Kids and I watching Blue Eyed Samuri, suggestions?

None of us are knowledgeable on Anime. I went through a short period many years ago that I watched some (Cowboy B, Full metal, D note) and loved it. But they haven't at all outside of this one show (at my daughter's suggestion). So I was curious what you guys could recommend if we liked this show? Preferably on Netflix, or Prime. They are older (23/18), so although sometimes awkward, PG isnt required.

Note: I forgot my daughter is a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki, but she is limited to his films.

I've never heard of Blue Samurai. Is it a new anime?

That said, I think that "Dungeon Meshi" and "Frieren" are worth looking at.

Both are fantasy adventures with fun comic relief and mature adult characters.

Thank you I will look them up! Blue Samurai is on Netflix, and was renewed for a second season. It was good IMO, but im not well versed in this genre.

Blue Eye Samurai is not a Japanese anime. It is a Western animated TV series (inspired by Japanese culture) originally produced in English. Though there is a Japanese dub for the series.

My daughter has seen all of the Gibli, we even went to the movies to see some. I was surprised she liked this show so much. I know its kind of vague to ask, but anything really "good" we can stream.

Oh... we noticed... lol. My son quickly skipped the first scene, then it was like... my god... wth during the jumping into the lake. We had an open discussion as to WHY artists do what they do.

It's good that you are educating your kids! Some anime is questionable and you will definitely see that some angles are completely unnecessary. But its definitely good that you are having an open discussion.

I appreciate that, I get some criticism now and then. Not to play "woe is me", but mom has severe schizophrenia, so I try to spend as much time with them as I can. Adult material is the least of our worries these days.

BLAME! on Netflix is a very good anime action movie. Also good plot and good world building.

IDK if Erased is on netflix, but if not watch the live action, its arguably better than the anime. Erased is nothing groundbreaking, but everyone likes it, and the ones who say otherwise are just lying.

Frieven (netflix) - slow for the 1st 5 (but still good) but one of the best ever.

It’s hard to give good recommendations without knowing what other kinds of media you and your kids enjoy together.

Anime, like every other type of media, has multiple different genres.

Are you in to Sci-fi, traditional fantasy, action, comedies, horror, mystery, sports, romcoms?

Also, how much gore or nudity are you comfortable with?

Using just blue eye samurai as a base is going to limit recommendations (like most suggestions so far have just been other anime featuring samurai.) and exclude shows you might really enjoy despite a completely different setting and vibe.

Anything but sports, and romcons. Both of then do like humor, even if its darker. Sex wise, my son usually quickly skips it, but its not a devastating situation, just can be awkward. I mean... they are "adults", so whatever. I know its a vague question to ask. I just dont know about much out there, and we are running out of things to watch. We like to spend each evening watching something together, so I will give most things a chance.

Dungeon Meshi is a much more light hearted fantasy romp with comedy elements, although the plot does get more high stakes as it goes on. It’s a solid and well animated show.

Similarly, Frieren is a fantasy show that’s a little more slow paced and focuses more on the relationships between the characters and the world building than the combat. (But the combat is really well done.)

Then there’s Apothecary Diaries, which is more mystery/suspense with a strong and well written female lead as she solves various puzzles and essentially police investigations. There are very light romance elements but not by any means the focus of the show.

You might also enjoy Parasyte, which is a horror + action, it’s got a lot more gore than anything been suggested so far but it’s a highly praised show as well.

Attack on Titan is another highly rated dark fantasy, with action horror and some political intrigue. Heads up that it is also pretty gorey, the titular Titans are essentially man-eating giants and it does not shy away from death scenes.

Then there are shows like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and Kaiju No. 8 which, while they are action shows primarily aimed at young men/teenage boys, have pretty great overall plots, interesting characters, well animated scenes and are generally pretty highly regarded.

Blue Eye Samurai is an American and French produced show. If we're going by the definition that anime is animation from Japan, then it isn't one.

Aside from Frieren, I would recommend Iron Blooded Orphans. It’s on the serious side and a mecha anime with politics but still digestible. I wouldn’t worry about the fact it’s part of a larger franchise (Gundam) as it can be viewed on its own.
