Ponczo1232025-12-27 11:41
Is that another one of those "I transfer to magic school and I'm OP as hell but I need to hide my power for reasons" type of anime?
noctaviann2025-12-27 11:46
Somewhat. Although the reasons for hiding the power are more realistic/plausible compared to the usual tropes.
GerHunterIB2025-12-27 11:48
Isn’t it also one of the ogs that did it, before the trope exploded.
noctaviann2025-12-27 11:50
The first season was released in 2014, so I guess you could call it one of the OG.
Ponczo1232025-12-27 12:31
When you said 2014 it finally rings a bell I remember watching first season but it was so long ago I didn't even remember what the series was about
wjodendor2025-12-27 13:57
The web novel started in 2008 and the light novel started in 2011
nirvash5302025-12-27 11:49
It's one of the first ones that did it, and he has a legit (political and national security level) reason to hide his power.
CountProfessional5092025-12-27 12:22
What’s the reason for hiding his power?
LeastSample2025-12-27 12:33
His power is limitless. He can disintegrate any material, he can heal fully any wound or damage to non living objects if the damage was done within 24 hours in seconds. And his power material burst converts mass to energy at 100% conversion. He used a flag pole to create an atomic explosion. He could destroy the planet easily
nirvash5302025-12-27 12:34
He's a Strategic-class Magician from the Ten Master Clans of Japan which kinda run Japan.
He's literally a walking nuke. Japan's government knows he is a nuke and uses him as such as a Special Officer.
So, he got the triple whammy of being a Strategic-class Magician, being a member of the Ten Master Clans, and finally being a super-secret Special Officer so the existence of his power is an absolute secrecy of the highest kind.
He enters this school and enrolls as an engineer so there is also no reason for him to be showing off about him kicking ass.
discuss-not-concuss2025-12-27 12:35
he’s a national security threat to other countries and a political threat to his family
hiding from countries gives him peace of mind, while hiding from his family allows him to gain an edge
noctaviann2025-12-27 12:39
\[Mahouka spoiler\] >!He has incredibly unique magic. Like WMD class magic, one of only 50 or so in the world. From a national security POV of course the military wants to keep his powers secret. You don't want your enemy to have the location of your nuke carrying submarine.!<
\[Mahouka spoiler\] >!In addition to that there's the internal power balance between the various magic clans in the country. He was born into one of the more powerful and ruthless clans in the country, too powerful according to the other clans. So if there's yet another powerful magician in that clan, the other clans might take action against him.!<
emon1212025-12-27 12:12
It also have "i love my sister" Incest trope but it got in lore reason
gnerfed2025-12-27 12:23
I just remember it being there, what is the actual reason?
emon1212025-12-27 12:28
IIRC because of the human experiment make Tatsuya only have emotion towards Miyuki
nirvash5302025-12-27 12:40

0hran-2025-12-27 12:56
What a convoluted way to force an incest plot.
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 13:46
One one hand, true. On the other, this very arc explains those reasons to much granular detail. And they are reasonable enough where you can go "Ok, I dont have to like the incest part, but i can see why it was done".
abandoned_idol2025-12-27 17:11
Hopefully the fans are fans regardless of whether or not the story featured incest.
Incest was basically the most memorable story element here despite the fact that I find incest dull and unnecessary.
Knuckleheaded-beardo2025-12-27 17:12
You just described the job of 95% of Japanese authors.

Reason why I dropped this doodoo 10 years ago
wallyjt2025-12-27 12:23
I would say this one is one of the OGs that popularized this particular trope.
justmadeforthat2025-12-27 12:00
One of the better adaptations for skipping a lot of the source material, it sometimes read like Physics Textbook, with how much the author spends explaining his magic physics
Curious_North_84792025-12-27 12:23
How much do they skip exactly? The anime already spends half it's time doing exactly that lol
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 13:44
And you wish they spent the whole time sometimes ngl.
The magic system makes sense in the LN while in the anime it feels ????.
Tatsuya has an actual personality as well. In the anime he;s the fucking Ubermensch
Darwin3432025-12-27 14:16
Having only seen the anime, I can confirm that Tatsuya is the textbook self-insert OP MC with as much personality as a cardboard box.
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 15:02
In the LN theres whole ass paragraphs of him thinking to himself on how to best navigate a situation etc etc. In the anime someone asks him something, he looks hard at the character, they focus on his eye and he goes "Yes".
