Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the I My Me! Strawberry Eggs 25th anniversary rewatch!
^Just ^ignore ^the ^25th ^anniversary ^is ^in ^July...
Crossdressing and comedy. It has a long, storied history.
Nowadays, crossdressing in comedy is considered insensitive with accusations of it being transphobic and borderline homophobic. And while there is probably some truth to that, the reality is a lot of times it's played with sincerity.
Some Like It Hot and Tootsie are two of the greatest comedies of all time. Mrs. Doubtfire is considered iconic and a defining part of Robin Williams legacy. All three movies play the crossdressing up for laughs but there's quite sincerity about it to where the joke isn't just "Lol, it's a guy dressed as a woman". And I think that sincerity applies to I My Me! Strawberry Eggs.
Strawberry Eggs, which is how I'll be referring to it going forward, is very much a product of its time. It has that wacky slapstick type of humor common in anime at the time, like with shows such as Ranma and Love Hina. It also has a lot of heart that I think makes it a show worth revisiting.
This is easily the most obscure show I've ever hosted. I hope with this rewatch I can introduce people to this series that have never seen it before so they can become fans of it just like me. It's been over two years since I last saw the show, so will my memory hold up or will it prove to be an outdated relic best forgotten to time? Let's find out!
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I'm watching the dub, by the way.
You ever think dogs look at us like they're in control?
A store
An alarm
Month's rent due
An old grandma
And she has a gun
She is awesome
The new boy
And he puts a dog as a decoy
I like the OP. Pretty catchy and also a bit of a bop.
Guy on a fence
He wants to be a teacher
Some guys we don't know
One girl has a crush
A can
And she goes after it
Some boy catches it
Fukae. That's his name.
Two other girls
Fuko is the can girl and Fujio is the tomboy.
I like Fujio already
A lot of F's around here, too bad I have none to give.
Suddenly, Fuko crashes in a trash can.
Granny eating
The guy from earlier is back
Hibiki Amawa. That's his name.
Graduated from University this Spring with a physical education certificate.
He is all about keeping fit [](#mugistronk)
These people are weird lol
Granny still wanting the rent
Unfortunately, he has no money
And so she takes the dog's food
Hibiki vows to get a job real soon.
At the junior high nearby
"He's got his work cut out for him."
Miho talking about her imaginary boyfriend. Uh, boyfriend, sorry.
Fuko seems embarrassed
Miho talking about how wonderful true love is.
Talking about Fuko finding her true love someday.
A girl named Seiko
And she's embarrassed by the naked magazine guy.
She can't handle stuff like that.
Hibiki in the principal's office
He wants a job as a gym teacher
"It is our policy at this institution not to hire any male teachers."
The principal seems to be really against the male species.
Says nothing good comes from men
Hibiki remaining incredulous
Granny explaining the situation to him.
But Hibiki is not giving up
He wants to prove that men are capable of being loving God just like women are.
Granny seems doubtful, but she's willing to help.
That's one big room
Gotta make sure he looks nicely.
I really like the landlord lady. The perfect mix of crazy and considerate.
Montage time
Hibiki walking in high heels
A voice converter, from granny's days as an electronics expert.
Granny is full of surprises
Costume time
Hibiki actually looks pretty good as a woman.
Would
And yes, she gets the job as gym teacher. You see to love it.
Girls changing now
Fuko got chosen for something
Boy, she sure is clumsy
God, Hibiki is killing it in that outfit.
Principal imposing restrictive gym clothes to avoid male gazing.
That is a pretty long skirt
The vice principal looks pretty
Gotta get Fuko to run 50 meters without falling down.
What is Fuko, QWOP?
And immediately, she trips
This is embarrassing
Hibiki trying to help her
Hibiki really excited he's getting to teach, which I find to be really wholesome.
Unfortunately, Fuko falls. Over and over.
Hibiki telling Fuko something
And this gets her to blush
Fuko is making her skirt short
And this makes her a better runner
Love the music here, by the way.
Fuko jumps in Hibiki's arms
Hibiki is so proud of her
Well, I'd say Hibiki earned his keep.
And what did Hibiki tell Fuko?
"You'll be just fine."
