My goat Urasawa being #3 without having to release anything new this year. Some of the most timeless stories in manga.
Nnekaddict2025-12-30 10:21

Number_r22025-12-30 07:59
For those wondering who did what, here's what they did in order from the top 10 list:
1. Creator of Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch, and Look Back (This one's already a no-brainer).
2. Writer of The Future I Saw which predicted the deaths of Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana, and also predicted earthquakes in 2011 and 2025.
3. Creator of 20th Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto.
4. Creator of Tomie, Uzumaki, and Gyo.
5. Actress who played Yoko Usami/Yellow Buster in the 2012 Super Sentai series Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters.
6. Creator of Witch Hat Atelier.
7. Creator of Planetes and Vinland Saga.
8. Creator of Jujutsu Kaisen.
9. Creator of Switch Girl!!.
10. Creator of One Piece, the highest selling manga series of all time.
CuntJab2025-12-30 08:40
Wow... WTF is the second one? My curiosity is piqued. Never heard of her.
Number_r22025-12-30 08:48
The Future I Saw is based on Ryo Tatsuki's own dream journal. Basically, she's somewhat the Japanese equivalent to Nostradamus.
the-legit-Betalpha2025-12-30 11:57
"the future I saw" is based on dreams of the future that she had.
One recent one she "predicted" back then but didn't happen was "a massive tsunami in July 2025 affecting Japan and neighbouring countries". There were an abnormal amount of viewers on Japan seismic activity livestream channels (some had ~25k-30k viewers) during this time.
Though there are some she predicted correctly, like the 2011 tohoku earthquake and tsunami. This was why people were extra wary. It was almost uncanny how accurate some of her predictions were.
Nijindia182025-12-30 13:34
But is it just another "predicts 1000 things to get 1 thing right" situation or is it like at least 30-40%?
the-legit-Betalpha2025-12-30 14:25
Don't remember exactly but I think she has a total of 15(?) predictions, around 1/3 has come true, ~1/3 false/too vague for coincidence, ~1/3 have dates that have yet to come.
For example, she predicted covid-19 happening in 2020. But it's incomplete since she also predicted it coming back 10 years later, which we can't confirm yet.
Some parts were later exaggerated/fabricated, such as the death of Princess Diana. From what I know, the "death" part was interpreted by readers and in her original dream, she didn't foresee her dying.
Seileach2025-12-30 21:30
If you search up all the happenings and her release dates, none of them are predictions.
KurapikaGoku2025-12-30 12:09
Yea bro me to I’m like wait there the person who predicted what ???
celloh2342025-12-30 14:44
>On November 24, 1976, Tatsuki dreamt about the sudden death of [Freddie Mercury](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury), she dreamt about him again on November 29, 1986, in which she saw the other band members of [Queen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(band)) and a statue of an unknown man. Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991,[^(\[6\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Future_I_Saw#cite_note-6) exactly 15 years after Tatsuki dreamed about his death.
she dreamt the death (not a very uncommon dream topic) of a very famous man and that man happened to die 15 years afterwards

Vinland Saga fans rise up
Aura_Guard2025-12-30 10:25
Im surprised to see Witch Hat Atelier and Switch Girl in here. I probably know only one maybe two people who even knows(not read) what these are.
genasugelan2025-12-30 12:30
Witch Hat Atelier spreads around quite a lot through word of mouth, even if you don't see it often on social media.
DarkDonut752025-12-30 12:39
Also this's Fujimoto's opinion and he has a reputation for being a random guy
Maxximillianaire2025-12-30 16:25
He didn't make the list
flashmozzg2025-12-30 18:08
Expect this to change next year but also was surprised to see it for this year. Not sure what attention did Sentai girl attract though.
Bad_Doto_Playa2025-12-30 16:52
Yeah I'm surprised as well, if it's solely about awareness to anime and manga I have 0 idea how that got there (I haven't read the article yet but I can't if I wanted to because it's pay walled). Fujimoto makes complete sense being #1.
Pacify_2025-12-30 10:52