Like ok, its hard to adapt everything, I know, but it shouldn't be all or nothing
Oregonrider20142025-12-27 16:29
I wonder if the time slow thing like in the movie Equalizer would work for something like this or if it would be too much.
abandoned_idol2025-12-27 17:08
Are the side characters more developed and less helpless in the LNs? That's my main issue with the anime adaptation.
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 17:33
More developed, yes. Less helpless, not really?
Tho its more because they're out of their league and not because they're weak for their age.
Tatsuya has been dealing with international conflicts since he was a kid while using OP powers. Not their fault in the grand scheme. Even later they become people of consequence, just not to the MCs level for obvious reasons. You could be the Prime Minister and still have the Sword of Damocles called Tatsuya over your head who could nuke the country in half a second (this type of situation will tie to the new season).
wjodendor2025-12-27 13:55
The novel reads like a magic physics textbook at points
LaplaceZ2025-12-27 13:56
I remember reading the LN back in the day.
In 10 pages 9.5 pages would be and explaination how magic works, the historical events leading to the development of such magic, and the social and political impact it had. The remaining 0.5 pages would be what actually is happening in real time.
Firestarness2025-12-27 15:16
I also tried and stopped reading cause of that. It just gets boring after a while. I definitely find the anime more enjoyable in this case.
Curious_North_84792025-12-27 15:41
Somebody get yall a Mahouka degree if that's the case
EPLWA_Is_Relevant2025-12-27 19:26
It would be much more readable if it was structured like a textbook, in which the action were allowed to flow and then the context was in a bonus chapter or appendix or something that isn't so up-front.
brianstormIRL2025-12-27 12:48
I have no clue about this series, but this description makes it sound like an anime adaption of Sufficently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension series).
Zhaif1212342025-12-27 13:37
yeah, that light novel wasn't light at all
_Lucille_2025-12-28 02:10
The magic science bits can feel dull, but essentially the series is more of a science fiction LN crossbreed of sort of that is pretty unique in its class (authors like Shoji Gatoh of FMP has a similar style but not as deep).
Often times LNs sort of just rely on very simple rules, or just call things "magic", and those can get really brain dead.
The novels also have a whole lot of world building and political bits that younger audiences and those who are less committed probably struggle to absorb, but it is that depth that makes the series stand out. Essentially, this is a story that appeals to "weebs who are also giant nerds".
The anime and movie will make it a lot easiest for younger readers to absorb, but there is a whole lot to this than just onii-sama which people failed to understand.
PrinceZero19942025-12-27 12:18
Wow! This trailer looks good. Makes me excited.
n080dy1232025-12-27 12:36
This series continues to go strong after so many years despite the fact nobody I've ever talked to has watched more than like Season 1.
Lol_A_White_Guy2025-12-27 13:23
It’s been one of my guilty pleasures for years, but yeah. Not sure where the other fans are, lol.
bongmitzfah2025-12-27 18:15
We dropped it when the insest started
Lepworra2025-12-27 19:01
that's like the best part though
AutMcD2025-12-27 19:21
I concur
myherpsarederps2025-12-27 20:00
It must be doing well in Japan?
Lol_A_White_Guy2025-12-27 20:01
That’s probably the most likely answer.
I always hear it does well there but I never seen anyone actively talking about it outside of threads dedicated to it.
wjodendor2025-12-27 13:59
The novel sold like 30 million copies in Japan. Doesn't matter if nobody talks about it outside the country.
Firestarness2025-12-27 15:17
I’ve been keeping up with it since high school. Def a fun anime to watch and I like Tatsuya as an OP character.
ZeroZion2025-12-27 15:54
Hi. Tatsuya cool. Tatsuya is love. Tatsuya is life. Don't come for me, Miyuki!
We don't talk about the spin off with beautified Tatsuya.
noctaviann2025-12-27 16:03
[Huh?](https://i.imgur.com/3aq3Tee.png)
CuriousBroccolli2025-12-27 16:14
Season 1 was amazing, but so were the other seasons.
Season 1 was introduction and peak school action, hence the popularity. Other seasons focused more on politics and problems outside of school, and were released later when the genre grew so it suffered from other "similar" shows, as well as having to chew on information much(MUCH) more to understand the whole picture and magic systems, etc.
