Late 30s gal recently into anime - Recommendations?
Hello, just looking for advice. Some background: Growing up, I would watch some shows with my brother passively, not really fully into it. I was a Hey Arnold! fan through and through, and something about anime never really interested me. I did have a fascination with the Japanese language, but learned it via other media/sources. I can now follow Japanese fairly okay and noticed I understood a lot of *Dandadan* (which I clicked on by accident last year on my Netflix!). I got hooked, but I think what got me was a weird "Hey Arnold" vibe from the main characters, plus the added bonus of the Japanese learning source. I'm finding myself wanting to explore more anime with a good romance plot. Also, for those who speak Japanese, I'd love to know of any anime that uses more "natural" or "real-life" Japanese? Anything is fine, though! And manga is okay too!
I'm limited to Netflix for now. :(

I'm watching the end of Season 3 right now. I actually put it off because I just didn't want it to end, but now that there's a new season, I can finally get caught up.

Nope, just double-checked, they still only have one.

Ouran High School Host Club (classic 2000s anime)
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Not my typical genre, but damn it's good!
According to many users on this subreddit, Dandadan should never be watched by newbies! (Every single time I recommend it to a new viewer I get flamed over it). "It's too weird and icky!~ it's too craaaazzyyyy for newbies!"
Unprompted drama and lost credibility aside. (grr)
I'll just guess that you are looking for engaging characters, no objectification, and female characters with agency/personality (these are so popular). Write all of these down (and there's even more as well).
1). Apothecary Diaries. Smart female doctor/detective.
2). Dungeon Meshi. Features Marcille, one of the two legendary anime elves (if anyone claims there are more, be skeptical).
3). Frieren is the second elf. She's a riot (funny).
4). Ascendance of a Bookworm. Womanwho loves books is reborn in a fantasy world and networks her way into re-creating accessible print/books/reading.
5). Spice and Wolf. Male and female heroes travel, banter, and barter around a pseudo-fantasy dark ages Europe. Merchant (make) and a pagan god wolf (female).
6). Shadow House is amazing for the particularly patient viewer. Large amount of charismatic heroes, char dev, smart heroine, puzzles and mystery.
7). Medalist. Oh, I just love Medalist so much! Watch the first episode if you want to fall in love with the two heroes.
Welcome to our weeaboo ranks, soldier. I fell for this medium when I first heard about it (my first exposure was "Haruhi").
I imagine that some people will recommend you shows that cater to male viewers at the expense of female viewers (not as much representation), so make sure to learn your preferences and dislikes for future recommendations. There's tons of good stuff hidden amongst the garbage (Dandadan isn't the exception, it's the norm).
There's also the "Shoujo" (women) demographic shows, I'm ignorant of that one, so try researching it. e.g. Ore Monogatari, A star Brighter than the Sun are two that I personally liked.
Don't touch "Mushoku Tensei" if you are not a fan of sexual assault/harassment. We even have creepy anime! I'm not kidding. Any "coming of age/redemption" claims are just smokescreens. Aside from that, it's a harem/power fantasy.
Because a lot of "progressive" people online are out of touch with reality.
Game of Thrones had much worse in it's first episode, but it ended up being one of the most watched shows of all time (on a global scale) while it was airing!
