In the anime industry I could see AI being used to assist animators, fill in some percentages of frames. Script writing? Screw off Anno
AManHere2025-12-30 18:01
I am sure that's what he means. Writing the script takes x, but animating every frame, 25 frames per second -- that makes a lot of time, people and money
zapdoszaperson2025-12-30 18:03
He specifically mentions using AI for script writing as an acceptable replacement to humans.
lewis10002025-12-30 18:06
ew
Alt22212025-12-30 18:34
to be fair an ai 100% could have wrote solo leveling.
Ghostie_242025-12-30 18:04
>“You probably wouldn’t be able to distinguish between a script written by AI and one written by a human,” the director said, adding that since “humans are essentially doing things similar to AI,” it might be “acceptable to have AI take over human jobs.”
Laraso_2025-12-30 17:57
Yea once those UBI checks start hitting my account we can have a discussion, until then AI can fuck off
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:00
Considering we apparently have a labour shortage (and how shit most people actually are at their jobs) why not.
Just look at OPM S3 and tell me AI could not have done a better job..
Maqoba2025-12-30 18:03
So the choice is slop or ai slop?
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:05
Just because its made by AI doesnt mean it has to be slop.
This whole AI witchhunt by teens who have never worked a day in their life is really wild to see.
carbinePRO2025-12-30 18:09
>Just because its made by AI doesnt mean it has to be slop.
Anything made by AI is slop.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:12
Hurr durr AI bad
carbinePRO2025-12-30 18:17
Yes, replacing humans with AI is bad. I can't believe that needs to be said. You sit here and say we're experiencing a labor shortage. Do you think replacing people with AI will help or exacerbate that problem? Not to mention the exorbitant amount of natural resources required to power the LLM data storehouses. Do you think a heavier reliance on this technology is at humanity's best interest given that it could put us in an energy crisis?
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:21
People have a massive misconception about "AI". Running existing LLMs is actually quite cheap, training new ones is whats siphoning all the ressources.
Simply streaming anime is already costing a lot of energy. Im not naive enough to say we should all touch grass instead of enjoying our hobbies.
AI is not going away, even when the investment bubble will burst.
carbinePRO2025-12-30 18:24
Thank you for just rewording what I already said while dodging my other points.
Average AI glazer.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:26
Uh huh. Average AI hater making strawmen I guess.
bihtydolisu2026-01-03 02:35
And all over the internet, this is how the discussion takes place with no one really discussing it, everyone listening to their fandom echo chamber or whatever and saying the exact same talking points because that is where the information came from they are acting on. But note where this sort of screaming and wailing comes from, the professional victims, always going on about all their problems, part time Pokemon trainers, and with the philosophy of art just being able to draw something. Almost none see it as a form of communication. Look at Deviantart as the indicative age group! YCH, OCs, adoptions, and every other mania for owning things occurring. Its art **therapy** and "content" from art influencers more than anything else. Its angry kids screaming in Walmart and appropriating the next drama to fuel their perpetual sense of victimhood.
bihtydolisu2026-01-03 02:43
Take a look around at the market demographic and what is being churned out! It might as well be AI! "Think of the human!" I try not to! Arrested development kids drawing their refrigerator art which is their only lot in life seeing as they don't know anything about the classical art philosophy other than painting a pretty picture. LOL, how many times I have heard "I thought it was beautiful until I learned it was AI." So it was soulful until it suddenly wasn't.
Have you ever seen a collection of various anime fandom artists all competing for their niche market? It ALL LOOKS THE SAME! Who's copying who? Millions of these people, probably your demographic, making mindless art "to be cool." It might as well be AI because its all made by the same fandom elements and mentalities!

I certainly would not miss localizers..
N7CombatWombat2025-12-30 18:19
And exactly who's work do you think is going to be used as training data for AI localizers? Just get over it. A localizers job isn't to 1 to 1 translate, it's to attempt to translate the idea in a manner as close to the original as possible using elements from the culture the localization is being made for. It's not going to be perfect, sometimes it's going to be wrong, sometimes it's going to be right and you just think it's wrong. But ultimately, localization is closer to art than it is to science and when/if AI starts doing it, it's going to use all the localizations that came before it to do the work, and there is no net gain for you looking for a 1 to 1 translation.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:26
I did not ask for localizers, as such I can complain about them as much as I want. I grew up watching anime with proper fansubs. Simulcasting killed that, but its nice to have. If AI means we get better anime I wont complain.
If its an art it cant be right or wrong. Considering how often localizers in the past have tried to push their own agenda, its right to criticise that.
