"Do you think we have time to draw anything new!? Just reverse the Saitama and Garou image, that'll be enough!"
Winning the lottery means no outside investors, it means no rushed timelines due to people wanting an return on investment ASAP. And hiring staff, and work space, costs money. And sitting on episodes that are done and ready to go, also costs money (opportunity cost).
So yeah, the comment you're replying to makes sense. I hate this "it's not budget" argument so god damn much. Yes, it's not "shovel money into anime machine = good anime". But time IS money for professionals, so in order to get more time, we need more money. In order to hire big name animators ON TOP OF our standard animators for crazy sakuga moments, we need more money. Them offering to work for free just because they absolutely LOVE an anime property should not be built into the calculation, people ought to be compensated for their work.
It's the equivalent of saying "You know, money doesn't equal happiness." But when you're dirt poor or are in massive debt, having SOME money would absolutely mean happiness. And there are actual studies that show there is a level of money where every additional dollar doesn't actually make you happier... but any dollar under it absolutely does. And it's usually around the level of "I'm so wealthy a parking ticket doesn't bother me." So the saying is just untrue. But these kinds of things are said by people who are trying to seem smarter than they actually are.
No. There is no ROI in anime (generally). It's because anime is just an ad. In this case it was supposed to be an ad for OPM gacha game. And that means it needs to come out by specific point. Chances are, it took them less time to pump out a gacha game than it takes to schedule any decent anime studio in advance.
> But time IS money for professionals, so in order to get more time, we need more money.
You could reframe it like that but then you go ahead an invalidate your point by reducing it to "more money better animation" stuff
>In order to hire big name animators ON TOP OF our standard animators for crazy sakuga moments, we need more money.
There are some "big name" animators working on OPM (not the biggest, but still), and there are sakuga moments. There are probably more fantastic sakuga moments in this season of OPM than your average seasonal anime that is much more well received. They just fall flat, because overall production is in the shitter due to time constraints. At best, you get to S2 level (remember the number of animators in credits for each episode...).
Recall the infamous mahoraga JJK episode that while having many beautiful cuts was a complete mess because a considerable chunk of the episode wasn't finished in time so the flow just didn't make sense (notably, it also had a strict deadline imposed and the fact that both jjk s2 and opm s3 barely managed to finish before the year end is no coincidence).
Also, most talent is already booked and committed to a project. When you need to make an anime, and make it RIGHT NOW due to poor planning/management decisions (well, maybe not so poor, if it still works), they won't be able to contribute even if they want to (even ignoring the fact how feasible it'd be in the given timeframe), no matter the cost (unless we start approaching it from unlimited budget perspective). At the end of the day, countless of anime gets produced with the same budget or lower as OPM (even ignoring the exception that was S1) that is nowhere near as close to such disaster.
>It's the equivalent of saying "You know, money doesn't equal happiness."
No, it's not. What you are trying to push is equivalent of "two women will produce a baby twice as fast", however.
If you still don't believe me, here is the opinion of someone [really prominent in the industry](https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePunchMan/comments/1pulxsn/animator_evakoi_jjk_s2_bleach_tybw_vinland_saga/).
What do you think about the fact that there is part 2 scheduled? This is not really needed for an anime as an ad for a game. In particular if you know that you have to rush some things.
Because they wanted to animate the whole arc (the current "part" ended in a very awkward spot), but couldn't do it in one go for obvious reasons (they barely managed to do part 1). It's not uncommon (DanDanDan was split as well for similar reasons).
Also, another point re:budget vs time - remember that in 99% of cases animators are not part of the regular staff and are paid basically per drawing. And unless you are a literal superstar, the variance in pay is small. So taking, say, twice as long to produce a season wouldn't meaningfully increase the spending (although it would be an opportunity cost for the studio if they wanted to free up hands to do something else, e.g. see how JJK S2 suffered due to MAPPA prioritizing CSM which was also negatively affected) but would considerably increase the quality of animation and everything else. Rush job is a rush job, even if you'd get paid extra to do it.
And thanks for the additional information.
This was done on a short timeline and a crap budget because Bandai Namco don't give a shit. They know its a popular IP and will do 90% of the same numbers if its total powerpoint slop as if it was a masterpiece that they spent billions animating.
Big anime studios in general likely see the writing on the wall that AI generated animation is going to replace 90% of the workers in the next 5-10 years, so you're going to see a lot of these big IPs and high-visibility projects getting absolutely phoned in until AI gets to a point they can fire everyone.
