Most anime protagonists would be terrifying if the story wasn’t from their POV
Think about it for a second.
A character who keeps getting stronger at an absurd rate.
Survives things no normal human should.
Leaves destruction everywhere they go.
And everyone around them either follows them… or disappears
If the story was told from the villain’s perspective, a lot of anime protagonists would feel like horror characters.
Which MC do you think would be the scariest if the anime wasn’t from their point of view??

Damn they eat anything.
Every casual touch is a chance for unpredictable disaster.
Lupusregina, Cocytus and Sebas are, by the world's measure, monstrous beings that could end humanity and everything else if they wished. Within the ecosystem of Nazarick, in terms of raw power, they're *expendable.* And the series lets you know.
Specifically on the surviving noble ladies after the great war on the Katze Plains essentially killed all the noble men of the kingdom, and how they inheret the lands and titles (how they deal with it all and especially the integration of Nazarik's policies about undead labour etc.)
It fleshes out the time period after the war at the Katze Plains and the Kingdom Movie (then goes on after the kingdom movie into the new season of anime)
After the current arc, however, it will veer off of the official canon, as the author fundamentally does not agree with the story that the original Overlord author has decided to tell to get a quick wrap-up.
So the current arc is the last "fully canon" one, so to speak.
Even from the pov of a trained assassin, Luffy in Gear 5 looked like a demon
Nothing is more scary to people than the unknown and Subaru lives in a world most other people can never comprehend. God damn I love Re Zero.
That would be incredibly upsetting.
>We start talking shit about the half-elf as per usual
>Some random simp nobody's ever seen before gets in front of the crowd and starts giving some cringe speech about how he's her knight and we're all cowards
>Gets his ass beat by actual knight whose name I can't remember for some reason
>Fast forward a couple months
>Random simp from before somehow got two other royal candidates on his side and led assault to kill the White Whale and Archbishop of Sloth
>Couple weeks later, he's fucking killed the Great Rabbit too and has contracted with a great spirit
>Gets made into an actual fucking knight, half-elf girl literally wants to have his babies
>Saves water city fighting like 3 archbishops at once, sword saint praises him nonstop
>mfw Natsuki Subaru did nothing wrong (in my timeline)
Return by Death is really just perfect for this kind of concept, it takes a character who normally has pretty average/slightly above average intelligence, but often makes him seem unbelievably smart or weird in how he somehow knows a large amount of info he really shouldn't have. The dichotomy between a largely impulsive and sometimes rash individual, having these random moments of incredible strategic intellect, would be very worrying for anyone else.
Seeing how all of the characters try to rationalize Return by Death without actually knowing about it, and how some see it as positive or negative, is one of the best aspects of the series.
Might have to pick it back up.
No, he's still 17-18 in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc (the cast are still in high school during it).
His father [Bleach]>!was the 10th Division Captain and the Shiba family is ex-nobility from back when there were 5 noble families instead of 4!<. His mother [Bleach]>!wasn't an ordinary human either, but a pure-blooded Quincy!<.
At minimum Toshiro Hitsugaya knew who Ichigo's father was, having [Bleach]>!served under the man directly!<, I think there was an author's explanation that he just kept his mouth shut about it and didn't pry, to avoid bringing trouble onto the man.
The audience knows better but in their world, hes seen as a villain
It's so prevalent that people literally get Stampede insurances. It's like an accounted force of nature.
What matters most in this world and another is whether or not insurance will cover something. Its so on point I love it.
I doubt too many Slice of Life protagonists would be very intimidating...
Prepare to get a bunch of smart ass comments from people cherry-picking the exceptions while missing your point
Now, it isn't perfectly analogous to anime, but many anime protagonists would be even more terrifying. Especially ones where the MC is trying to fight a government/respected institution that is corrupt and evil, but the commoners don't know its bad.
It doesn't do this in the source material because it doesn't need to while also doing its own very unique POV tricks, but it goes to show how a proper adaptation is a skill and not a slavish one-to-one with the source.
Of course, it doesn't happen all the time, but they're welcomed and more must be done, especially for the likes of Kira Yamato, Garrod Ran and Suletta Mercury.