What a sweet sentiment
Fuko's heart racing
Even though Fuko thinks Hibiki is a woman, she wonders if she may have feelings for her.
Lol, Hibiki asking an advance on her salary.
Granny casually threatening the dog if Hibiki doesn't pay his share of the rent in time.
Outro is good. It has this earworm feel to it that sticks in your head. I like the changing outfits Fuko is wearing as the song plays.
I might like the outro more than the intro, and I like the intro quite a bit.
Overall, this is a very effective first episode. We explain why Hibiki has to be a woman, and we establish Fuko falling for her. The landlord granny is a fun character that adds a lot of personality to the show. Also, the principal hating men instantly creates this conflict for our main character.
This was a very good episode. It set everything up and had a lot of charm to it. I like the sincerity with which Hibiki has in helping people. I think it easily makes him someone you can root for.
Try to find things that fit me
> What do you imagine would be the hardest thing to get used to as the opposite gender?
I imagine probably the time of the month
>
> Nowadays, crossdressing in comedy is considered insensitive with accusations of it being transphobic and borderline homophobic. And while there is probably some truth to that, the reality is a lot of times it's played with sincerity.
Really sums up modern society. Can't joke or make fun of anything, everything is offensive.
>Strawberry Eggs, which is how I'll be referring to it going forward, is very much a product of its time. It has that wacky slapstick type of humor common in anime at the time, like with shows such as Ranma and Love Hina. It also has a lot of heart that I think makes it a show worth revisiting.
I seriously miss these wacky anime. I haven't watched the original Ranma, but I watched the remake, and I've also watched Lova Hina for the first time this year, very fun shows, very different from today's comedy.
I hadn't heard about it before you announced the rewatch, but man, 2 years is not that long!
>I might like the outro more than the intro, and I like the intro quite a bit.
I'm gonna have to listen to it more closely tomorrow, but I think I preferred the OP.
> This was a very good episode. It set everything up and had a lot of charm to it. I like the sincerity with which Hibiki has in helping people. I think it easily makes him someone you can root for.
Was kind of expecting him to be a sleazeball lol, seems like he's a good dude, though. Or maybe not, depending on how the romance situation resolves itself.
I mean, there is some merit to the accusations I feel like. But here, it's not like coming at the expense of anyone.
>I seriously miss these wacky anime. I haven't watched the original Ranma, but I watched the remake, and I've also watched Lova Hina for the first time this year, very fun shows, very different from today's comedy.
I highly recommend My Tiny Senpai if you want a nice throwback anime.
>I hadn't heard about it before you announced the rewatch, but man, 2 years is not that long!
I first watched this show in I want to say 2014. I own all the DVDs, so it clearly left an impression on me.
>I'm gonna have to listen to it more closely tomorrow, but I think I preferred the OP.
That's fair. It has a nice coming of age vibe to it.
Sometimes, but definitely not always. People say How I Met Your Mother hasn't aged well because of how Barney's character treats women, and it makes me scratch my head. Barney is a very fun character, but he was always seen as a huge asshole, not someone to look up to.
>I highly recommend My Tiny Senpai if you want a nice throwback anime.
Pretty sure I've watched that one, my memory is foggy, but I don't recall it being that wacky though...
>I first watched this show in I want to say 2014. I own all the DVDs, so it clearly left an impression on me.
Do you actually watch stuff on DVD? I feel like those have gone extinct before 2014!
Or like how in Faulty Towers Major drops the N word in one scene. The point of the character is that he's ignorant and old.
>Pretty sure I've watched that one, my memory is foggy, but I don't recall it being that wacky though...
It had a quirky vibe to it at least
>Do you actually watch stuff on DVD? I feel like those have gone extinct before 2014!
No, but I do still collect. I recently was at an FYE and bought some DVD volumes of L/R: Licensed by Royalty and Last Exile.
Not familiar with that one, but yeah, sounds like it wouldn't be a problem if the character is portrayed negatively.
>No, but I do still collect. I recently was at an FYE and bought some DVD volumes of L/R: Licensed by Royalty and Last Exile.
I have no idea what FYE or L/R means!
He's definitely portrayed as the one in the wrong.
>I have no idea what FYE or L/R means!
