A historical epic set in ancient times, Historie tells the story of Eumenes, a young man with quick wits and a vast destiny to fulfill. In time, he’ll become a famed army commander and personal secretary to Alexander the Great—but the road to this glory is fraught with danger…
Well, LIDENFILMS is an unpredictable studio in terms of quality. Curious what the staff will be that will work on it.
YoloJoloHobo2026-01-01 06:48
Does it have a lot of action? I can definitely see LIDENFILMS making an adaptation similar to Orb if the action is the same. If it's more like Vinland Saga for action then it'll be rough.
MisoSoup2472026-01-01 07:03
Its been awhile since I read the manga but its kinda like the reverse of Vinland Saga? Not as many fights when the MC is young but as he gets older and eventually becomes an adult, you see a lot more, especially large scale warfare.
YoloJoloHobo2026-01-01 07:10
I see. Most anime struggle with big crowds and such so we probably will be in for CGI blobs if the show gets there. But if LIDENFILMS brings their A game, the non-action sequences should be good as long as the story is as well.
SSjjlex2026-01-01 07:12
For the 1st cour, very little. At least not outside of your usual 1v1s so the studio can certainly handle it. Maybe not amazingly, but it'll do.
If we get a 2nd cour it might get rough, but smart directing and reworking can alleviate some production shortcomings I think.
Its not until a hypothetical cour 4+ where you really need good production to pull off what happens.
SSjjlex2026-01-01 04:27
God I've been desperately awaiting an official announcement ever since it got leaked over a year back.
Praying for a good adaptation for this. Visual looks good at least.
Zeallfnonex2026-01-01 04:29
So... An Alexander Hamilton to Alexander the Great then? OK, we'll see where this goes...
lactoseAARON2026-01-01 04:50
Let’s hope this is a Engi Medalist situation and doesn’t end the streak of great adaptations for Afternoon manga
nezeta2026-01-01 06:31
Although I personally liked it, Wandance might have ended the streak...
lactoseAARON2026-01-01 06:38
Damn didn’t know that was a Afternoon manga, ok nvm streak over hopefully it ain’t the start of a new streak of bad adaptations
Meiolore2026-01-01 09:26
Wandance is so hilarious that I'm convinced that they are doing it for marketing. The anime would be so much less popular if they animate it properly.
duga4042026-01-01 05:07
Ayo Alexander the Great??? In an anime???
baquea2026-01-01 06:27
There's also [Alexander Senki](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1442/Alexander_Senki), which is janky but fun.
DragoSphere2026-01-01 07:13
Does Fate Zero count lol?
RPO7772026-01-01 07:49
It's more about his dad thus far than about Alexander the Great.
duga4042026-01-01 10:08
Still sounds pretty nice
rockseiaxii2026-01-01 09:54
Historie is probably the last of the big ongoing series (or popular titles of all time) from Monthly Afternoon.
Currently ongoing titles from Afternoon that have received anime adaptations:
- Ōkiku Furikabutte (Big Windup!)
- Skip and Loafer
- Darwin Incident (will air this season)
- Heavenly Delusion
- Wave, Listen to Me!
- Blue Period
- Medalist (s2 this season)
- Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture (originally released in the now defunct sister publication Evening, the sequel is now ongoing in Afternoon)
- Wandance
- Yakuza Fiancé
Other notable titles from Afternoon:
- Kiseiju (Parasyte)
- Oh! My Goddess
- Spirit of Wonder
- Gun Smith Cats
- Blade of the Immortal
- Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
- BLAME!
- Genshiken
- Mushishi
- Mysterious Girlfriend X
- Vinland Saga (moved from Weekly Magazine)
- Sora No Manimani
- Knights of Sidonia
Afternoon has been known for being the publication that balances artistic quality with commercialism.
But anime adaptations of Afternoon comics have been sketchy because it’s an imprint of Kodansha (known for questionable adaptations of their material)
ABARA-DYS2026-01-01 13:02
There is also Eden: It's an Endless World!
It's pretty old at this point. Think ended around 2008, but you never know. Maybe we'll get an adaptation at some point, but I think the material is just too heavy for many.
aohige_rd2026-01-01 13:46
Honestly, I've been wishing someone picks up the Bakumatsu era sequel of Mugen no Juunin (Blade of Immortal) for anime adaptation, but at this point it's unlikely
SandPieSandSay2026-01-01 12:03
Man LIDENFILMS really non-stop working.
MetaThPr4h2026-01-01 12:27
> Original work by Hitoshi Iwaaki (Parasyte)
Honest to god "that's all I need to read"
I freaking love Parasyte, even read the manga while watching the anime again during a rewatch I organized a goddamn eternity ago, looking forward to this one!
ChiggaOG2026-01-01 20:06
The story of the Greek General who succeeded Alexander the Great. The fun begins to see what they cut out from historical records. It means this anime cycle had companies going after fictionalized historical content.
Iron_Kingpin2026-01-02 07:28
Well that seems interesting. I was thinking the faces were kinda long and stuff, turns out it's the same author as Parasyte.
batmansoundtrack2026-01-01 04:03
Holy shit. Could be incredible.
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:18
Could?!
It is incredible!!!
I am so excited. Holy crap, I thought this would never het adapted.
Ho my gosh. Jesus. History and plots, yes!!!
GinJoestarR2026-01-01 12:41
It depends on the anime staff, a good manga could get a horrible adaptation and ruin the IP image forever. *cough* Promised Neverland S2, OPM S3, Nanatsu no Taizai S3 *cough*
Maxizag1232026-01-01 04:03
Wow, I heard about this manga and that the author sadly has pretty bad health issues so he will probably never continue it at this point but maybe the anime can? (since we already know the ending)
Mana_Croissant2026-01-01 04:05
If the author can’t continue how do you know the ending ?
ZrishaAdams2026-01-01 04:07
Based on real life historical events. So, we know how things will end up, just not how the author would have shown them
cookingboy2026-01-01 04:28
So isekai anime original ending it is then