absolutelynotaname2025-12-30 12:53
Surprised not seeing KnY author consider how big the movie release was
fengzhi2025-12-30 13:28
The fact you refer to her as "KnY author" and not her pen name says enough. Not enough people go out of their way to remember the author unlike say Fujimoto.
browert402025-12-30 13:15
But what did 5 do in 2025?
middleupperdog2025-12-30 15:04
One piece getting outrun by Switch Girl!! is hilarious in a year where protests all over the world are flying mugiwara flags
turkeygiant2025-12-30 21:57
Yeah some of the order in these rankings is way off, and for a few I feel like while they might be well known names, they didn't particularly do anything of note THIS YEAR. Like it seems strange to have Junji Ito so high on the list, Eiichiro Oda so low on the list, and Hideo Kojima not on the list at all despite him releasing a pretty huge game to western audiences in Death Stranding II.
elreniel20202025-12-30 15:25

Oglifatum2025-12-30 08:54
I started looking for the names of Mamoru Oshii, Masamune Shirow or Hideaki Anno...
And then I realized that I have to accept that I am old.
CrimsonAntifascist2025-12-30 12:34
Oda at 10 with the Strawhat flag popping up at just about any revolution and/or riot seems kinda low.
Avaricee2025-12-30 15:16
Yeah. From the article title it sounds like it would have to be people who did something this year that warranted attention or at least something happened around their work. Some of these people as far as I can tell didn't do anything or I haven't heard of their work having any sort of update. Meanwhile, One Piece flags popping up at real life protests is becoming more common and going viral each time.
absolutelynotaname2025-12-30 12:54
I was expecting Kenshi Yonezu but I suppose he isn't that popular outside of Japan
browert402025-12-30 13:38
I clicked the link and number 5 is actually Marina Lisa Komiya, probably because of her manga.

koteshima2nd2025-12-30 07:17
My dude had probably the best year for any mangaka in recent times. Getting your one shots adapted by multiple studios, the success and beauty of Look Back's adaptation, the insane popularity of Reze arc, CSM manga ongoing pretty strong, and getting Kenshi Yonezu and Utada Hikaru make songs for your series.
I hope it continues until we eventually get an adaptation of Goodbye, Eri and Fire Punch.
KickedUrAss2025-12-30 10:33
>CSM manga ongoing pretty strong
That's not true at all. Part 2 has lost like 80% of its readers. I think no manga has achieved that, not even Boruto. It really fell off.
FHI_iSmile2025-12-30 10:48
That's not true at all. People might not like it as much as part 1, but it is still the most popular manga on Manga Plus
judgmentblade2025-12-30 11:35
The clowns who bitch constantly on Reddit despite coming back every week don't make up the entire CSM fanbase lmao
Mecha_Link2025-12-30 12:09
The fact we haven't heard anything about a Goodbye, Eri adaptation yet makes me wonder if MAPPA actually has rights to it, but is simply too busy adapting CSM to work on it yet. They did claim they wanted to adapt more of his works
Shinkopeshon2025-12-30 12:15
I'm sure it's gonna happen, they even did his short stories
Between those, Look Back and two Chainsaw Man projects, there's only so much they can work on every year - and you don't want to adapt his entire work in the span of a few years either
Maxximillianaire2025-12-30 16:29
Mappa has only worked on chainsaw man. They didn't do Look Back and the other one-shots
ranixon2025-12-30 14:21
Goodbye, Eric it's a really good manga, but it has to be directed carefully. I think that is hard to archive the same effect of "what is real" if you don't do it well
chooxy2025-12-30 14:36
Friendship ended with Dennis, now Eric is my best friend
UnquestionabIe2025-12-30 20:23
Goodbye,Eri hit me super hard as I read it shortly after my mother passed away. That it also included his usual "wtf did I just read" moments helped me a ton with not getting overwhelmed with grief. Nope those emotions are going to remain unresolved and just pop up at random to derail me emotionally.
koteshima2nd2025-12-30 23:06
Like a random explosion
Pale_Letterhead40342025-12-31 01:17
the song jane doe was amazing. are they high profile in japan or something?
koteshima2nd2025-12-31 01:48
Yeah, Kenshi Yonezu has a good number of songs that topped Japan's Billboard top 100 for days to weeks. He also made many songs for anime (e.g. Peace Sign for MHA, orion for 3-gatsu no Lion). Utada Hikaru's more prominently known for her songs for Kingdom Hearts, but she, too, had many pop songs that topped charts back in the day. Whenever she's invilved with a project, you can expect its gonna be good.
94Temimi2025-12-30 07:42
Look Back, Reze and 17-26 all coming out within 12 months is a generational run I don't think any mangaka can ever replicate.
Give him his crown, he's earned it
ali941272025-12-31 01:25
Soichiro Yamamoto had three of his works adapted in 2022. There was Teasing Master Takagi season 3 and a movie, In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, and When Will Ayumi Make His Move?. Think it’s a pretty comparable feat, even if not as glazed. 3 series and a movie in a year is incredible.
Mangaka Kuzushiro also just had an anime adaptation finished with another adaptation on the way.
CitronClassic6722025-12-31 02:03
Additionally, Nuoto got both Orb and 100 meters adapted within a year. Not only is the writing genuinely top notch, but they both got stellar productions too. Given the fact that Nuoto is still only in his 20s and has already made two masterpieces I’d definitely consider him to be a name to look out for in the future.
ali941272025-12-31 02:24
Yeah, CLAMP and Rumiko Takahashi have also had similar feats, so this really isn’t that unprecedented nor is it unlikely to occur again in the future. That said, has Fujimoto made a contract with a devil? Probably.
The_nickums2025-12-31 15:49
Not to say that isn't incredible. But 17-26 is something else.
I've never seen or heard of anything like that happening before. Not only in terms of a production committee deciding to adapt one-shot unofficial works, but for them all to be absolute hits, better than some other author's entire works.
Its just unheard of.
dinliner082025-12-30 08:31