FYE stands for For Your Entertainment. L/R stands for... License/Royalty :P
Well, so far it's pretty one-sided. I don't even think Hibiki realizes Fuko feels a certain way about him. But it's going to be interesting to see what happens when he does.
The drama seems to be more Fuko might be smitten by a woman when really the bigger issue is the age difference. But a lot of teenagers have crushes on their teachers, so what can you do?
>The drama seems to be more Fuko might be smitten by a woman when really the bigger issue is the age difference. But a lot of teenagers have crushes on their teachers, so what can you do?
Yeah definitely nothing wrong with it as long as it's one sided, but I somehow have doubts it'll stay that way.
Not that I particularly care, I'm pretty good at separating anime from real life. It would be weird if it was live action, but in an anime I don't particularly mind it lol.
I guess we'll see
>Not that I particularly care, I'm pretty good at separating anime from real life. It would be weird if it was live action, but in an anime I don't particularly mind it lol.
I think it depends on how it's done. There's a right way and a wrong way I feel like.
The dub is a very fascinating product of its time. It leaves some Japanese terms untranslataed (gym kyoshi instead of gym teacher) but other times it does things like change a reference to manzai comedy to a reference to Abbott and Costello.
I've been switching back and forth between sub and dub as I've been watching so I can compare and contrast the way it translates various things.
I watched the dub because it was more easily accessible. I've never seen the sub before but that's mainly because it's really hard to come by. I suppose I could bust out my DVDs, but I'm lazy, so...
The first episode was pretty good, and I like the old-style animation. It was funny, especially when Fuko was finally able to run the 50m without falling.

1. I work from home, so I would do what I always do and just type away at my keyboard!
2. Periods. Knowing myself, I'd be terrible at dealing with them. I'd probably never be prepared. Thank the lord for no male menstruation!
On to the episode!
First timer, coming into this mostly blind, all I know is that the MC is crossdressing for some unknown reason!
Good start with the Solar Flare against Orochimaru, which in turn shoots the guy (whom I had assumed was the MC) in the ass with a rubber bullet. Definitely in for a wild ride.
Getting plenty of pantyshots early into the first episode, is it me or that doesn't happen nearly as often these days?
So it appears the school director is one of those "feminists".
Didn't expect the crossdressing idea to come out of old lady Orochimaru. I do wonder why the main guy needed to wear women's panties, but I'll keep that question to myself. Of course Orochimaru is an engineer/mad scientist.
Yeah the director is batshit insane, making kids wear long skirts for PE is definitely a choice.
One episode in and the poor kid already thinks she's lesbian lol.
That was a fun first episode, classic nonsense early 2000s rom-com vibes, which I dearly miss.
On the internet, no one knows you're a ~~cat~~ crossdresser.
> 2. Periods. Knowing myself, I'd be terrible at dealing with them. I'd probably never be prepared. Thank the lord for no male menstruation!
As someone who experienced half a dozen kidney stones, that's like the male equivalent of a period [](#ptsd)
>Good start with the Solar Flare against Orochimaru, which in turn shoots the guy (whom I had assumed was the MC) in the ass with a rubber bullet. Definitely in for a wild ride.
Quite the way to start the episode lol
>Getting plenty of pantyshots early into the first episode, is it me or that doesn't happen nearly as often these days?
Honestly, I must've had my blinders on. I don't remember any panty shots.
>So it appears the school director is one of those "feminists".
She definitely browses Kotaku
>Didn't expect the crossdressing idea to come out of old lady Orochimaru. I do wonder why the main guy needed to wear women's panties, but I'll keep that question to myself. Of course Orochimaru is an engineer/mad scientist.
Why not?
I think the idea is if you're going to dress up like a woman, why not go all out?
>Yeah the director is batshit insane, making kids wear long skirts for PE is definitely a choice.
That just seems so counterproductive. Like, what is this, the 1910s?
>That was a fun first episode, classic nonsense early 2000s rom-com vibes, which I dearly miss.
Yeah, I liked this as an introductory episode. It was quirky and Hibiki makes for a likable protagonist.
**Edit**: Had to combine something because one of the other comments got nuked. That's why the thread kinda looks like a mess.
Fortunately for me, I don't know that pain.
