Orange had a depressed character. I think it depicted it very well, it actually sent me into a depressive episode.

This Monster Wants To Eat Me
Probably not very relatable since it has a lot of fantasy elements, but it's pretty good and it deals with those topics.

'Recovery of an mmo junkie' always makes me feel a bit better. Though I think the main character is closer to burn out than depression.
She quits her job after it becomes too much, and the show is a mix of her virtual life in an online game, and her real life.

I can't recommend you watch this unless you are feeling quite self assured. It's pretty brutal.

inb4, anyone recommend Babylon, one of the main focal point of the story is about suicide, but it does a really dogshit depiction of it and will not recommend you watch it. the story went out of it ways to give justifications for why it's good but is very dishonest with the answers as to why it is wrong.
as for the story I would recommend, I haven't seen many anime about the issue, but Monster explores ideas about nihilism and suicide and the value of life, and it does a really good job at tackling that issue.

For depression, I highly recommend "Sangatsu no Lion." It addresses the topic very well.
And speaking of self-harm, I can't think of one right now, but "Needy Girl Overdose" is coming out soon, which basically deals with a lot of this (you could also play the video game).

Takopi, the movie silent voice.

I don't know how well or reliably it depicted it, but the first 2 seasons of "Oshi no Ko" come to mind. Thankfully, the HIDIVE stream did put one of those "If you are contemplating suicide or depression, seek help."-type messages.
RyaReisender2025-12-28 16:08
At least one arc in the first season definitely depicts something in that regard quite well.

Welcome to the NHK

One of the side characters has an arc about that in Turkey

Kizumonogatari (a movie trilogy part of the Monogatari series). There’s less depression at the forefront but the MC has struggles with his life that inform A LOT of his decisions through the series.
You could start with Bakemonogatari first, but Kizu is a prequel and works just as well.

I agree with the ones that recommend Takopi and welcome to NHK (the MAC is a hikikomori) maybe we can add SEL

If you’re willing to branch into manga try the series from Nagata Kabi. Depression, body image, alcoholism, parental conflict, career disappointment, it has it all.
