A hobby project: a “Spotify-like” website for anime music
Hi everyone,
I’m a programmer in my free time and a big anime fan.
For several years I’ve been posting drum covers of anime music on social media (mainly openings and endings), and I’ve always had the same issue: finding the songs and keeping them well organized. I know there are other websites and even Spotify playlists, but I’ve never really liked how the information is structured or how you navigate through them.
So a few months ago I decided to build my own application — something like a “Spotify” focused exclusively on anime music. It’s still in development: I’m continuously expanding and refining the dataset, as well as improving and adding new features.
I’d really appreciate any feedback, criticism, or feature ideas you think could be useful for a project like this.
Just to be clear: this is a hobby project and there’s no monetization involved.
Thanks for reading 🙂

btw the tag for seeing which OP # a song is, that's great
There are a lot of things you can filter by, and I don’t want to end up with a gigantic sidebar menu :')
* Lyrics for songs (preferably in both Japanese and English)
* OSTs
* some sort of customisable queue or playlist feature
Also I think it would be great if there was some way for users to contribute. A way for users to submit suggestions for the songs/anime they liked to be added. That would help the library grow much larger.
Bonus suggestion: I'm not sure how hard such a feature would be to implement, but if there were user submitted playlists, like "Best openings of 2010s", that would be pretty cool.
Anyways, great website.
I actually looked into adding lyrics at the beginning (in fact, on desktop the space below the video in the side player was originally meant for that), but after researching it a bit I realized it could cause copyright issues, since lyrics are protected content.
On the other hand, the playlist idea and user participation sound great. That was actually one of my main pain points when creating the site — I wanted to have my own personal anime music playlist to play along with — so it’s already on the roadmap. The main challenge is that once you go into user contributions and playlists, you also have to deal with accounts, logins, and user management, which adds quite a bit of complexity.
Still, I really like those ideas and they’re definitely something I want to build towards. Thanks again for taking the time to share them!
For user participation, how about a sort of anonymous submission feature. You won't have to deal with accounts because there are none, just a submission feature that allows users to submit songs to the admin which can then be manually added. Something like the comment box feature on a lot of old personal websites that didn't require a login.
For the copyright issue with lyrics, I wonder if you can use Lrclib API to display lyrics on the go instead of storing them in the website. Though I'm not sure if that solves the copyright issue or not.
Looks nice though, will be better once it has more content. I love anime music but right now there's nothing on there I'd stream haha.