Excuuuuuuuse you. I for one *love* that movie, it's the perfect amount of ridiculous.
CarioGod2026-01-02 00:59
I mean I kind of liked conquerer of shamballa, I was also very young though lmao
mulahey2026-01-01 04:08
It's based on actual historical figures...
Maxizag1232026-01-01 04:08
I dont remember if it was an article or a reddit comment but the author spoiled the ending for us in case something happens with them that makes them unable to draw anymore
AdOnly58762026-01-01 04:09
It's historical fiction that fallows Eumenes, one Alexander the Great's generals
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:28
History? What is that? Never heard of it.
AnonymousTrollLloyd2026-01-01 05:14
It's the source material for several anime. Be warned, Alexander the Great is in Fate/Zero so you'll need to be caught up on the Fate watch order before learning about History.
One_Bend74232026-01-01 09:06
Isekai has replaced the Japanese view of world history. And I don't see any problem with that.
SnooWoofers1862026-01-01 09:49
Perhaps you read or heard too much herstory… time to read the proper one. /s
flybypost2026-01-01 12:07
> Never heard of it.
Understandable, it was before your time.
Kill-bray2026-01-01 13:45
But I heard they are still making new episodes of it, right now!
flybypost2026-01-01 14:43
True, but that also takes time. It doesn't just happen like that… well… or maybe it does?
Anxious_Earth2026-01-01 14:51
But if One Piece is the longest running manga then:
"In the beginning, there was One Piece..."
thoughtlow2026-01-01 14:54
I was there 3000(~) years ago
[](#shock)
flybypost2026-01-01 15:14
Do you have the documents to prove it?
Irazidal2026-01-01 16:16
Wow, it's about Eumenes? That's a pretty deep cut, but definitely one of my favorite historical people. The Wars of the Successors are among the most overlooked historical periods IMO; Alexander himself arguably being in like the top 5 most influential human beings to ever live means his commanders and friends are overshadowed by him, but many of them were themselves also very talented larger-than-life figures, and the story of how Alexander's empire came to be divided among them is extremely interesting with loads of twists and turns.
n5050683383842026-01-02 00:35
Eumenes just like Alexander never tasted defeat and it's implied by the emperor (Alexander's "father") that Eumenes would win, if it's a war, even if he had less troops
Usual-Beyond-68312026-01-01 04:06
I was wondering what happened with the manga. I know it went on hiatus on a cliffhanger but I haven't checked in a year. I guess I'll reread Arslan and A Bride's Tale while I can.
Witty_Badger13002026-01-01 12:37
That's my hope for sure!
alucab12026-01-01 19:10
The author is the Parasyte author
Acron1xxx2026-01-02 05:55
What happened to the author? Is there absolutely no chance of him getting better, or did he die?
Maxizag1232026-01-02 06:24
Hes still alive, I think he has bad back problems but Im not sure
RGBkano2026-01-01 04:04
Oh, i really like the manga for this. Good to see some historical anime, those are rare.
nekororare2026-01-01 04:05
Isn't the manga dead?
YoloJoloHobo2026-01-01 06:50
If they get up to the manga's latest they can just go off real history anyway lol
WakandaNowAndThen2026-01-01 04:05
Holy shit this manga was goated. I remember reading it like 15 years ago, not sure how far it ever got
SSjjlex2026-01-01 04:34
if you want a spoiler for where it leaves off in terms of real world history
\[Manga Latest/Final Chapter\] >!We're left off just after the assassination of King Philip II and Olympias' plot to murder Eurydice and/or her children (I forget which one it was specifically)!<
Unfortunately we've been stuck there for about 4(?) years now, with no continuation in sight.
Kadmos12026-01-01 04:42
Alexander the Great's parents plot to murder someone? Shocking, right?
