Give me your anime hot takes that you actually stand by and defend the hotter the better.
Ok let me have some actual anime hot takes that you stand by full and not some generic Frieren better than Solo Leveling lol but if you want to say Solo Leveling better than Frieren and actually defend it thats what I am talking about.
I know these threads pop in from time to time but I need some current ones and some comments for a video I am working on if thats okay more details at the bottom.
Here are mine:
* Romance/sol are just as generic as Isekai/power fantasy but doesnt get as much hate. Ofc I am not talking about the exceptions or extremes where every genere has its best/worst series just talking in general. But there is a big double standard where isekai gets a lot more hate in some places while romance/sol gets praised.
* One Punch Man is more carried by its S1 animation than Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer story while very simple I find better than One Punch Man regardless of animation quality.
* JJK is a lot more carried by animation than anything else.
* AoT/Mha had good endings while not perfect they were still good. - Evangelion is the most overrated anime and some fans are like cultists.
* Fairy Tail is awesome its a story about power of friendship but people complain about power of friendship in a power of friendship show ??? Its like biting into an apple and complaining its not a banna, Dont get me wrong it has its issues also. This goes into talking about expectations and going into a show with wrong expectations like going into Solo Leveling and expecting Vinland Saga.
* Naruto is the worst of the BIG 3 by far.
* 5/10 is Mid not 7/10
* Not every anime needs to be a 10/10 masterpiece sometimes a mid/generic show is great.
* Dragon Ball Daima while it had great animation was super boring.
* Spy x Family is fun but the plot has the progression of a snail with alzheimer.
* Great animation is not the end all be all in an anime while its very important and in a perfect world you get the entire package of great animation/story/chars/execution the others are more important than great animation.
* High school DxD has a great actual plot/world/characters and its not just boobs and fanservice.
* Just because you dont like an anime/genre doesnt mean its bad objectively (sometimes things are and criticism is fine but i am not talking about that) A show can simply not be for you which is more than fine but a lot of people conflate that with something being bad.
I have more probably lol but these should be enough and maybe some arent even hot takes ?
Also let me know some thoughts about mine.
But give me some of yours and try not to use the downvote button for people comenting as a disagree button in fact upvote hot takes you disagree with even more thats what makes it a hot take.
Also I am planning on using the most upvoted/interesting ones in a video going over them and I would like for you guys to let me know in your comment if that is okay or not.
If it's not okay I will respect that and not use it/talk about it.
I hope we get a lot of comments so there is something to make a video out of it lol.
I will try to cover as many as I can depending how the thread goes and will post the video in an edit after its done.
Also you do not have to like/subscribe or watch the video or do anything of the sort.
And I will keep it civil and fun without toxicity and things like that and I ask the same for the comments here.
I am curious with which hot take I will agree or find the ones I agree the least with.
Thank you and cant wait to read.

Very nice of you to ask to farm us for content.
Also my channel is not monetized so I dont make any money or anything out of this.
I said that line because it would be better if there are a lot of comments to have but if there wont be thats fine also.
Thank you.
Manga is not enjoyable imo
I like OPM's story and characters a lot, i just like the system of heros and villians based on classes.
I feel like this expectation is largely imposed by viewers/fans rather than the work itself and leads to false expectations. I think this is largely due to a lot of people use terms like "realistic" (and also "relatable" but that's another topic) as a stand-in for "good character writing" in media discourse.
...Even though that is far from the only viable approach to making compelling characters.
The characters of Fragrant Flower in my mind are written "well enough" because they're coherent, or put another way, [*believable* in the setting in which they are placed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verisimilitude_(fiction)). They might not exist exactly in real life but the show convinces me that aren't completely out of place in the world they specifically inhabit.
The author of Fragrant Flower has been [pretty open about aiming for an exaggeratedly gentle atmosphere](https://pocket.shonenmagazine.com/article/entry/kaoruhana_20220414), where the cast are unusually kind and emotionally open, and that tone is very much intentional.
