It's still not mainstream atleast in India, so theres still more money to be made, anyways I'm glad that gatekeeping is not a concept here

Most people I have tried to introduce them to anime, they left it after. They still think its very weird for an adult watching cartoons lol
bakaa_ningen2025-12-30 16:49
I personally introduced my friend to anime from naruto (hindi dub) and then he went on to fully complete it and now he's watching umaru chan (in sub) rn
Trying my best to make him watch yuri (I'm in love with villainess has hindi dub), he still won't give in tho

Most gateway anime should only be dubbed in the regional language they are comfortable with and they should only be popular shounen anime, maybe something went wrong here?
heimdal772025-12-31 12:22
Then they go and proceed to watch a bunch of shows and movies about comicbook characters.

Everyone is welcomed as long as they don't try to change anime. Gatekeeping is important or do you want uneducated masses flooding the market resulting in the creation of more slop. The same mistake what the western media did should not be repeated again.

Thankfully, CGDCT seems still to be niche in the west outside like 3 anime (and even those are usually one-offs, the genre as a whole doesn't seem to get mainstream). It's still relatively the same it was 20 years ago. And if it changed, it certainly was because of 100% JP influence.
At least for now, the genre is in the best shape it has been in quite some years.
sunjay1402025-12-30 17:20
True. Just look what happened to Persona after Persona 5.
StucksaTraffic2025-12-30 16:34
I don’t think you’ll get anything from Gatekeeping an anime?

Anime is way too unpopular here that we can even consider gatekeeping, people in 2020-21 had to sign petitions to get shinkai movies screening in a country of billion people. Only now that we can get anime movies like csm reze arc and demon slayer infinity castle here. Still there's a long way to go, personally I want a good population of non action shounen fans too, because you can't imagine the pain of being a Sol anime fan in india who's willing to buy merchandise yet can't have any, we have to pay more money to get the same thing as others. I was looking for bocchi the rock hoodie and not even 3rd party sellers have it let alone a licensed one, I gave up and ordered a custom hoodie from Amazon lol
Kadmos12025-12-30 16:58
With India's big population, I do wonder what would constitute Japanese anime becoming mainstream there.
bakaa_ningen2025-12-30 17:16
Dub(good ones) is the way to go, every single indian who has TV in their house and was born after 2000 loves Doraemon and shinchan . From Solo levelling to even some hentai(censored hentai lol) has dub in hindi nowadays, so that is helping it.
The most viewed anime episode of Spy x family dub in hindi has like 9 million views in muse india

There's literally nothing in india like "anime merch" lmao there's only Naruto and jujutsu kaisen stuff lol custom stuff is the way to go atleast for another 20-30 years
bakaa_ningen2025-12-30 17:08
Yeah man, I learned it the hard way, atleast in amazon you gonna find Aot, CSM and One piece stuffs, but let's not talk about flipkart and Meesho(indian temu) lmao
monkey-balls672025-12-30 17:22
I just hope it stays under japanese control، i am having noghtmare aboyt Hollywood
AwkwardForm74042025-12-30 17:34
which might not be a good thing unless the actual talents are paid fairly but they probably won't also this is causing US to invest in anime industry and they will probably the reason why we get so much slop this these days they make what works even if its trash I hope no one from outside of japan has any creative control over anime Please.
LegendaryZXT2025-12-30 19:44
Reasonably sure none of that is making its way back to the laborers actually _creating_ that value.
Twigling2025-12-31 09:45
Sadly that is indeed the case - the vast majority of any profits goes to the production committees; they hire a studio to do the work for a fixed fee which has a small profit margin built in, but if the production goes over budget the studio usually has to absorb the cost themselves. The studios certainly don't make much money unless they too are part of the production committee - a not insignificant number of studios operate at a loss (in 2024 this applied to about a third of anime studios).