There is a region called Epirus that correspond that covers Greece and Albanian. There were various tribes there so long ago. Of note, the Molossian tribes were noted for their dogs. Molosser is the term used for many dogs and tends to include livestock guardian gods, Bulldogs, arguably Bully breeds, and Mastiff-type dogs. It seems no other type of dog (Spitz, gun dog, etc.) seems to be as hard to define as the Molosser family.
Of the ancient Molossian people wise, the two most famous were King Pyrrhus, hence Pyrrhic victory, and Queen Olympias.
\-Note: The Greek Sheepdog and the very similar Molosser tis Epirou (moh-low-sis tiz uh-pir-oh) might be among the oldest European Molosser dogs.
LocalTechpriest2026-01-01 05:08
Well that's sad.
Arguably right before the historically most interesting parts- Alexander's conquests and the fascinating shitshow after his death.
RPO7772026-01-01 07:53
It's taken progressively longer to release new volumes. We got like 1 volume a year early on, but then it became every other year. The latest volume took almost 5 years. The author's 65 and in poor health, so if we're lucky we get like 1 or 2 more volumes probably max... which probably isn't enough to get much further in the story. I think the chances we make it anywhere close to even finishing the conquest is almost zero. Heck, I think it'd take a minor miracle to make it to Gaugamela.
I kinda hope he hands it off to someone, Beserk style, but I think it's unlikely.
Sentryion2026-01-01 07:04
You are telling me it’s been 15 years and the manga still isn’t done?
ZrishaAdams2026-01-01 04:06
Ain't no way!!!
This is one of my favourite historical manga, right up there with Vinland Saga and Kingdom. Hopefully, it will find some deserved popularity with its anime adaptation. Really looking forward to it.
Also for those who don't know, the author of this series is Hitoshi Iwaaki (author of Parasyte)
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:19
Dang, I never made the connection between this and Parasyte.
I am so excited to see this one animated.
aohige_rd2026-01-01 13:47
I literally own [every manga made by Iwaaki](https://i.imgur.com/zgUG1Qy.jpeg), one of my all time favorite authors!
mcmoor2026-01-01 05:48
Damn now I just remember why I start reading this series in the first place, because of Parasyte!
RPO7772026-01-01 06:47
I cannot adequately describe how hyped I am. I hope they do like 3 Cour so they can go all the way to the latest manga volume.
PeanutButterSoda2026-01-01 21:09
So I'm not a Manga person, I loved Vinland Saga Anime. How much further does it go in the Manga, because I really want to know the rest of the story.
OneDumbBoi2026-01-01 04:09
like the manga, though wish they adapt Reiri(manga from same writer) instead, it's finished and can be done in like 24 episode and the story is so peak
tillidelete2026-01-01 19:20
Reiri is great, but I think historie is owed a adaptation first even if it wont be complete. Hopefully it does well and we get reiri later.
jlarz562026-01-01 04:09
2026 starting out good 😌
MonsterKiller1122026-01-01 04:11
I have heard it's by the author of Parasyte so I am pretty hyped. This could be the next Vinland Saga or Orb. It's great how we are getting anime based on world history more and more nowadays.
Aileos2026-01-01 04:14
They sure know how to kick off the new year. And we'll be there day one to witness another historical greatness.
dododomo2026-01-01 04:15
Let's fucking gooo! I read the manga and I loved it. Hopefully we'll get even more anime adapation of historical series
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:21
I love when they announce anime with exciting stories.
I'm not even bitter about waiting for the Vinland Saga season 3 announcement, this is just as good!
fungus9092026-01-01 04:24
Neat, that was a good manga
Hatori-Chise2026-01-01 04:25
I want to be excited about this but there’s only been maybe one or two things by Lidenfilms I thought were actually good so I’m not too hopeful.
HitsuWTG2026-01-01 06:09
They did put out a few pretty good title in the last few years specifically (Insomniacs After School, Kenshin, Bastard), so I'm actually allowing myself to be hopeful there.