Even ignoring authorial intent, just watching it makes me think it is not really trying to be "realistic" in a conventional sense imo. It functions closer to an iyashikei framework, even while it goes out the typical genre conventions by incorporating some drama, which explains why the characters behave the way they do.
^(personally I find the high rating surprising and didn’t find the show that interesting myself. I just think the "unrealistic" critique is a byproduct of fans using the word so loosely. It feels like it’s being judged for failing at a goal it never actually had.)
I enjoyed the show i guess, but that was after i was convinced to watch it after i quit on the first ep.
I‘ve seen this take floating around a couple times, and imo this says more about one‘s social surroundings than the show‘s writing, if you consider having characters be simply polite and friendly with each other to be „too fairytale“ and „weird“ instead of just normal.
At least you acknowledge it as a hot take.
But i feel like i get to enjoy anime more when compared to people who know the source material since i'm always anime only.
I often see source readers being let-down by anime adaptions since it doesn't match the source material the way they would hope while i on the other hand can just enjoy it without comparing it to the source material.
It definitely took away from the movie at the time.
And also this anime-first mentality led me to the first hand example of how the Nasuverse VN-only fanbase are an insufferable bunch to deal with. Looking at the "Tsukihime anime doesn't exist" meme here.
In addition, DxD has one of the OST in anime history, every opening and ending is awesome
Sometimes you feel like a fast food cheeseburger, sometimes you feel like Wagyu steak with truffle sauce.
* The Toriyama stuff did a lot for anime, but it isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread. Neither are any of the Big 3 or Neon Genesis.
* Not everything in every genre needs a romantic ship. We have genres for that. Let things be what they are
* OP make power fantasies like Solo Leveling aren’t very good or inspired. They appeal strongly to their target audience, but they’re not great.
* It is okay if you don’t like certain genres and disliking something after one episode is valid. There are way too many titles to waste time on things you don’t think you’ll like.
* Yes, One Piece pacing sucks and it’s dated. But given the records it has achieved, and the accolades it has received, it is an objectively good show to a broad audience. Still has its problems.
* Every genre in every media follows tropes - that’s normal. Genres have tropes. It’s not that deep.
You don’t have my permission to use my comment in part or in whole in your videos at any point.
I'm tempted to use a more scalding hot example, but let's go with Wonder Egg Priority. The initial episodes gained a lot of traction and acclaim. It was compared to Ikuhara's works like Penguindrum, but it had much higher rating than it. Personally, I thought its writing isn't remotely close to Penguindrum's craftmanship. I didn't really feel surprised when it turned out it shat itself before the finish line.
Alderamin on the Sky is shit
The World is Still Beautiful is shit
Hyouka is not that good
Planetes is the biggest waste of potential I've ever witnessed and the I detest who the MC becomes during the last arc of the show
Attack on Titan peaked in Season 1-3. As it goes on it just turns into some "I'm 14 and this is deep" shit
Romantic Killer is not that good
Aho Girl is criminally underrated
Seton Academy is criminally underrated
Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two Hit Multi Target Attacks is misunderstood and criminally underrated
Kiss x Sis (OVA version) is the best ecchi show ever made
No Guns Life is underrated
Yukino from Oregairu bores me to death as a character. Yui blows her out of the water in every way possible
Girlfriend x Girlfriend is misunderstood and criminally underrated
If you think Light Yagami is anything other than a psycho piece of shit please seek help
Watching demon slayer is like watching Dora the explorer as an adult. You just want to bash your head on with a hammer because of how much it treats the audience as someone who is stupid. Constantly explaining and telling you what to think. Trying to force a long ass flashback to try to garner synpthay for the villain is cheap writing.
Manga is an inferior medium of story telling. While it can be used as an avenue of story telling, the way manga is serialized is not to the benefit of story telling. Telling a story in small pieces over the course of many years isnt practical plus deadlines and audience interferences (such as polls and letters). It also encourages mangakas to run a story for a longer period of time for more money. It's simply a low risk and a easy to break into Industry.
One punch man doesn't have great art. Yusuke is great at drawing, but it's more like a pinnacle of drawing than developing their own style. But even then the manga doesn't look good all the time. Just look at chapter 200, so many boring looking panels that have no backgrounds and a generic art style.