Monsters versus monsters versus monsters. And the requirement of a hero to become a monster themselves to fight them, is a bizarre weight to carry; but the average people will piss their pants and run lol
And then they go to ground for 2 years.
...and then they come back, and everything, somebody must be putting their foot on the goddam accelerator because things start to escalate fast.
Tatsuya is practically a one man army capable obliterating anything (and his friends are quite competent too)
In the anime it's not as pronounced, but in the light novels, about 40% of the entire text is devoted to reactions to Haruka's actions from the perspective of different characters.
Lead character in Nausicaa, especially the manga? Always terrifying if you weren't her friend or subordinate; her improvement over time is comparatively mild.
One Piece? Yeah this is fair.
Maison Ikkoku? Nah. Congrats, you grew a spine, became a better person, and have become a school teacher. You'd probably not be any more or less capable of kicking the ass of the person you were five (in-setting) years prior at the start of the show.
Captain Harlock? I think he never grows in power, I think he's just absurdly OP to start with.
Kaneda from Akira? You know what, that's a work where we actually get to see this from the point of view of a rando. And it is played for horror, because Tetsuo DOES grow in power like this, and IS terrifying. Whereas Kaneda is still a punk who gets seasick and rides a badass bike.
Warp, from Kaiba? Eh. Clearly there was a lot going on even at the start of the show. He simply didn't know what he was, and arguably that too is played for horror, at least from the perspective of anybody in Issoudan (the setting's significant terrorist organization, and which half the protagonists are part of). In fact, Warp if anything loses capability for most of the (short) series, and we see what he should be capable of constantly in the hands of others.
Planetes? Congrats, you're now a qualified astronaut with some fresh traumas and a little moderation in your obsessive wish to contribute to the world but no less of a hothead. There's still better pilots, better EVA specialists, and the world is still too big to change alone, but life goes on and you can make a difference in a small way.
Girls' Last Tour? ... They die. That's the ending.
What you're describing is a very small subset of anime.
It has two protagonists, though I'd say it's Natsu's story being told by Lucy. Natsu Dragnel is terrifying and Lucy is scared of him. She gets over it when she needs to, but that fear is real and valid.
I've only seen the anime, and at this point it's surprising that he hasn't seriously injured or worse someone in the guild.
Every heavy hitter in the worlds most infamous guild would give their lives in a heartbeat for Lucy and if you somehow made it past them, you have to face someone with the most broken kit in the series
That episode alone makes the show worth checking out, and the rest is pretty decent.
Emperor Straw Hat Luffy is a maniac ,a battle crazy tactician leader of a fleet of over 5 thousand pirates with 7 captains.
The main crew of 9 seniors include a master swordsman, a mutated prince, a woman controlling the weather, a self proclaimed god- cult leader, a former Warlord Fishman, a giant robot, an undead, a shapeshifter racoon dog (mascot) and a wanted criminal woman leading figure in taboo history research.
Base Madoka can fire arrows faster than bullets and Mami is a literal bulletstorm.
Hibiki will sing the most upbeat jpop at you as she beats you to death.
Re:Creators was not an exaggeration. It is a fact that magical girls are adorable little nukes
She kind of deserves half of them, though. She is indeed greedy, mean-spirited, short-temperated and cares way too little about collateral damage, blowing up an entire village on the first episode.
The worst part is, the success of his main goal will result in the end your species and there is nothing you can do to get rid of him.
Kazuma's party (funny but true)
Danmachi is also cool because it has Sword Oratoria happening in parallel and shows Loki Familia's perspective as they witness Bell's rise. Even though he feels like he's so far behind Ais in power, we see that she's actually wondering how the hell this kid is improving so fast, even faster than she did. And his fight against the minotaur at lvl 1 is like this massively inspiring feat that lights a fire in all the veterans to go push their limits and take on the strongest enemies they can find in the unknown depths of the dungeon they're journeying to.
Zushi is a 1 in 100,000 talent. He is incredibly strong, talented and young. He befriends Killua and Gon, who are... A 1 in 10 Million Talent.
Zushi is outshined, overpowered and left behind in a few episodes because The Main characters Gon and Killua are just that... *MAIN CHARACTERS* There are 80,000 Zushi in a normal world, but there are only 800 Gon and Killua in the same world. The difference in quality is Humbling haha.