Shinigami3182026-01-01 04:25
Holy shit, I remember reading this like 10 or so years ago, it is good but the release pace is so slow that I usually just forgot what was happening. Last time i heard the author unfortunately got health issue so the manga seems to be on hiatus since. Never expect it would get an adaptation.
ProfessionalRandom212026-01-01 04:27
But why secretary of Alexander but not Alexander himself?
GalahadDrei2026-01-01 04:27
Well this is a surprise to say the least considering the manga’s story is nowhere near its halfway point and never going to be finished. But since this is based on real historical events, maybe this is the only chance for the author to tell the story completely and with better visuals.
Don’t look up the main character’s wiki page if you don’t want to get spoiled.
Kadmos12026-01-01 15:48
Assuming the manga follows the actual history carefully, then we might be able to discuss the actual events without needing a tagged spoiler in the Source Material section.
mrboxeater2026-01-01 04:34
I really dislike Lindenfilms since they did the Rurouni Kenshin Remake and Goblin Slayer S2. Great manga prolly getting an "okay" adaption meh....
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:36
I liked the production values and voice acting in the Rurouni Remake though.
Sharp looking character designs at key moments (even if they didn't have much animation).
mrboxeater2026-01-01 04:46
Honestly i really disliked everything about the remake, took away the historical epic feel of the OG and turned it into a generic shounen.
I still remember them playing the upbeat pop ED music during the sad departure scene wit Kaoru crying. I swear that was directed by a robot lol
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 04:52
You're correct.
I honestly thought that Rurouni WAS a generic shounen.
That said, I liked the remake. The execution was a similar formula to what we get from JoJo or 7-Sins nowadays.
I didn't know that Kenshin was a historical epic.
Wait... Kenshin didn't have characters able to punch rocks into dust, did it?
AdNecessary76412026-01-01 06:14
>The execution was a similar formula to what we get from JoJo
???
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 06:30
Protagonists and antagonists trying and succeeding to look cool while giving speeches/monologues prior to fighting one another one on one.
Characters naming their attacks.
New enemies showing up often and being defeated shortly afterwards.
So I found Kenshin similar to JoJo (specifically parts 4 and 5) and The 7 Deadly Sins franchise.
gelatinousTurtle2026-01-01 06:15
The history is what makes Kenshin not generic. It is still 100% a battle shounen.
The early Meiji era did see some social upheaval with the abolishment of the samurai class (well, partially. Some of the bigger more important samurai clans just get converted to Kazoku, the Meiji government's attempt at creating a European style nobility), but there wasn't an epidemic of wandering ex-samurai getting into swordfights, and no one can stab their opponent in 9 different places simultaneously no matter how fast they are.
It's got enough historical flavor to separate it from other completely fantastical shounen, and the author did try to explain the more fantastical elements like Shishio's flaming sword (keyword here being TRY, I don't think the author really succeeds), which is enough for it to be more than just "generic shounen". I personally wouldn't call it a "historical epic" though. To me a historical epic is something like Ben Hur or Spartacus.
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 06:27
I agree with your definition of a historical epic.
It's a shame to hear that one can't stab their opponent in 9 different places simultaneously though.
Next you are going to tell me that people didn't cry "GATO GATO" while operating the Gatling gun (if it weren't for Kenshin, I would have never found out that it was named after a person).

