at the end of the season. It was a great conclusion, however there’s the second season left, the After Story.
First time watching, it was still similar to the prequel for 12 episodes focusing on side characters. Youhei being a scumbag for not caring about his sister, which he redeemed in the end. Then we got Misae’s backstory of how she met a certain someone who can make her wish come true. And then we have Yukine’s arc which is basically delinquents and all, it was least interesting for me but Yukine is there, so what? So basically the first 12 episodes focused on side cast, not even the VN route characters.
After all is done, the end of high school is near and Nagisa falls sick and so she has to repeat a year again, but she wanted Tomoya to graduate. Thus starts Tomoya’s adult life and earning money as electrician with Yoshino’s assistance. Year later, Nagisa was finally able to graduate and with chad dad Akki’s approval, our lovebirds finally get married.
The couples does what any other couples do, spend their time together, eat and sleep together, what more do you need in life? Ah yes, you need a child to start a family. And thus starts the preparation for labour. And…. yeah, just as Sanae-san and Tomoya thought, Nagisa couldn’t make it after the child birth💔💔. And Tomoya’s depression goes for five years hence forth and becomes a scumbag for not raising the child.
Nagisa’s parents are too kind for this town, they planned a trip just for the two of them, Tomoya and his daughter Ushio (she looks exactly like Nagisa). Episode 18, a tragic twist that shook Tomoya, realising that he was doing exactly what his father did. Negligence, shattered heart, and now with full determination to protect his daughter. “The places I can cry are the bathroom and in papa’s arms”💔💔, a beautiful heartbreaking dialogue by Ushio told to her by Sanae-san.
Then it was that time that Tomoya forgave his father, who had done a lot and sacrificed for him. And Fuko is back from the hospital but she doesn’t remember Tomoya and others, so what’s the point in hyping her up now. Anyway, now that Tomoya was able to move from Nagisa’s farewell, he continued to raise Ushio well, until it happens again…
Ushio’s fever similar to Nagisa, she was still a weak child so she would definitely die from the illness. With her death, Tomoya had given up everything now, his family gone, is this the ending he deserved? Man, I hate snowfalls now because of this. Hollup, we forgot that it has supernatural genre.
Yes, that hidden world with the Illusionary Girl and the Garbage Doll, winter is also going there as well, the girl would soon be gone but finally helped the Doll achieve his dream. It was the realisation to me that the girl was actually Ushio and the Doll was Tomoya in this hidden world. No wonder back then in season 1, Tomoya thought that he heard of that story before.
Idk what exactly happened but probably VN adaptation problem, but since Tomoya had collected orbs, he could finally make a wish. And that wish… was to let Nagisa and Ushio live throughout their lives, and thus it happened in a new worldline. And they, including everyone (Kyou, Ryou, Youhei, Mei, Tomoyo, Sanae-san and Akki, Kotomi, and others) lived happily ever after. I was extremely happy that Tomoya finally got his wish true and he did not regret meeting Nagisa back then.
I just gave a quick summary to the series, so yeah definitely full of spoilers, that’s why I gave the spoiler tag. All I want to say is that I enjoyed Clannad, both the seasons, to the bottom of my heart. The AS episodes 16-21 is heart-wrenching, the dialogues were very heavy and detailed, the music placement, all brilliantly executed, just what Kyoto Animation does. This doesn’t feel like it’s done by KyoAni, it just gives such massive classic vibes.
This anime also serves as a reality check, as to how you love your parents, how you need to understand each other, and when you are going to have family, how you are going to deal with sacrifices and losses, and how you can move on from the death of your loved ones because there has to be something for you to protect and cherish.
I’ll reach the 20s next year, and thinking about all this, what if I were in Tomoya’s shoes? Would I manage everything, would I constantly grieve, would I be able to move on? Life is a huge struggle once you graduate from schools and colleges. As I kept thinking over these things, reality is often a pain and I can’t help but cry over what would happen to me in the future.
Okazaki Tomoya hated the town initially because it kept on changing throughout the course of time but he was able to love it because he had friends, family and most importantly his loved one, Okazaki Nagisa and their daughter, Okazaki Ushio. Would you hate the city/town you are raised in because of constant changes? I will answer this question myself. Yes, I hate that my city is changing but I still love it because that place was where I was raised, loved, cherished and I made friends, had fun and supported my family. Rn, I’m studying abroad but after my first semester exam ends, I will return back to my place for a few weeks and spend time with everyone who supported me throughout their lives.