[](#towel)
First one is when the main girl falls over the trash, there was another one with her while she's running, I think it was after she made it to the finish line.
>Why not?
>I think the idea is if you're going to dress up like a woman, why not go all out?
Can't say I've ever wore women's panties before but... Can't imagine they're very comfortable... Can they even hold the goods?!
>That just seems so counterproductive. Like, what is this, the 1910s?
Were girls even allowed to have PE then? Was there even PE in school? Hell, were girls allowed in school?!
>Yeah, I liked this as an introductory episode. It was quirky and Hibiki makes for a likable protagonist.
We'll see for how long!
But that in my opinion is less fanservice and more to put over her being ditzy.
>Can't say I've ever wore women's panties before but... Can't imagine they're very comfortable... Can they even hold the goods?!
Maybe if you try hard enough :P
>Were girls even allowed to have PE then? Was there even PE in school? Hell, were girls allowed in school?!
Women's suffrage was like 1920s. I think girls were allowed in school before that.
>We'll see for how long!
Eh, I have more faith in him than you do.
A pantyshot is a pantyshot!
>Maybe if you try hard enough :P
That's gonna be a pass.
>Women's suffrage was like 1920s. I think girls were allowed in school before that.
Apparently in Japan, 1872 is when they began attending public schools, huh.
>Eh, I have more faith in him than you do.
You've already watched it! So maybe you're gaslighting me...
This isn't like Najica Blitz Tactics lol
>That's gonna be a pass.
Fair enough
>Apparently in Japan, 1872 is when they began attending public schools, huh.
The more you know
>You've already watched it! So maybe you're gaslighting me...
Who's to say I'm not? [](#urbansmile)

Which is kinda crazy for a show from the 2000s. Early 2000s, no less. Yeah, Utena was already a thing, but most animes didn't address the topic of homosexuality at the time.
I guess Familiar of Zero might be obscure. It used to be really popular but now not so much. Most people nowadays probably know it as the series that inspired Re:Zero.
I've actually been meaning to watch it, but I don't know if I can commit to such a long rewarch... I like replying to all the comments to actually get a conversation going, but I don't have enough free time to commit nearly 2 months :(
Also, Louise is quite the... acquired taste lol
If I can make a suggestion, I normally prewatch all my rewatches ahead of time and write down my thoughts as I watch them. Maybe you can do the same.

Seems like a good enough dude, for now.
>What are your thoughts on the landlord lady?
Probably my favorite character for now, love those eccentric characters.
>What are your thoughts on Hibiki having to pay the rent that's due?
Capitalism ho!!
>Thoughts on the OP and the ED?
Gonna have to give it a better listen tomorrow, but I enjoyed the OP at the very least.
>Thoughts on Fuko who seems rather clumsy?
Love that trope lol
>Thoughts on Hibiki having aspirations to be a teacher?
Good for him! Or maybe not, because of the whole having to crossdress thing.
>What are your thoughts on the school principal not letting Hibiki be a teacher at the school she runs because he's a man and she thinks men are barbarians?
I feel like I've seen her on YouTube, the modern feminist.
>What are your thoughts on the premise of the show which is Hibiki has to pose as a female in order to get a teaching job so he can pay his rent?
Not exactly something innovative, but depending on how it plays out, it could be very fun!
>What are your thoughts on landlord lady helping Hibiki look like a woman?
Like I said earlier, wasn't expecting that lol
>What are your thoughts on landlord lady giving Hibiki a voice modifier from her days as an electronics expert?
Not surprising, seeing as the VA plays Orochimaru, which was a sort of mad scientist too (I think?)
>What are your thoughts on Hibiki getting the job as the gym teacher?
I'm proud of him, always knew he could do it!
>Thoughts on the principal imposing restrictive gym clothes to avoid male gazing?
Batshit insane lol
>Thoughts on Hibiki helping Fuko by shortening her skirt, which makes her run better?
Did he really help her? Didn't he just say "You can do it!"?
>What are your thoughts on even though Fuko thinks Hibiki is a woman, she wonders if she may have feelings for her?
The poor girl. It's probably gonna turn out to be very funny though!
Hmm
>Probably my favorite character for now, love those eccentric characters.