Something about that guy's head being turned 90 degrees from his body and the way his face looks.. I don't know. Something about it just looks off to me, increasingly the more I look at it. I don't know why either.
SSjjlex2026-01-01 04:47
The first season desperately needs 2 cours to get to a proper finish. Would love a full adaptation, but the bare minimum would be 2 cours since \[Manga\] >!That's when the prologue finally loops back to the present day!< so I really do hope they do that.
ExocetC3I2026-01-01 04:47
For anyone who likes this series, you might also like *Thermae Romae*. Originally a manga and has an anime adaptation (as well as a live-action series, it follows an Roman *thermae* (bathhouse) architect who time travellers to various points in Japan's history to draw inspiration for is latest designs. Very much a comedy series, but the author knows her Roman history I formed by her studying and living in Italy during university.
Zer0_1Sum2026-01-01 17:14
The same author also co-wrote Plinivs, a manga about Pliny the Elder, which is awesome and also completed
Komorebi_LJP2026-01-03 04:48
Really underrated, I think it actually won or at least was nominated for some prizes in Japan.
But serious the audience for this has to be the epitome of niche! Not that I am complaining!
If there is any historical themed manga I wish got an adaptation it was Ad Astra though
Oberhard2026-01-01 04:58
This literal my childhood manga its bringing me joy but manga update so slow beating HxH and Berserk release record
wolfvector2026-01-01 04:59
I remember reading this. Good to finally have an anime of it.
North5142026-01-01 05:02
Wow, it's kinda amazing, anytime I think a work should get a remake or adaption, it now apparently happens..as much as the overproduction side sucks in the industry we do get a lot of great works confirmed for adaptions these days.
irrumado2026-01-01 05:05
I read this manga in the last 4 days, it's awesome and I'm thrilled for this, but I don't like most adaptions
Lola_PopBBae2026-01-01 05:06
Dope!! Hope this gets a real good dub
ReinhardLoen2026-01-01 05:09
This is something I wasn't expecting.
As stated in the other comments, this is made by the same creator of Parasyte. What most people might not know is that while the creator is mostly known for that work, he's done a lot of historical manga, Historie being the most notable of them.
It's been going on for 20+ years now, but the author is getting old and has been running into health problems, so not that many volumes have actually been produced (around 12, so far). It's actually in its final stages, but how long that will take to wrap up is unknown.
It's great. There are historical inaccuracies here and there, but that doesn't ruin the work. It's still very enjoyable.
He's hoping the adaptation is good.
FarCritical2026-01-01 05:17
If this is anything like Vinland Saga and Orb, I'm so down
abandoned_idol2026-01-01 07:41