An action manga with so many detailed designs especially on the kaijins is going to be even more demanding
Not all productions are born the same
Also calling up Paul McCartney on getting that Beatles anime in my head I always wanted done.
He calls himself an anime fan and could drop 50m to adapt the whole thing at top level and it wouldn't be shit to him, but he doesn't. If I could give $2 and have OPM be goated I'd do it without thinking. I'd give 4 and say do it extra nice.
If only they could have kept the entire season on this level.
I'd assume they wanted Ep 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 to be the "priority" episodes of the season. That's why you can see small snippets of good/decent animation in those eps. Even the staff list for those eps was pretty solid. It's just that pretty much all of them were compromised due to the horrendous schedule.
I don't know whether to laugh or to cry...
[](#laughter)
It is as if I've seen this image for Part 1...
Looks it up on reddit: [https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoBestFriendsPlay/comments/wr8kbt/one\_punch\_man\_season\_3\_visual\_key/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoBestFriendsPlay/comments/wr8kbt/one_punch_man_season_3_visual_key/)
It looks like they just reused the same background, added a red glow effect, and switched the positions of both Saitama and Garou at the end.
I think they could have at least have a different key visual?
The monsters really thought they could eat Pig God, but whenever Pig God sees something monstrous in front of him, all he sees is a prey where he's the predator who can dine on some delicious monster meat! A lot of that going around this past season!
Superalloy Blackluster vs Insect God! The absolute in insect armor and physiology versus the pinnacle of human muscle! Insect God picked the wrong human to mess with because Blackluster is in the Top 3 strongest humans...and he makes it clear by tanking Insect God's hits and tearing him apart in one hit! Saitama would approve.
Speaking of Saitama...finally! He's doing stuff, even if it's just one-punching monsters while trying to get directions. He even successfully disciplines Pochi! With a punch so strong it sends reverberations across the underground lair that EVERYONE feels, though only Genos (who I don't think we've seen in like 6-7 episodes) can recognize as his master at work.
Tatsumaki vs Gyoro-Gyoro! The battle of psychic dominance! Gyoro-Gyoro throws everything he has at Tatsumaki, but for her it's nothing more than a little light workout and a convenient massage before she twists and tears Gyoro-Gyoro apart with all her smug gremlin superiority and psychic power. Tatsumaki may have a high opinion of herself, but it's one that's absolutely valid.
Gyoro-Gyoro is not above calling for help, especially since Orochi himself was trained to follow his every command...though too bad Orochi just happened to run into Saitama. Orochi can tell that Saitama is a legit threat, possibly the BIGGEST threat to all Monsters, and knows he has to deal with him in his most absolute form.
Orochi is a living God foretold by Prophecy, the Ultimate existence, the most powerful...yeah, Saitama's heard it all before. This is really just an average day in the week with him and yet another monster who talks a big game but will go down in one punch, yet another being that sought strength but lost sight of the meaning of it in the process. Which means that no matter what they throw at him, they can't stop Saitama before he destroys them as One Punch Man!
King's reputation does him in again as the Blizzard Bunch leave him alone. Though it turns out the King Engine CAN defeat a monster by terrifying a shapeshifter into defeating himself. Still not going to make King feel any better.
Oh hey, Garou! Almost forgot about you.
Again, doesn’t make up for the rest of the season, but if Part 2 has more Saitama I’d probably still watch it. His reaction to things are just hilarious
We needed more of that.
i dont even care about slideshow animations i just don't want to get bored watching this. and i was halfasleep this whole season.
[I also love how Saitama interrupts Orochi's monologue.](https://i.imgur.com/4OXpFeQ.jpeg) He's heard it all before and in the end he knows all of them will go down after a single punch. Not gonna lie, [I kinda feel bad for Saitama there in the end.](https://i.imgur.com/yOAF6S1.jpeg)
Saitama's disappointment at the end practically mirroring the fans' opinions after watching this season lol.
You couldn't have said this better, and I'm saying this as a big OPM fan.
I find it strange that Gyoro-Gyoro with all his eyesight still underestimate Tatsumaki even though she has used her power in public many times before (unlike Saitama), and it's not just a small margin either she barely seems like she broke a sweat fighting him.
King Engine >>> Serious punch?
There were some glimpses of actual quality animation here and there, but yeah...
I guess with that both Orochi and gyoro gyoro are gone and probably the monster association with them?
I see a cour 2 has been confirmed for this season, hopefully whatever happened that caused this trainwreck can be fixed up before then. if it could at least have season 2 quality...
