Romcom/Romance shows with pathetic loser MC
I feel like every time someone asks for recs for romance or romcom shows, there’s usually a requirement for “no pathetic loser wimpy MCs”. And it just gives me the impression like they are a ton of shows out there with such MCs. But I can’t personally think of too many. Maybe what I consider that is different or I have a higher tolerance for it but I just want to know which shows and which MCs do people refer to when they want to avoid them.
I feel like we can leave out the most obvious one, Kazuya from KanoKari.
I think Tomozaki is one too but the appeal of the show is that he’s trying to change. Actually, a lot of the MCs I consider to slightly encroach that category do end up improving, the biggest and fastest I can think of is Kyo from BokuYaba.
While I enjoy Nagatoro, I do think Senpai is one from the category. But his improvement is rather slow and I’m assuming spills to the manga
I have seen similar claims for Tadano from Komi, but I honestly feel he’s a regular guy.
I feel shows and MCs like Kuroiwa Medaka can get frustrating but at the same time, I think you can tell early on what you’re getting yourself into with shows like these
So yeah, who are the loser pathetic MCs in romcoms and romance that people despise and avoid so much ?

Kyo from The Dangers In My Heart.
Mc from Please Put Them On, Takamine-san.
Like no one actually watched The Dangers in My Heart or Dress-Up have issues with Kyo or Gojo once they took the chance to get to know them.
Lastly, because of how you mentioned a lot of male lead romance is focused on masculinity these days I find myself enjoying yuri romance more because on average I find the female leads there more interesting and relatable. There's still plenty of MMC shows I love like the ones I mentioned, but I usually don't watch most of the more average ones anymore.
I've seen tons of people complaining about Gojo. I like him but it's not true that he's universally accepted.
I think what they mean is "no indecisive" MC. they don't want a harem or some dude stringing a girl along with endless misunderstandings, mishearing's excetera. think the MC in Rental Girlfriend. that's what i think they're talking about.
Also, I saw your reply to another comment, and I think there’s also a possibility that some people just consider anything not masculine/manly to be a loser or pathetic
Yeah. Even if its MC's relationship role is clearly intended to be reversed in certain romance anime (and not even actually bad), people still judged him as such
* aharen-san wa hakarenai
* engaged to the unidentified
* horimiya
* kiss him not me
* love after world domination
* love, chunibyou and other delusions
* the magical girl and the evil lieutenant
* monster musume
* my love story with yamada-kun at level 999
* Nodame cantibille
* plastic memories
* pseudo harem
* wotakoi
Maison Ikkoku
Nana to Kaoru
Kubo Won't Let Me be Invisible
A lot of these "loser" or "pathetic" MCs come with caveats-- he often has some redeeming qualities (usually that he's """nice""") in order for the female main character to fall in love with him, or the point of the series is that he develops into someone worthy of the female main character (sometimes by developing bonds through the female main character's social network or other members of his harem, but y'know).
And it was a pretty solid amount of manga, to start rattling them off (not all these have an adaptation): Yancha Gal no Anjou-san, Nagatoro-san, Sono Bisque Doll, Dangers in My Heart, Shikimori-san. Extend it a years and you get a few more like Akutsu-san and Kubo among others.
So to my mind that's the type of protagonist people are referencing.
If you're interested in Yuri, I'd definitely recommend this one. Gig worker falls in love with a member of a local band and the whole thing is incredibly cute. I love that all characters are adults (high school romance gets boring).