Clannad gave me a lot of life messages, and this is honestly one of the best, if not, the best anime where the main couple marry and have a family and go through their lives. An amazingly written slice of life series. An absolute gem.
**ANIMATION: 10/10**
**MUSIC AND OST: 10/10**
**CHARACTERS: 10/10**
**STORYLINE: 9.5/10**
**COMEDY: NANDEANE?!/10**
**EMOTIONS: 9.5/10**
#FINAL RATING: (DANGO DANGO DANGO DANGO, DANGO DAIKAZOKU!)/10
Anyway, episode 23 of AS is basically one year before Tomoya talked to Nagisa for the first time. And the final episode is just the summary for the whole Clannad series. And Kyou Chapter didn’t hit that much, I didn’t like the love triangle. I mean I knew Kyou liked Tomoya from the beginning but she decided to help her sister for this.

Kanon (2006) did help a little but didn't really compare to After Story in the end.
Clannad came a little later for me and by then I'd already watched a few heartbreaking stories so I was used to it, but it was still very rough for me.
The 1st season only scratched the surface of the other routes. Especially Tomoyo, who got her own After Story.
Tomoyo straight up has her own entire full-length VN, "Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life" that happens in an alternate timeline after her route in the Clannad VN.
Really hope they announce an anime adaptation for it someday.
An adaptation of Tomoyo After's VN would take at least 24 episodes. That VN is an entire alternate timeline to Clannad After Story where Tomoya ends up with Tomoyo instead of Nagisa.
It starts off with Tomoya already a working young adult and goes from there.
IMO Tomoyo After is also far more sad and depressing than Clannad After Story. It's a fantastic thing to read/play if you liked Clannad and want more.
Unfortunately it is gatcha game with visual novel story telling but it has one of the best stories i read in my life
- one of the ancient Anime truisms
In the VN, you need to complete the arcs for every heroine, including the Nagisa ending with her death, as part of unlocking the true arc that we see in the latter part of AS. So the anime combined the majority of the arcs into season 1, but skipped the more romantic portions for some of the heroines, leading to them seeming like they got shafted in terms of content. So I would recommend playing the VN if you really like the series as a whole, it's officially available in English text too.
And if you enjoyed this KeyAni adventure, I'd recommend checking out the others like Kanon, Little Busters, and Air (this one can be a bit hard to grasp, and it didn't do the arc integration as well as the others, but it has one of the most emotional scenes ever). And all of them have great music.
And if after that you want more of such writing, you can consider giving Angel Beats and Charlotte a go ( Maeda Jun x P.A Works productions, Maeda Jun being the director for Air and CLANNAD, and one of the writers and composers for Kanon, Air, and CLANNAD). And if you're game for even more of such writing, you can also check out the Heaven Burns Red game, published in English by Yostar and available on mobile and PC.
Note: IMO Angel Beats suffered from the lesser number of the episodes, and Charlotte's plot didn't work well but it had memorable characters, so I don't recommend them as much as the KeyAni productions. There's also a 3rd Maeda Jun x P.A Works production but that was poorly done so I don't really recommend it.
About that, a fun fact: Clannad is the name of an Irish band from the 70's and 80's though they continued to be somwhat active until a year ago. They are one of my favorite bands, they created the modern idea of celtic music by experimenting on traditional celtic music and adding a more new age, ethereal style to it. The main band members were all family, and the name of the band originally was Clann as Dobhar ('Family from Dore'), which got later shortened into Clannad. The famous new age singer Enya was also family with the members of Clannad, and was part of the group for a some time before going for a solo career.
The name of the VN and the anime is clearly inspired by the Irish band. I used to get really annoyed that when searching for Clannad songs, all I got in the first results was content about the anime, after watching the anime myself, I got it, Clannad is a truly great anime (but I still think the band deserves more recognition). Not sure how accurate this info is, I probably read it in Wikipedia, but as far as I remember, the creator of Clannad named the VN after the band due to a slight misunderstanding. He thought the name "Clannad" meant family, while the name actually means "Family from Dore", and if he wanted it to mean just "Family" he sould have named it "Clann".
I even joke reason I cant cry at other series cause "Clannad stole my tesrs"