The worst thing for me this season was definitely the direction.
I've seen a lot of horrible animation, so this season is still acceptable for me. However, the sound editing is personally much more distracting than that.
So the problem goes far beyond "bad animation".
Feel like one took what was appealing for it and split the much stronger stories into mob for the single (mainly) focus. And while it’s still probably too early to say, his other work Versus has a better overall full cast of characters to care about without a saitama issue. Although imo it lacks some highs for the main cast like a king or tatsumaki and the enemies have a bit/lot more appeal.
Re utilizing Saitama's gang plus a few S heroes makes way more sense. Then you can present the new heroes from a known place (interactions with characters we already know) and leave space for the monsters' presentation.
>Although imo it lacks some highs for the main cast like a king or tatsumaki and the enemies have a bit/lot more appeal.
Well the main focus of Versus is the fights and interactions between NEs, but I agree the Humans need to shine more, but chapter 30 is starting to give us that.
He even cut Orochi off when he was doing his big villain intro monologue with basically a “yada yada i don’t give a shit” lol.
I guess that’s it then? To say this season was rough would be an understatement. Idk if they’re gonna continue with this same level of production. I honestly wouldn’t mind another season, but if this is the quality we’re getting I’m more than happy letting this die and going back to reading the manga. I gotta catch up anyway.
See you all in 2027, maybe things will be better.
What the hell was that punch !?
Couldn't see that at all.
Let's hope that Bandai Namco never takes this project ever again. Would have been brilliant if it was completely in the hands of J.C staff.
This is the first time I gave an anime rating of 1/10 on MAL.
Time will tell if things improve.
ps: oh, and don't even let me start with the weak-ass lame-ass kaijin grunts, not a single one of them worth a damn. I've seen more fearful weekly monsters in a Kamen Rider show.
I wish I could have been more satisfied by Orochi vs Saitama, though I liked that Saitama could understand that Orochi was bored from being so strong.
Tatsumaki completely overwhelming Gyoro-Gyoro was amusing.
This getting a sequel cour next year is a surprise after the response and reactions I've seen throughout this season, I don't know how well received this was in Japan but I guess they may be making some kind of profit. I do hope if they don't work on the animation, that writing gets some work, I didn't find this season that interesting or funny to watch.
Neon frames.
Just 1 minute or so of somewhat good animation.
The finale.
I hope the next part actually gets love and time it deserves.
like, it was laid out in season one that Saitama found great dissatisfaction with is ability to one punch everything, that a life of struggle and overcoming difficult challenges is more satisfying than a life of absolute power
it feels ironic because it certainly wasn't on purpose that season one had better direction and was way more popular, but it feels fitting in a way that the show just keeps trundling along despite not having the same spark of excitement, sort of mirroring Saitama's journey
This was at least a show to fill up Sundays...
There is definitely a direction issue when the jokes don't even evoke a smirk of amusement, but rather come across as completely boring chatter across the entire season. I don't know if the story is presented better in the manga, but as it was presented via the anime, it became extremely clear that it was supposed to have only been a simple backdrop to allow for awesome-looking fights... which did not exist. At best, they were above- average-looking.
The character designs also annoyed me because without developing much depth for the other heroes, they came across as random designs that seemed cool and were then shoe-horned in to fill random holes. I think King was the only one to get an interesting setup, but he's just an ordinary-looking dude.
Anyway, I will likely watch the next season if there's not much else airing on the same release day.
The final punch was alright, Saitama and Pochis moment gave me a laugh. But still, this season was handled so poorly it saddens me.
I just wish we could go back in time and keep Natsume on OPM or give it to a studio who would better handle the anime.
Part 2 is supposedly set to drop in the summer of 2027, so here we go....
I have no idea how long it will be before season 4 but surely it can't be worse than season 3's animation.
Slideshow presentations, the neon character frames or the sheer lack of effort.
I'm hopeful this season will be reanimated by someone who cares about one punch man.
Lmao at King gaining a solo kill without Saitama though
I know, I know, don't put too much stock into an aggregated score, but it still shocks me to see it in the bottom 25 of all ranked TV anime. Again, it's not _good_ by any measure, but I've seen WAY worse.
Like showing pig god eating monsters and then suddenly the next scene we're looking at a monster who was eating and it was actually pig god inside him and ig the prev scene was a flashback
Or Saitama getting lasered by the dog and then it shows the dog firing the laser and then saitama talks in the next scene with the laser already done
Why were the Flashy Flash scenes better animated than this part
