Intellectual or emotional anime

I think the easiest way to describe my taste is that I like something that's mentally challenging or emotionally deep with an effect of catharsis. Something about the world and life. More serious than light. More art than entertainment. For example my favourite anime is Death Parade.

I didn't like Death Parade, but reading your post I'd like to recommend March Comes In Like A Lion (or Sangatsu no Lion).

When I read the synopsis I thought it seemed like a serious, realistic and grounded anime with real life problems that everyone can relate to in some way. I was far from expecting it to hit so hard. I learned a lot and it helped me a lot. Bonus: Studio Shaft did a great, great job visually.

I dunno if you've watched it, but Neon Genesis Evangelion. A LOT of deep themes and emotionally/mentally challenging themes throughout the entire series and especially in the finale: End of Evangelion.