I skip every time someone is explaining their ability in JJK.
Anime in general is driven way to much by what's currently popular and cliches and tropes. Unlike with films where a director can stand out and pursue their own vision. Anine all around is focused on the money so while some anime cam be seen as weird on the outside, it was still created cause there is an audience that is willing to shell out money.
Not sure if it’s a hot take but: The Kagerou Project/Mekakucity Actors community is still alive and will get a season 2
Also Hyouka will also get a season 2
P.S. im just a big fan of both
2. Not all fillers are bad - I am a big time defender of fillers. The only time I don't really like filler arc is when they interject it in the middle of an ongoing arc, that have basically no relations to what's going on in that arc. For example, Bleach. A lot of people seem to hate the fillers in Dragon Ball or Naruto, but I actually enjoyed them. One Piece have some of the greatest fillers too. Fillers give series some very much needed character interactions that do not exist in the manga.
3. No such thing as so bad it's good - I am not a believer in that you can enjoy something that is "bad". If you enjoy an anime then the series is doing something right for you. It is most commonly used for shows like Ghost Stories dub, or many isekai anime series. I am a fan of Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku, most people hated it, doesn't mean that I like it because "it's so bad that it's good", there are things that I really enjoyed from the show, like the exploration part that reminded me of when I play mmorpg.
4. Shoujo and Josei romance are superior to Shonen and Seinen romance - Shoujo in general deserves a lot more recognition, and I am glad that Shoujo anime are making a come back in the 2020's.
5. Ecchi / Fanservice are overrated - In the midst of the whole anime tourist discourse of late, many long time anime fans seem to think that the only people asking for lesser fanservices/ecchi in anime are only the tourists. I've been an anime fan for more than 15 years, there are some good ecchi series I enjoyed, Sekirei, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, etc. but not every normal anime needs to have ecchi in it, especially ones that are not marketed as such.
6. Chinese anime/donghua are underrated - While many of their stories are not as convoluted as anime with dozens of plot twists, the one thing that I like from them is that they know how to make their characters really cool, especially their protagonist. They also know how to make their female characters really cool without trying too hard either. I forgot when was the last time I thought an anime MC oozes cool. People hate how popular Solo Leveling is, but you can't deny that Sung Jin Woo was cool. Old school battle shonen had this, I just saw a clip of Dragon Ball where their characters were using the punching machine to measure their strength level, none of them were serious and still got numbers far surpass the numbers that average humans get, you just get that feeling of "whoa, that's cool" and I miss that.
7. Manly/crude female characters don't make them a better "female character" - I see many people seem to think that if female characters are good at throwing hands, that automatically makes them a better written female character.. or if they have a muscular body/manly mannerism that makes them a better "female character". I have Jujutsu Kaisen in mind when I say this. Jujutsu Kaisen probably have the most overrated female cast in shonen history, and many of them in my opinion are not well written. Just because they're strong or crude don't mean they're well written. This is probably a well accepted claim, but Maomao from Apothecary Diaries is example of a well written female character that still exhibit feminine traits and not physically strong. What inspired me to include this was due to a post I saw on social media where people were debating Bleach vs Jujutsu Kaisen female characters, and many people were criticizing Bleach's female characters for being inferior to Jujutsu Kaisen because some Bleach's female characters wore more revealing outfits..
More, specifically, Anime is a Japanese cultural creation, where the majority of creative process is done by ethnic/culturally raised Japanese creatives targeting primarily toward a Japanese audience. This puts it under genre more than medium.
As result, you have a bunch of people defending works that, objectively, are not that good or plainly dumb. But nobody criticises them, because oh, the heresy!
As for specifics:
– Saga of Tanya the evil. When salaryman meets Being X, he witness being X is present everywhere, knows everything and can do anything, being X goes far as manipulating time and space and salaryman body and memories. Absence of evidence isn't evidence on itself, and Being X have strong evidence suggesting he is indeed, the big boss, God. Yet salaryman refuses to admit this because... "could be anything else". That's plainly idiotic. Any logic 101 teacher could debunk that (if looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and walks like a duck... ), but hardly anyone points at the dumb premise over which the shows rests. I would bet plenty of atheists who love this one would crap their pants the moment they were to meet any entity close to what being X has shown.
