Could 2026 surpass 2006 in being a legendary year for Anime?
Just this entire season lineup alone is bonkers, and it doesn't even cover the entirety of whats to come next year: https://www.instagram.com/p/DQQfcfLk4gN/
In context of 2006, we had the amount of iconic hits that came out were:
- Death Note
- Code Geass
- Black Lagoon
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Hellsing Ultimate
- Ouran High School Host Club
- Paprika
- NHK
- Ergo Proxy
- Nana

Just as personal taste, it's got Tamon's B-Side, Ikoku Nikki, and Yozakura Family s2, too.
My only qualm would be that as stacked as this season is, it’s mostly sequel seasons.
But then there’s the whole rest of the year. Only time will tell but we’ll be eating good regardless.
And for new series, there a number (especially The Darwin Incident in the upcoming winter season).
But considering them both combined, that doesn't necessarily place it ahead of any of the past several years.
Also, I mainly judge a year for anime based on the new series which debut and are initially released within it, rather than the continuations and returns. 2006 was on a different level. For different new series, both 2006 and 2004 were to me the best years of all time.
Quadruply true when you consider that 2026 has Kanan and Chained Soldier and 2006 doesnt
But imo 2011 is still the best year. It had
- Hunter x Hunter
- Steins Gate
- Fate Zero
- Madoka Magica
- Gintama
- Anohana
- Nichijou
- Chihayafuru
- Mawaru Penguindrum...
Spring 2006 on its own has 5+ classics:
* Gintama
* Ouran High School Host Club
* Black Lagoon
* The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
* Nana
* When They Cry
* Aria the Natural
And that's not even touching some of the deep cuts like Simoun.
If you grab the whole year you can also tack on Hellsing Ultimate, Ergo Proxy, Welcome to the NHK, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Death Note, Code Geass, and Paprika. And again, I'm not even diving into the truly deep cuts.
2006 was on something else entirely.
I mean that isn't all that is coming out in 2026 lol.
For new adaptions/works you got numerous notable works:
- A Witch's Life in Mongol
- Witch Hat Atelier
- Marriagetoxin
- Akane-banashi
- Daemons of the Shadow Realm
- Ikoku Nikki
- Mao
- Psyren
- The Darwin Incident
- Liar Game
- Behind the Supermarket, Smoking with You.
- Sparks of Tomorrow
Numerous sequels/remakes to Ghost in the Shell, Apothecary Diaries, Saga of Tanya the Evil S2, Re Zero, Hells Paradise, Golden Kamuy, Trigun Stargaze, Bleach, Ascendance of a Bookworm, Ace of the Diamond, Mononoke, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Slime, MSG Hathaway's Flash Part 2, The Elusive Samurai
You also have plenty of announced stuff like Yona of the Dawn S2, just recently Historie, or other sequels in production that could come out in 2026, but even for what we know for just Spring/Winter, and some in Summer, to me this is the most loaded year, of this decade so far in terms of pure number of notable titles. Whether that beats out 2006 is another question (probably not) however, this looks to be a very very strong year.
Like I don't think 95% of the shows u mentioned will be remembered as classics. No one's gonna talk about "Marriagetoxin" in the same way as any anime from the list OP gave
Yes there are some good shows in 2026, but you can say that about every year
If we are going to be using "talked" about as the definition, then actually a lot of the shows in OP's list don't apply either anymore lol. You really think shows like Black Lagoon and Ouran HS Club are relevant for most modern anime fans? I think Haruhi is a good example of a series that had a massive falling off where it was insanely popular and no new fan has likely seen it. Outside of a few battle shonen, and maybe the occasional exception show....no anime really stand the test of time for most newer fans. Plus subjectively and personally, 2006 is notable for the influence/quantity of many works released that year...however, I wouldn't say it's impossible for any work for me to eclipse those. I like many of those on that list, however, they largely aren't magnum opuses either.
To me it's about quality and yeah if you don't think a new original IP from Kyoto Animation, a new work out of Hiromu Arakawa, past highly esteemed works like Liar Game/Psyren or beautifully animated works like Witch Hat Atelier or A Witch From Mongolia (again off potential trailers I know) don't have a chance to elevate this year above others, not mention the long long list of sequels, I don't know what to say. A good manga accurate adaption of GITS clears literally everything OP listed from 2006 in my opinion. A Historie adaption would also clear most of what is on that list. I care more about UC Gundam than CG, even as a fan. Again if you think it's just JJK and Frieren I think that speaks more to your own preferences, than any legit discussion about quality here.
This is not an average year. I am not even saying 2026 could compare but it is a very loaded year, in terms of variety (it does feel like there is a work for everyone) and highly rated sequels. I think you are extremely downplaying it's potential off that comment. There is a lot more, and frankly more interesting titles than the two you named. That is all I am contesting here, not that it will be remembered with same love as 2011 and 2006.
So: no.
there are minor peaks at 98-99, and then inconsistently from 2011 onward (probably meaning more anime is being created). but if you add one more great anime to the listing, it is surprisingly likely to land on a year with no others.