N7CombatWombat2025-12-30 18:31
Fan subbers localized too, many of them went on to become paid localizers even. I've seen like one real instance of the whole "agenda pushing" thing, and that group did get rightly slammed for it. Everything else has just been people not remotely understanding the original meaning in the first place and making assumptions because they read/heard something they didn't like. Just like a certain subset of the US population who got upset that Homelander was one the villains in The Boys.
If you want to avoid localizers then learn Japanese and Japanese culture, head over there and live in it for a few years, then you can get mad and indignant at the actual scripts instead of the middleman that you think is ruining your anime.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:33
You are blowing this way out of proportion. Why do you defend localizers so much? Are you one of them?
N7CombatWombat2025-12-30 18:34
I defend anyone who gets shit on because the person doing the shitting has no fucking clue what they're talking about.
UMP45isnotflat2025-12-30 18:35
I see, you are talking out of your ass then. Forgot I was on reddit for a second.
N7CombatWombat2025-12-30 18:38
Yeah, what do I know? I've only been watching anime for 30 years and know a fair bit about how the industry in Japan and outside it works because whenever I hear something that sounds like bullshit, I actually go look up what the process is and 9 times out of 10, the bullshit is just that, bullshit assumptions from people who know nothing about the actual process and instead go with whatever they make up in their head.
Zephyr_Bloodveil2025-12-30 18:01
Thanks for telling me I shouldn't watch his anime.
N7CombatWombat2025-12-30 18:03
I've said the same thing. The most ethical thing you can do with generative AI is to train it on your own content and use it as a tool to that still has human intervention involved. We aren't at that stage, and it will be absolutely used in an exploitive manner even after that point. But, as much as I hate generative AI, the cat is out of that bag.
IFapToCalamity2025-12-30 18:04
And here is where we all react without full context of the clickbait headline:
NNKarma2025-12-30 18:14
I hoped to see the text as a comment, it can mean so many things
UltiMikee2025-12-30 18:07
His take is a little nuanced but it’s disappointing to hear that he’s willing to accept it as a useable technology. I would’ve hoped the director for such a profound work of art would have the common sense to speak out against such anti-creative tools.
Ashteron2025-12-30 18:24
My impression is he just finds it inevitable. He sounds acquiescent, rather than thrilled.
Alarming_Ask_2442025-12-30 18:08
Interesting thing to say for a man whose most famous work is about human connection
RPO7772025-12-30 18:16
This is a mistranslation/mischaracterizaiton of what Anno actually said. I found the original interview here:
What Anno ACTUALLY says is that because it will be difficult to distinguish when AI is writing a script and when a human is writing, it is necessary to establish rules on what boundaries exists for copyright *in terms of what the AI can be permitted to take/learn* from.
In particular, Anno distinguishes between an AI simply gathering *other peoples'* work vs a company teaching an AI using ONLY ITS OWN owned IP and having them establish AIs based on that copyright ownership. He's saying people should be limited to applying AI learning only from their own IP or public domain, and not from proprietary IPs.
Q: In Hollywood, there was a strike in 2023 between the SCript Writers Union and Actors Guild over the issue of Gen AI learning skills, images and copyrights over the impact of AI on the industry. How do you feel about this issue?
Anno: THe issue of AI is similar to the issue of broader workers' rights in that it's extremely difficult in reconciling how people look at it, since people in different positions see things very differently. However, because Gen AI already exists, we need to accept that this is going to be a thing going forward, and we need to look for a middle ground. I think the fear that this is going to take your job is a real fear. For example, it may be difficult to distinguish a script written by a person or an AI. Since a human is doing something very close to something that AI is doing, it is possible that an AI could do just do what the human was doing. **Because of this, it is important that rules and boundaries are set, so that AI can only make use of what you (meaning the AI user) has already done. It can't be that people can do whatever they want.** For example, if Toho uses it's own historical Godzilla movies to teach an AI, then has the AI write a script to create a new godzilla movie, how could anyone object? You can't, because Toho is using only its own IP.
Crimson-Forever2025-12-30 18:18
No it's not, greed drives a significant portion of humanity and the idea of not having to pay illustrators and voice actors is what people like this fantasize about. Elon can talk about how much better things will be but the gap between haves and have nots will just increase to unmanageable amounts.
New-Interaction18932025-12-30 18:19
Imagine a future were every show is made by an AI specifically made to meet your tastes
You can get a new show in few minutes after you watched that.
If there are parts that you don't like an AI will watch it and remove that parts.
An AI coul even watch it entirely and summarise the whole show for you and tell you how to properly review and defend it online without having to watch it.
Even better the AI could write and post all of that alone, so you don't have to think too much to get karma from commenting about anime.