– Neon genesis evangelion. Pick all names that you could find in a bible and swap them with random 3 letters. Nerv is holding the alien Dij in the basement, 18 aliens named por, yak, nub, kek and so on are trying to invade to cause the third impact. How much this change the plot and value of the work? Not much, really. But I would bet without the tip fedora flavour, the show would be hardly as popular as it is in the west.
–Gnosia. I will start by admitting I hate the character designs. I took a couple credits in painting back in school, so very likely is a freddy krueger effect at play, maybe someone somewhere can explain me how these are supposed to be good designs. Until them, however, I'll firmly believe these designs are the result of hiring someone frustrated due a failed career as circus clown. Now, that said, the biggest problem with this show is the excuse fans keep using: things are like that because that's how they are in the game. But this is not a game! Anime and videogames are different media, with their own rules and language. Because that's how it works in the game is a lame excuse, because it implies we're watching a gameplay video and expect, and furthermore, that somehow "how it works" in the game is conflicting with narrating a good story. Not long ago we had Nier: Automata and if you stretch definitions, castlevania kept the flavour of hack and slash games, big towering final boss included and secret weapons formed after collecting the pieces. Gnosia goes for the laziest form of adaptation and tries to translate one to one mechanics that only make sense in a game. But, hey, among us in space! We can logically deduce who's the werewolf, but figuring a test that doesn't involve lame voting is too implausible.
>One Punch Man is more carried by its S1 animation than Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer story while very simple I find better than One Punch Man regardless of animation quality.
This is the standard OPM take. The hotter take has always been that OPM is carried by its story.
>JJK is a lot more carried by animation than anything else.
This one's also fairly lukewarm.
>Mha had good endings while not perfect they were still good.
Honestly this one is too. I'm not sure what people were expecting out of the ending that they didn't get (though people did seem more warm to the anime's ending and I don't know how different it actually is).
>Fairy Tail is awesome its a story about power of friendship but people complain about power of friendship in a power of friendship show
This one is a little hotter, but probably shouldn't be.
>5/10 is Mid not 7/10
Again, this is just fact, not even an opinion.
>Just because you dont like an anime/genre doesnt mean its bad objectively (sometimes things are and criticism is fine but i am not talking about that) A show can simply not be for you which is more than fine but a lot of people conflate that with something being bad.
This is just the *Fairy Tail* take again. It's not a hot take, the inverse is just a stupid take.
>Not every anime needs to be a 10/10 masterpiece sometimes a mid/generic show is great.
I get what you mean here, but I'm gonna take it a different way that is also true: just because a show is good, does not mean it's a 10/10. Far too many people will just give a 10 to everything and the number is far too overused. You're well within your right to give everything a 10/10, but I am less likely to really put weight to your opinions if you do.
>Spy x Family is fun but the plot has the progression of a snail with alzheimer.
I'm gonna double down on this and actually say that if you're watching *Spy x Family* "for the plot", then you're watching it wrong. It's clearly written as a slice of life, with the espionage plot being little more than set-dressing to set up the premise. SxF is at its best when it doesn't take its "plot" too seriously and is just an episodic series.
I liked it and obviously it was well produced but the fact that it got into the GOAT conversation seems insane to me.
Frieren is an extremely simple story, and that's not inherently a bad thing, but it'*s* a problem when people pretend it's complex. The narrative is straightforward, the themes are obvious, and the emotional beats are spelled out for the viewer. There are very few layers to unpack. Most episodes follow the exact same structure, something happens, Frieren reacts emotionally (or doesn't), a flashback explains why, she has a quiet realization, and the episode ends. That's not subtle writing, i's repetitive.
The pacing is also rough. Slow does not automatically mean thoughtful. Frieren often feels stagnant rather than contemplative, with many episodes adding nothing new to the story or characters. Out of almost thirty episodes, only a small portion actually moves anything forward in a meaningful way. Repeating the same emotional idea over and over isn't depth, it's redundancy.
