Two reasons:

1. It ensures that everyone's voting on the same pile of shows (even if most people can't meaningfully have an opinion about everything).

2. From experience, a poll where I give people 50+ titles and ask a multiple choice question gets far more feedback than something where I ask people to give me a list of anime.

Pretty much think of ecchi as sex and nudity in movies and shows, whereas hentai is porn. Most ecchi spend far more of their runtime on plot than sex scenes and don't show sex as explicitly as hentai. But same as anything else, there's always shows that tip toe that line.

It’s been awhile since I saw Love Hina but I agree with Food Wars being over Domestic Girlfriend. Yes Food Wars lacks sex but I think it makes up for it (especially in like the first 2 seasons) with the sheer quantity of nudity. I would also argue it’s much more of an ecchi thematically.

Domestic Girlfriend feels more like a soap opera with sex. Outside of the sex I don’t think the quantity of nudity was high. Plus nudity doesn’t inherently equal ecchi…But it’s been a few years so I maybe forgetting stuff and thinking too much of the non-animated chapters as well.

Domestic Girlfriend has some sex, but it is fundamentally a romance series and not a fanservice series. Also, one of the two sex scenes in the anime adaptation is expliticly about how awkward and uncomfortable it is for both of them. So sexy it isn't. I found this list strange myself, but this comment... is rather disingenuous.

Firstly, it's not that high on the list - it's near the middle. Not only that, but complaining that MT got more "5 votes" than Monogatari when the difference is literally ***two points*** seems... rather nitpicky.

Second, sorry, but MT goes beyond just realistically depicting sex in the story. Many times, it deliberately shows us sexual scenes in an explicit manner. Not to mention how much of a pervert Rudy is, which to some extent dictates how the story is told. So obviously, many people would call it an ecchi anime, since the definition is not limited to just having a fanservice.

I have a theory that there might be some selection bias happening here.

The number of people who have gotten deep enough "down the rabbit hole" that they watched past bakemonogatari are probably more likely to have higher thresholds for what counts as ecchi.

So anyone who stopped during bakemonogatari would rate it lower than if they had watched nisemonogatari and beyond, but anyone who had watched nise- is significantly more likely to rate it lower because they've also more likely to have watched gushing over magical girls, or nukitashi or interspecies reviewers and are using that as their "is ecchi" threshold.

Like the poll really shows, a lot of it will really just come down to what people think of as ecchi. I didnt think any of the feet or armpit shots in *Frieren* as sexual, let alone the mimics, until well after when I ran into weirdos on Reddit. Frieren having her clothes melted, one gag for Fern and Stark each, and Ubel's "death by snu-snu" eyes were basically the only parts I thought of as even a little sexualized.

I think a lot of people considered "playing it straight" vs "part of a joke", and gave more weight to the former. The bath scene, while ecchi, was part of a punchline set earlier in the episode. Most of the other anime above it used the same sort of scenes purely as fan service.

A lot of complainers but the results look like they came out pretty reasonable. Shows at the top are constant ecchi sequences, shows at the middle are less frequent or less risque, and shows at the bottom seem to be correctly identified as not ecchi.

Frieren vote ended basically 7 to 1700. anyone with experience in polling will know that, no matter what, a few individuals will give extreme outlier answers. They mis-click, they misunderstand the question, and so on...