Still, maybe THE best in the genre. 3rd season that came out in 2024 was super solid, and had really solid production value.
1832vini2025-12-28 01:19
just remember that characters in durara had a van with miyuki's face on it.
BigWillBlue2025-12-27 12:38
I watched liked 3 episodes of the show and I remember it being absolute dogwater, but this trailer looks so well animated I might have to give it another shot.
3HaDeS32025-12-27 12:42
I don't get why The Irregular at Magic High School is so popular in Japan. Last time I was this surprised was when the Smartphone Isekai got second season
caternal2025-12-27 13:13
this is a series where japan is the strongest super power on earth, obviously they're going to glaze it.
Iron_Kingpin2025-12-27 12:44
Will this anime ever end, it's name keeps popping up after a few years, for an anime that isn't talked about much
noctaviann2025-12-27 12:51
We'll we're halfway into adapting the main LN series. And then there's the sequel and the spinoffs.
Iron_Kingpin2025-12-27 12:52
Damn
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 13:47
Thats the thing with LN's, as long as its popular, itll keep getting anime and most LN's have a lot of volumes so you have material for an anime for years and years to come.
Iron_Kingpin2025-12-27 13:51
I mean Mushoku Tensei's anime started in 2020 and it's about halfway done
noctaviann2025-12-27 14:01
MT has less volumes. Mahouka has 32 LN volumes for the main series vs 26 LN volumes for MT. Plus after the first season in 2014, the anime adaptation of Mahouka was pretty much dead until the 2020s, except for the 2017 movie.
DisplayHonest64652026-01-04 01:39
So this movie only covers the middle of on series?
noctaviann2026-01-04 08:13
It should cover just Volume 16 (out of 32).
DisplayHonest64652026-01-04 10:37
So you’re saying I should watch the movie then continue the next chapters? What about the manga is it in parallel with LN?
Nettysocks2025-12-27 12:52
One day I’ll watch this series
PotatEXTomatEX2025-12-27 13:42
Say Byeonara to the school part of the title lmao

Alabama is back on the menu boys.
iamthehob02025-12-27 14:17
Saw this show before I was aware "Guy who is perfect at everything" was a whole ass genre so it's got a special place in my heart for defining the trope.
Oujii2025-12-27 15:21
Not sure if you watched at the release, but at the time this trope wasn’t that common. Tatsuya is one of the goats.
Zero30202025-12-27 15:29
My guilty pleasure, I will keep watching even if the quality of anything past season 1 has been dubious at best.
ZeroZion2025-12-27 15:55
LFG!!!
solidpeyo2025-12-27 16:45
If this anime good? I stopped at episode 2 and never went back. I don't know I got bored
rainbowplasmacannon2025-12-27 17:06
I very much enjoyed the first season. Not sure if it’s because little was airing at the time or not though as I haven’t gone back to it. Season 2 got dropped after like 3 episodes though
apathydelta2025-12-27 17:24
The only good thing to actually come out of this show is the PSI mod by Vazkii.
Disastrous_Act98872025-12-27 17:26
You're so right but very few people understand lmao
0cchan2025-12-27 17:43
I really liked this initially but later came to know that the main love interest had a connotation of incest which was really off-putting.
Edit: So weird getting downvoted for not liking incest.
AutMcD2025-12-27 19:29
I read the novel a few years back. Still one of the best volumes imo. The whole reveal of siblings identities is just so peak.
My next favourite part would be the isolation arc. That one is peak.
lounittachang2025-12-27 22:57
Finally! Love this show. Tatsuya is by far one of my favorite MC.
Grace_Omega2025-12-27 23:12
I haven't read up on this since the first season ended, does his sister still want to fuck him?
tudipanda2025-12-28 04:44
Such a good show. Looking forward to it.
seriousbusines2025-12-28 05:10

Xynker2025-12-28 06:17
I just call it magical incest the anime
Aengeil2025-12-28 08:33
been watching the anime, but why i keep seeing them fighting weakling the whole anime.
Constant_Car_11532026-01-01 21:47
I feel like theres going to be some big bombs dropped in this movie. Its about time things got serious. Yuki and Tatsuya are going to face the challenges of Alabama and finally elope, hopefully. Risks be dammed those two wouldnt be the same without one another you all know it.