People also confuse emotional response with strong writing. Yes, Himmel's death is sad, but that's basic human empathy. Feeling sad because someone dies doesn't make a story deep. Frieren relies heavily on nostalgia and loss to create emotion instead of conflict, tension, or character driven progression.
The world building is shallow. There's no real politics, culture, or ideological conflict. The demons aren't characters, they're just evil because they're demons. They exist as generic obstacles, not as narrative forces. There's no moral complexity there, no opposing worldview to challenge the protagonist.
Frieren herself is massively overpowered from the very beginning. She wins most fights effortlessly, faces almost no real danger, and her strength is explained by longevity and knowledge rather than shown struggle. That removes tension from the story. Flashbacks don't build arcs, they explain past sadness, which is a weak substitute for active character development.
Supporting characters aren't much better. Many of them exist only to create short emotional moments or reinforce the theme, not to drive the plot or create stakes. Remove several of them and almost nothing changes. Emotional presence is mistaken for narrative importance.
Frieren is a beautiful series, it has great atmosphere, strong direction, and excellent visuals. But beauty and mood are doing most of the heavy lifting. Strip that away and what's left is a very simple, low stake, repetitive narrative that people inflate into something far deeper than it actually is.
Liking Frieren is fine. Calling it a masterpiece of complex writing isn't. That's not analysis, that's aesthetic preference...
Gigguk has a bad rep from fate videos and mecha anime takes and people dont enjoy his content for whatever reasons valid and not valid and then just pile on.
For me he was a big inspiration for why I started making videos about anime and while I dont agree with him on everything in fact I disagree with him on a lot I still learn and find his videos enjoyable.
Anitubers in general on reddit arent viewed well regardless of how big or small and funny enough he is one of the better treated ones on r/anime
It honestly feels like it was written by someone with little to no real knowledge of football. As someone who’s been playing for over 10 years, I’m really struggling with it. I’m only two episodes in and I’m already thinking about dropping it.
The way it views the game is so surface-level that it actually hurts. Maybe I’m thinking too deeply about it, but so much of it feels straight-up wrong. Like, striker is **not** the most important position there all important, no one position is better/ more important, and football (NOT soccer) is 100000% a team sport. What are they even saying 😭
Yes, if you’re up front you need to be selfish at times, but you also need to understand that you’re not better than everyone else just because of your position. Twin, you need your team. There are 11 players on the pitch for a reason.
Episode 2 really pushed me over the edge. They’re told they’ll be playing in teams and everyone’s shocked like, “Wait… teams? But we’re all strikers?” And then the weirdo with the glasses goes, “Well back in the old days football was only strikers ☝🤓”
Like okay? We also used to live in caves and hunt to survive, but that doesn’t mean we should still be doing that now. Evolution exists for a reason, buddy.
I genuinely hope someone agrees with me because their whole view of football feels wrong and completely one-dimensional.
I agree with you but I also disagree dont look at it as a realistic portrayal of football nor mentality in general.
Its a very exagerated and different view think about it more like a fighting anime with a power system around football with very big liberties.
You need suspension of disbelief especially if its something you are familiar with.
Now if this was a documentary about football and they did this then yeah it would be straight ass lol.
The fact that my proposition, a FACT: that an anime is ONLY good if it's popular, good enough looking, makes money, and DON'T NEED TO HAVE A STORY, WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! After I Quit Anime because I have nothing to watch that is worth it (after 5 animes and no Goblin Slayer is not brutal enough), it's finally proven true. And I have to learn how to bot sites to win to make Solo Leveling season 2 AOTY, I really do. RATHER TO HE A TOURIST THAN A FAM EXCEPT FOR ANIME GAMES, BECAUSE THISE HAVE METAS AND STRATEGIES AND GAMEPLAY UNLIKE THE ACTUAL MATERIAL.
PS: Hentai of these anime are straight up better than the actual material.
I already recorded the video for the hot takes.