HOLYYYY
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MANGA OF ALL TIME!!!!
A historical fiction story by the author is parasyte. It's incredible. Unfortunately it's been on an indefinite hiatus for a few years now. There is a healthy amount of content and the art and plot get INSAAANE
the_48thRonin2026-01-01 06:28
Is this for real? Holy fuck.
Vinon2026-01-01 06:29
Oh, I literally just binged the whole thing. It starts off really strong, but sadly imo it kinda gets weaker afte the 40~ chapter mark.

RyviusRan2026-01-01 07:05
Not sure how they will end it. I know it is very loosely based on history, but the manga never was finished.
The teaser visual already does a great job of setting the tone. The scale of the city, the calm atmosphere, and the solitary figure really sell the idea of a historical journey rather than a fast-paced action story. Curious to see how the anime handles its sense of time and perspective.
entelechtual2026-01-01 10:01
Yeah saw that coming.
Syokhan2026-01-01 10:19
Oh, historical fiction? That sounds super interesting! Kinda bummed to learn that the manga is not done, but since it follows an actual historical figure there's always real history for knowing how it ends :p
nhansieu12026-01-01 10:47
that looks so good

wtf never expected this especially with the manga being in hiatus for so long?? holy peak

Nice to see it announced. Knew it was coming because of the leaks.
Hopefully this could potentially go anime-original or in collab with the author to make a good ending once it surpasses the manga content because the likelihood of the manga ever finishing is low unfortunately
aeshma52026-01-01 14:20
Oh. Wow wow, so excited. Yes!

A historical epic set in ancient times, Historie tells the story of Eumenes, a young man with quick wits and a vast destiny to fulfill. In time, he’ll become a famed army commander and personal secretary to Alexander the Great—but the road to this glory is fraught with danger…

If we get a 2nd cour it might get rough, but smart directing and reworking can alleviate some production shortcomings I think.
Its not until a hypothetical cour 4+ where you really need good production to pull off what happens.
Praying for a good adaptation for this. Visual looks good at least.

Afternoon has been known for being the publication that balances artistic quality with commercialism.
But anime adaptations of Afternoon comics have been sketchy because it’s an imprint of Kodansha (known for questionable adaptations of their material)
It's pretty old at this point. Think ended around 2008, but you never know. Maybe we'll get an adaptation at some point, but I think the material is just too heavy for many.
Honest to god "that's all I need to read"
I freaking love Parasyte, even read the manga while watching the anime again during a rewatch I organized a goddamn eternity ago, looking forward to this one!
It is incredible!!!
I am so excited. Holy crap, I thought this would never het adapted.
Ho my gosh. Jesus. History and plots, yes!!!
Understandable, it was before your time.
"In the beginning, there was One Piece..."

Arguably right before the historically most interesting parts- Alexander's conquests and the fascinating shitshow after his death.
I kinda hope he hands it off to someone, Beserk style, but I think it's unlikely.
I am so excited to see this one animated.
I'm not even bitter about waiting for the Vinland Saga season 3 announcement, this is just as good!
Don’t look up the main character’s wiki page if you don’t want to get spoiled.
Sharp looking character designs at key moments (even if they didn't have much animation).
I still remember them playing the upbeat pop ED music during the sad departure scene wit Kaoru crying. I swear that was directed by a robot lol
???
Characters naming their attacks.
New enemies showing up often and being defeated shortly afterwards.
So I found Kenshin similar to JoJo (specifically parts 4 and 5) and The 7 Deadly Sins franchise.
It's a shame to hear that one can't stab their opponent in 9 different places simultaneously though.
Next you are going to tell me that people didn't cry "GATO GATO" while operating the Gatling gun (if it weren't for Kenshin, I would have never found out that it was named after a person).

But serious the audience for this has to be the epitome of niche! Not that I am complaining!
If there is any historical themed manga I wish got an adaptation it was Ad Astra though
I've read the manga it's so good lol
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MANGA OF ALL TIME!!!!
A historical fiction story by the author is parasyte. It's incredible. Unfortunately it's been on an indefinite hiatus for a few years now. There is a healthy amount of content and the art and plot get INSAAANE
I'm crying
Hopefully this could potentially go anime-original or in collab with the author to make a good ending once it surpasses the manga content because the likelihood of the manga ever finishing is low unfortunately