And she seemingly is supportive of Hibiki.
>Capitalism ho!!
Very much so
>Gonna have to give it a better listen tomorrow, but I enjoyed the OP at the very least.
It's very catchy
>Love that trope lol
Makes me think of Taiga from Toradora a bit.
>Good for him! Or maybe not, because of the whole having to crossdress thing.
It's out of necessity, tho
>I feel like I've seen her on YouTube, the modern feminist.
Quite
>Not exactly something innovative, but depending on how it plays out, it could be very fun!
I think so
>Like I said earlier, wasn't expecting that lol
Me neither
>Not surprising, seeing as the VA plays Orochimaru, which was a sort of mad scientist too (I think?)
I don't think I'm familiar with the show
>I'm proud of him, always knew he could do it!
He seems like he's good at it
>Batshit insane lol
For real
>Did he really help her? Didn't he just say "You can do it!"?
Well, he was helping her by encouragement at least.
>The poor girl. It's probably gonna turn out to be very funny though!
And awkward 🙃
I think I've mentioned this before, my memory is very, very bad. I don't remember her being clumsy!
>I don't think I'm familiar with the show
It's the character's name, from Naruto!
Maybe not clumsy per se, but definitely forgetful. And also very klutzy.
>It's the character's name, from Naruto!
Ah, okay. I'm ashamed to admit I've actually never seen Naruto before.
Doesn't clumsy have the same meaning as klutzy?
>I'm ashamed to admit I've actually never seen Naruto before.
No shame in that, I didn't watch it either until the covid lockdown! And I was mostly watching Shounen Anime before 2019!
It depends. To me, clumsy is always klutzy but klutzy is not always clumsy. Clumsy you're more so falling down all the time. Klutzy I classify as not having all your ducks in a row.
>No shame in that, I didn't watch it either until the covid lockdown! And I was mostly watching Shounen Anime before 2019!
It's funny because I feel like some anime fans get labeled as casuals if their favorites are Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach, Demon Slayer, or My Hero Academia. I haven't seen any of those series.
I see, English isn't my first language, I just figured they were the same thing!
>It's funny because I feel like some anime fans get labeled as casuals if their favorites are Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach, Demon Slayer, or My Hero Academia. I haven't seen any of those series.
Wow, none of those?! I get not watching all of them, but damn, that's almost like you're purposefully avoiding them! Any specific reason why you won't watch at least Kimetsu? The others I kinda get, but that one just seems odd to me!
They're similar, but different classes of each other, like being a geek Vs being a nerd.
>Wow, none of those?! I get not watching all of them, but damn, that's almost like you're purposefully avoiding them! Any specific reason why you won't watch at least Kimetsu? The others I kinda get, but that one just seems odd to me!
I'm not actively avoiding them, I've just been interested in other stuff. I guess I'm just more of a slice of life/romcom kinda guy. I actually do like action anime, though, Chainsaw Man and Dandadan are two of my favorites. And Cowboy Bebop which has a ton of action is what I consider to be the gold standard of storytelling.
I should at least watch Demon Slayer sometime because I watched both Fullmetal Alchemist series in the last couple years and they finished highly for me. Hell, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood I have as my second favorite anime of all time. Demon Slayer feels like it has a similar level of heart to it.
- Probably not look particularly convincing
- The difference in how people treat you
Episode:
This is probably the third rewatch, with my first being a long long time ago. It is nice sometimes to revisit these old titles though and there's a certain brand of silliness that you find in titles from this era.
Just as some random thoughts:
- It feels quite harsh to outright set Hibiki up for failure by giving him Fuuko as a student.
- The Principal making the students wear the impractically long skirts fits considering her views, but that the Vice Principal is allowed to wear a tight mini-skirt seems to contrast that... In the end, this isn't a serious anime though, as is made apparently from the opening scenes.
- There is a bit of 'if you squint', but the messaging of 'when you find someone, you have to go for it' and 'when the time comes, your body will move on it's own' from Fuuko's friend worked nicely with the end of the episode.
- Got to love a reprise of the opening for important moments.