Oda is really that low in world attention in 2025? I'd figure "the woman who wrote about earthquakes" would have swapped spots with him. Not sure how relevant she is on a worldwide scale, unless shes specifically talked about in Asia alone
ali941272025-12-31 01:33
Lot of Hong Kong tourists were afraid to go to Japan because of her. Don’t know about the rest of Asia, but I imagine there were similar fears going around.
ian_ntf2025-12-30 11:40

ThaOppanHaimar2025-12-30 17:22
It's confusing how Chainsaw Man author is at top 1. I felt like either One Piece Author, or the Your Name Director would be on the top of the list. And maybe in the top 3 the Demon Slayer mangaka.
Meanwhile the one piece mangaka is only at top 10...
ginger66162025-12-30 19:26
It’s funny how notable he is as a person, a lot of mangakas can write famous manga and still be unknown, seems like fujimoto is his own brand
UnquestionabIe2025-12-30 20:32
Happy to see Urasawa get attention. I first got into his work in late 2005 when I moved across the country on an almost whim for college. Knew nobody, was over a thousand miles from home, and legit have no idea how I managed it. Anyway talking to random people about anime and the like and they recommended Monster, which the anime was relatively recent at the time. That sent me down a rabbit hole.
Over the next few months got super into any translations of his work I could find. Adored 20th Century Boys big time. Remember buying every volume or Pluto as they released in English, being especially thrilled at the concept as I had been similarly obsessed with Tezuka after playing the GBA Astro Boy game (which is still one of my favorites on the platform, a great love letter to his work).
MonoFauz2025-12-31 00:31

That's not true at all. Part 2 has lost like 80% of its readers. I think no manga has achieved that, not even Boruto. It really fell off.
Between those, Look Back and two Chainsaw Man projects, there's only so much they can work on every year - and you don't want to adapt his entire work in the span of a few years either
Give him his crown, he's earned it
Mangaka Kuzushiro also just had an anime adaptation finished with another adaptation on the way.
I've never seen or heard of anything like that happening before. Not only in terms of a production committee deciding to adapt one-shot unofficial works, but for them all to be absolute hits, better than some other author's entire works.