Obviously, DanDanDan will be triggering to some people, so you will want to recommend it with caveats, but at the end of the day, it's one of the most popular shows from last year.
Monster and Pluto are both series aimed at an adult audience, and while not necessarily realistic (Pluto is an extended riff on Astro Boy!) they're both pretty grounded. Not the lightest viewing, though.
Setting aside that factor, since you'd be a better judge of the language than me:
Seconding and thirding and fourthing the Delicious in Dungeon rec. The manga is one of my all-time favorites and the adaptation is fantastic. No romance to speak of, but fantastic worldbuilding.
Same goes for Frieren (classic high fantasy series, romance is very low-key) and Apothecary Diaries (historical mystery series with a fantastic female lead and a very slow-burn romance.)
Ranma 1/2 is on Netflix and it's a new adaptation of an absolutely classic romcom. The original manga ran from the 80s to mid-90s, and was adapted into an anime back then. I'm mentioning it mostly because it *feels* a lot like Dandadan to me, with the mix of unhinged action, humor, romance, and the supernatural (though with more emphasis on humor, and less on romance) but also because the association between the two series is permanently seared into my brain after Jiji made an *epic* callback to the first anime series when he was learning about the hot-and-cold-water thing.
Clannad and Clannad After Story
Nadia the Secret of Blue Water (unless things changed drastically, avoid the officials. The dub was horrendous and the sub script abysmal)
Princess Tutu
Dennou Coil
Uninhabited Planet: Survive
No Need for Tenchi. (Just the original OVA, I don’t know anything about what came later)
Vision of Escaflowne
El-Hazard
Surely you've probably heard of Makoto Shinkai and his movie your name.
Mamoru Hosoda is also usually a safe bet. He's been slightly on a downward slope I think ever since the 2010s but his movies are still OK generally speaking, from what I've seen.
Can't forget Satoshi Kon's work either. It's not the most fun watches, but they're great movies. Maybe Tokyo Godfathers is his most lighthearted movie.
As for TV series, I can't konw for sure what kind of stuff you'd like. I barely remember anything about Hey Arnold lmao. Maybe er... Idk, try some slice of life stuff ? Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Joshiraku, Non Non Biyori, Yuru Camp.
Way of the Househusband is on Netflix. Basically a former mob boss becomes a house husband. LOTS of conversational Japanese since he does a lot of basic tasks. Not the best animation since it's a gag anime, think of it like a moving comic. But he loves his wife very much and it's pretty funny and sweet.
Thermae Romae Novae is a Netflix exclusive, not really romantic but VERY calming and highly recommend if it's cold where you are. Basically it's from the perspective of a guy who works on Roman bathhouses who finds himself in a magic portal where he goes to Japan and learns about Japanese bath houses. Teaches a LOT of history and will weirdly have you appreciate every obligatory public bath episode most anime throw in for fan service reasons.
Ooku The Inner Chambers is a Netflix exclusive anime (at least in the US) that's not talked about enough, kind of an alternate history where a lot of the men die out and get treated as sex slaves. There's a lot of romance subplots but it definitely fits the "learning about Japan" criteria since it is largely based on the Edo period.
If you end up liking it, then Netflix also has "Orb: On the Movements of the Earth" by the same author.