My problem is people wouldn't care enough to notice [](#sadholo)

I'm not sure what that means [](#niatilt)
>This is probably the third rewatch, with my first being a long long time ago. It is nice sometimes to revisit these old titles though and there's a certain brand of silliness that you find in titles from this era.
Anime at this point is at an interesting stage. We're post Eva, so there's still a lot of clones going around, but then we have animes like this. I don't think anime really changed all too much until like the release of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime and Elfen Lied, and then that became what anime was for a while until like Madoka Magica came out.
>- It feels quite harsh to outright set Hibiki up for failure by giving him Fuuko as a student.
It does feel like intentional sabotage

I thought so. I thought the whole episode had a rather wholesome vibe to it.
>- Got to love a reprise of the opening for important moments.
I'll never get enough of it [](#ilovethiskindashit)
**Edit**: Had to combine something because one of the other comments got nuked. That's why the thread kinda looks like a mess.
Not really the place to go into in depth, but whether it's conscious choice or unconscious bias, people tend to act differently to men and women, holding different expectations, reacting to them in different ways, and so on. There are quite a lot of studies on this sort of thing.
As one example, when women are assertive, this is seen more negatively at times than it is when men are. While there's an expectation that men are more stoic at certain times and people react more poorly when they show emotional weakness.

What are your thoughts on the landlord lady?
What are your thoughts on Hibiki having to pay the rent that's due?
Thoughts on the OP and the ED?
Thoughts on Fuko who seems rather clumsy?
Thoughts on Hibiki having aspirations to be a teacher?
What are your thoughts on the school principal not letting Hibiki be a teacher at the school she runs because he's a man and she thinks men are barbarians?
What are your thoughts on the premise of the show which is Hibiki has to pose as a female in order to get a teaching job so he can pay his rent?
What are your thoughts on landlord lady helping Hibiki look like a woman?
What are your thoughts on landlord lady giving Hibiki a voice modifier from her days as an electronics expert?
What are your thoughts on Hibiki getting the job as the gym teacher?
Thoughts on the principal imposing restrictive gym clothes to avoid male gazing?
Thoughts on Hibiki helping Fuko by shortening her skirt, which makes her run better?
What are your thoughts on even though Fuko thinks Hibiki is a woman, she wonders if she may have feelings for her?
- Kind of a well-meaning idiot. Literally marches into the school held back by guards. Of course he's not getting an interview, even if the Principal didn't hate men.
What are your thoughts on Hibiki having to pay the rent that's due?
- I mean, again links to him being an idiot. He should know when it's due before moving.
Thoughts on the OP and the ED?
- OP is an old favorite. ED is nice too, if not memorable.
Thoughts on Fuko who seems rather clumsy?
- Sweet girl, if a bit oblivious. We get a nice glimpse of her strength at the end of this episode.
Thoughts on Hibiki having aspirations to be a teacher?
- Lack of common sense and ability to recall names aside, might make a good one.
What are your thoughts on the school principal not letting Hibiki be a teacher at the school she runs because he's a man and she thinks men are barbarians?
- I know why having watched it before, but future episode spoilers. But while this is kind of a parody, I have unfortunately known people who are kind of like that, if to a far lesser extent.
What are your thoughts on the premise of the show which is Hibiki has to pose as a female in order to get a teaching job so he can pay his rent?
- Typical anime stuff aside, it's pretty progressive in challenging gender norms, especially for the time. More so in that it's not just so he can pay his rent, but that he wants to prove the Principal's sexist views on men wrong.
Thoughts on the principal imposing restrictive gym clothes to avoid male gazing?
- Admittedly some logic to it. Seeing the guys perv over girls in their PE uniforms is pretty common in anime. Taken to the extreme again though. I mean the skirt kind of fits the whole 'traditions' and old school feeling too, but they could've had trousers.
Thoughts on Hibiki helping Fuko by shortening her skirt, which makes her run better?
- This didn't happen, did it? She whispered something to Fuuko before she did it, but it was later revealed just to be 'it'll be fine'. IMO part of the impact was Fuuko deciding to do that on her own.
What are your thoughts on even though Fuko thinks Hibiki is a woman, she wonders if she may have feelings for her?
- Setting up some interesting questions for Fuuko to think about and an ongoing source of confusion for her. The age and position difference are more of a barrier though.
