I don’t understand anime sometimes is there something wrong with me?
Just another person who’s trying to understand anime. I think the concept and imagery is ever so beautiful… however I’m trying to understand why I don’t know how to enjoy it. Clearly I’m missing something or maybe it’s just not for me? But how selfish am I being if I say I want to enjoy it. I want to see what others see when they watch anime.
Maybe suggest something I should start off with?..

Nothing wrong with you if you don’t like it lol there’s no course or lesson you need to take to enjoy anime, I just watch it…. And enjoy it lol
Try new genres, stuff. Don't stop at one bad song.
Try [Death Note](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1535).
Try watching dozens of different anime until you find one catered to what you like.
It's a medium, just like books, plays, radio dramas, or TV shows. Anime isn't a genre.
What elements do you find the most appealing in stories? Do you value action above all else? Character development? Relationships?
But being serious you may just not like the popular ones and there's probably something you like, you could try find something similar to an american show you liked. But you don't have to
I mean it's like youtube or tiktok if you don't like mrbeast videos doesn't mean you don't like youtube and there's probably a channel out there you'll enjoy but you don't have to keep searching for a channel you like if you think the youtube videos you've seen are boring and generic
* Different language
* Depictions of foreign culture and society
* Very characteristic art styles and designs
* Foreign comedy, tropes, and references
* Aggressive sexualization and fan service
* Exaggerated displays of emotion
* High pitched voices
These are just the main aspects I can think of, but there will be many others, and they vary widely depending on the genre of anime you're watching. One of the reasons I like **Seinen** anime, for example is the mature approach to the medium, resulting in it being the most comparable to western media.
Shows like Psycho Pass, 91 days, Orb on the movements of the earth, and Vinland Saga could be worth checking out if any of this resonates with you.
Don’t watch more than 2-3 episodes of anything you don’t like. Value your time. The more new shows you expose yourself to, the more familiar you become with the contours of the medium. I’d advise staying away from anything with more than ~60 episodes for this reason. Right now, you should be exploring to better discover your tastes while you familiarize yourself with the medium. That means watching short shows and dropping things on a dime.