**A Place Further Than the Universe** \- grounded, real-life adventure about four girls who save up and travel to Antarctica. Genuine adventure that I recommend to everyone looking for inspiration, motivation, and fun entertainment. You will laugh and you will cry.
**Frieren: Beyond Journey's End** \- A fantasy, slow-paced adventure about an overpowered and eccentric elf that out-lived her adventuring party and finds a new family for a new adventure, promising her elderly friends and herself to perhaps do things differently this time. Already regarded as a timeless classic despite it's recent airing. Fantastic characters and relationship building, and great world building.
**FLCL** \- If you liked Dandadan, you might really like this short, weird series that embraces it's animation medium and the limitless scope of anime as an art form. Kind of an anime staple that never let's you forget, "Anime can get weird."
**Violet Evergarden** \- An animation masterpiece with music and setting to boot. Set in a analog of post-WWI Europe, an emotionless duty-bound former female soldier with no social skills learns to live, feel and love after losing both her arms and the love of her life, and , eventually excelling as an "auto-memory" girl, a profession that writes letters for people who can't read. If Episode 10 doesn't make you cry, you're a monster.
**Tsukigakirei** \- A very grounded and very relatable teenage romance featuring some of the most even-handed character and plot for a "school" anime. Very satisfying ending, this anime hits the romance sweet spot without falling into common tropes.
**Apothecary Diaries** \- A pseudo-historical fiction set in an analog of 16(17th?)-century China and the political and dramatic intrigue of the rear palace of the Imperial city, as much soap opera as it is serial storytelling. Maomao, the young female protagonist, is a gifted apothecary kidnapped and forced to work in the rear palace, quickly being recognized as a singular talent in solving medical and intrigue mysteries. Throughout her enslavement, her obsession with medicine and nature and complete ambivalence about her station neuters any attempt to keep her down. Fun, mysterious, and exciting all at the same time, with just enough romance thrown in to ensure there is something for everyone.
**Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name)** \- A fantastic movie about a fantastical romance that involves body swapping and other fantastical *edge of your seat and anxiety-causing* shenanigans. A surefire weeper with very likable main characters that you can't help but root for the entire time.
**Made in Abyss** \- For a truly dark and mysterious fantasy adventure, this anime is probably the gold standard at the moment. Some of the most incredible world-building and setting in any anime, the story follows the optimistic and obsessed Riko and the dependable and loyal Reg, and eventually a small band of other characters as they traverse the Abyss, a cursed cavern on an island in the middle of the ocean that incurs severe consequences for anyone who attempts to explore it's depths. The adventure is awe-inspiring and the horrific turns the story takes might keep you up at night. It pulls no punches and no child is safe. Consists of a season 1, then a movie, then season 2, and movie 2 comes out this year. Perhaps the best soundtrack in all of anime. This one is not really in line with your other interests, but I recommend it anyway, as it will spoil the mediocrity of a lot of media.
**Kaguya-sama: Love Is War** \- Hilarious dialogue-heavy story about two student council reps at a prestigious Tokyo school who are stupid for each other but refuse to admit it, constantly engaging in a battle of wits to get each other to confess. This anime does a great job of not letting the trope get stale by slowly and regularly giving the fantastically-written side characters more and more of the spotlight so you find yourself rooting for everyone. This is by far one of the most fun and laugh-a-minute comedies in anime, and highly recommended. I think this one has three seasons, and at least one movie.
Now this is the important part.
Watch the worst on your list and work your way to the best.
You don’t want to have a fine dinner first and then go to bologna sandwiches.
It will make it harder for you to enjoy.
I also personally recommend watching "In This Small Corner of The World" it's a movie about a Japanese girl living during WW2.
This is comedy genre and not romance but this is exceptionally well written. If you have an interest in Japanese language, you might catch the jokes in a way the show writers intended. I promise you'll literally laugh out loud through and through.
I 10000% recommend Kaguya-sama and fragrant flowers though and I’m a late 30s dude. If you want a movie then start with Your Name and see if it scratches the itch.
Delicious In Dungeon.
Apocethary Diaries.
Skip and Loafer.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventures (it is good from season 2).
Your lie in April

Comedic but "grounded":
Lucky star
Nichijou
Spy x Family
Frieren Beyond Journey’s End!!
Call of the Night (i think season 1 is on netflix)
but if you do also end up getting crunchyroll the. i’d also recommend
Rock is a Ladies Modesty
Aggretsuko - slice of life for working gals especially if you have a corporate office job.
Nana - my all time favorite. Grew up with it, but the life lessons hit different as I age and go back to it. Paradise Kiss by the same author is another great series that as an anime adaptation.
B Gata H Kei - a raunchy teenage romcom. But its a throwback to being an over emotional teen and all the drama that brings. Also just comedic gold.
Fruits Basket - it's a romance /shojo but also very slice of life and just an A tier anime. You will have feelings.
Yona of the Dawn - historical fiction, and just amazing story and romance overall. Solid world building and a second season has been announced so I feel good recommending it.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous - A young widow and a possible secend chance at love if her ex's ghost will stop haunting her.
Some others: Yakuza Fiance, Pricess Jellyfish, Wave Listen to me, Peach girl, Death Parade, Clannad and Clannad After story, My Happy Marriage, Michiko to Hatchin, A lull in the sea