(Some questions omitted for time / mostly being informed by later episodes)
He probably should've submitted an application.
>- I mean, again links to him being an idiot. He should know when it's due before moving.
He probably does but he's short on cash.
>- OP is an old favorite. ED is nice too, if not memorable.
I like the various outfits Fuko wears
>- Sweet girl, if a bit oblivious. We get a nice glimpse of her strength at the end of this episode.
That we do
>- Lack of common sense and ability to recall names aside, might make a good one.
Indeed
>- I know why having watched it before, but future episode spoilers. But while this is kind of a parody, I have unfortunately known people who are kind of like that, if to a far lesser extent.
She seems rather extreme
>- Typical anime stuff aside, it's pretty progressive in challenging gender norms, especially for the time. More so in that it's not just so he can pay his rent, but that he wants to prove the Principal's sexist views on men wrong.
Spite is a powerful motivator
>- Admittedly some logic to it. Seeing the guys perv over girls in their PE uniforms is pretty common in anime. Taken to the extreme again though. I mean the skirt kind of fits the whole 'traditions' and old school feeling too, but they could've had trousers.
It just looks so cumbersome. Like, how can you move around in it?
>- This didn't happen, did it? She whispered something to Fuuko before she did it, but it was later revealed just to be 'it'll be fine'. IMO part of the impact was Fuuko deciding to do that on her own.
Fair enough. I thought he did shorten it.
>- Setting up some interesting questions for Fuuko to think about and an ongoing source of confusion for her. The age and position difference are more of a barrier though.
I would agree with that
>(Some questions omitted for time / mostly being informed by later episodes)
I'm okay with that. I still appreciate you answering some of them :)
Happy new year everyone!
I’m still trying to figure out what the title of this show means. Is the “I My Me” part a reference to the song “I Me Mine” by the Beatles?
I looked a bit into the studio behind this, TNK. It seems they’re most famous for doing High School DxD and most infamous for School Days and Redo of Healer.
They also did Seven Mortal sins and Senran Kagura so it seems like they specialize in ecchi anime.
They also did Vtuber Legend from 2024 which people tell me is funny but I’ll only watch it if I can get over my prejudice against Vtubers.
That teacher guy Hibiki is giving me the same vibe as Kintaro from Golden Boy, just an overly enthusiastic dork. Just way less horny.
First impressions on Fuko is that she’s a pretty typical airheaded protagonist girl.
Hibiki hanging on to Lulu while she ignores him is a good visual gag.
How old is Miho’s boyfriend if he’s a nude model? Honestly until proven otherwise I’m just gonna assume she’s lying to impress Fujio and Fuko.
The architecture and uniforms at this school give me the same vibe as Ohtori Academy from Revolutionary Girl Utena.
I’m also weirdly reminded of Prison School just because of the basic set up.
I do like Hibiki’s motivation is to prove that he can be loving though. It certainly makes him much more likeable than any of the protagonists in Prison School.
I do think this show also does a better job at presenting this type of character than Prison School does. Since the principal’s dislike of men and ideas of women as inherently gentle comes from her own old-fashioned sensibilities, you can see why she would be like this.
I don’t know why there’s a harmonica on the soundtrack for Hibiki’s makeover montage but I appreciate it.
Apparently Lulu just has access to magic voice changing technology?! Okay, that’s weird. She says she was an “electronics expert” but this feels like a gadget James Bond would use.
Hibiki’s disguise is actually pretty convincing.
I do like that Hibiki seems actually enthusiastic about being a teacher. When I read the premise of the show, part of me worried he’d be kind of a creep. That’s part of why I never got past the first episode of Great Teacher Onizuka. But so far Hibiki seems like a good guy.
Granted, based on the ending of this episode I do feel like this show is gonna go for the whole student-teacher romance angle which definitely feels a bit gross to me. But at least they don’t have Hibiki being overtly creepy.
I’m watching this show dubbed by the way and something interesting to note is that it does seem to keep most of the Japanese terminology and honorifics intact which is pretty rare for dubs to do, especially in the 2000s.
I remember FLCL did something kinda similar, although I found it to be a lot more natural sounding there.
