Anime similar to Attack on Titan? Dark, twisty, intense recs!
Finished Attack on Titan—still obsessed with the twists, moral gray areas, epic action, and emotional depth. What anime gives similar vibes (high stakes, humanity vs threats, psychological stuff)?
Top ones I hear:
* Vinland Saga (brutal revenge + anti-war themes)
* Kaiju No. 8 (monster fights, protagonist becomes the threat)
* Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (conspiracy + hard-hitting twists)
What’s your #1 rec if you loved AoT? Drop it below! (No spoilers pls)

I think they both have strengths, CG in my opinion, executes the ending better. AOT as a show overall has higher and more consistently quality throughout.
I was occasionally bored throughout CG, but the ending actually turned a solid 7 or 8/10 show into a 9/10 one.
Attack on Titan was probably a 10/10 show that was turned into a 9/10 by the ending. Not that it was bad, it just wasn't at the same level as what had come before it.

Gangsta
Kaiju no. 8 ain’t similar at all beyond ”fight big things”, and Vinland Saga, while it thematically shares some things, the vibes are very different.
Abusive Parents: "Takopi's Original Sin"
Edgy, orchestral, & Melodramatic Dark Souls: "Made in Abyss"
Slasher film: "Higurashi Naku no Koro Ni" (it's really old and dated though, and it must be seen in release order)
Eldritch Dread: "The Summer When Hikaru Died"
Urban Legend Pokemon (Getto Daze!): "Dark Gathering"
High Stakes (death, mutilation), despair (zawa!), and meta-mind-games: "Kaiji"
So I have to say Desert punk.
But death note is 🔥
Its also got that sweet, sweet Sawano OST like AoT
Vinland Saga is completely different from AOT. War themes yes, but the message being sent will be completely different and you’ll be disappointed in Season 2 if dark action theme is what you’re looking for.
Kaiju No 8 is something I’ll never recommend to anyone.
FMAB is top tier. Definitely give it a watch
i would say its more seinen than shonen. theres basically no comedic relief and if a joke is made its within the context of its world. takes its time to breathe and let you get invested until it puts the knive in your stomach and twists it. in the good and the bad ways.