Anyway yeah based on this first episode I can confidently say that this is basically reverse Ouran High School Host Club. Both in terms of having a male protagonist and having a teacher as a protagonist instead of a student.
So far my favorite character is definitely Lulu, the landlady. I just like maniacal little old ladies, that’s why Turbo Granny is my favorite Dandadan character.
Despite being apprehensive about the student-teacher romance angle, I’ll still stick with this show and see what happens.
**What would you do if you were dressed up as the other gender?**
I dunno. Maybe go shopping for more dresses? I feel like Hibiki needs to start building up more of a wardrobe.
**What do you imagine would be the hardest thing to get used to as the opposite gender?**
Walking in heels. Either that or creepy guys hitting on me.
Yeah, he's kinda going through this like a blind bat.
>Walking in heels. Either that or creepy guys hitting on me.
What about creepy guys hitting on you while in heels? :P
[Happy New Year!](#toradorable)
I don't know about you, but I celebrated eating ribs :D
>I’m still trying to figure out what the title of this show means. Is the “I My Me” part a reference to the song “I Me Mine” by the Beatles?
Maybe.
I think the strawberry part is like maybe this gender fluid thing? The eggs part I feel like is obvious.
>I looked a bit into the studio behind this, TNK. It seems they’re most famous for doing High School DxD and most infamous for School Days and Redo of Healer.
Truly high quality stuff lol
>They also did Seven Mortal sins and Senran Kagura so it seems like they specialize in ecchi anime.
Which is funny because this show is like a departure from that in my opinion.
>They also did Vtuber Legend from 2024 which people tell me is funny but I’ll only watch it if I can get over my prejudice against Vtubers.
It's funny you have a prejudice against Vtubers when I consider that a massive hobby of mine. I think it's because I can look past the whole gimmick and appreciate the goofiness of a lot of the people. They can be endearingly over the top.
>That teacher guy Hibiki is giving me the same vibe as Kintaro from Golden Boy, just an overly enthusiastic dork. Just way less horny.
Interesting comparison. Another person he reminds me of is Kitamura from Toradora. But again, less horny lol
>First impressions on Fuko is that she’s a pretty typical airheaded protagonist girl.
She kinda has this Nagisa from Clannad vibe about her. That, and the dinosaur girl from Air.
>Hibiki hanging on to Lulu while she ignores him is a good visual gag.
Yeah, that was funny
>How old is Miho’s boyfriend if he’s a nude model? Honestly until proven otherwise I’m just gonna assume she’s lying to impress Fujio and Fuko.
It does seem very specific and calculating. Also, the fact he's a model in general is suspicious.
>The architecture and uniforms at this school give me the same vibe as Ohtori Academy from Revolutionary Girl Utena.
I can see that. Honestly, that's not the only comparison of Utena that comes to mind with this show.
>I’m also weirdly reminded of Prison School just because of the basic set up.
Well, there seems to be less ass focus lol
>I do like Hibiki’s motivation is to prove that he can be loving though. It certainly makes him much more likeable than any of the protagonists in Prison School.
There's a genuineness about him that I find likable. Plus, him trying to pay rent on time is relatable.
>I do think this show also does a better job at presenting this type of character than Prison School does. Since the principal’s dislike of men and ideas of women as inherently gentle comes from her own old-fashioned sensibilities, you can see why she would be like this.
She's essentially a stick in the mud
>I don’t know why there’s a harmonica on the soundtrack for Hibiki’s makeover montage but I appreciate it.
It's very stylish and country feeling
>Apparently Lulu just has access to magic voice changing technology?! Okay, that’s weird. She says she was an “electronics expert” but this feels like a gadget James Bond would use.
I feel like Lulu will be something we learn more of as we go along. I imagine she will continue to surprise.
>Hibiki’s disguise is actually pretty convincing.
He pulls off looking like a lady well
>I do like that Hibiki seems actually enthusiastic about being a teacher. When I read the premise of the show, part of me worried he’d be kind of a creep. That’s part of why I never got past the first episode of Great Teacher Onizuka. But so far Hibiki seems like a good guy.
And Hibiki it seems like has no ulterior motives. He just cares about helping others and making money.
>Granted, based on the ending of this episode I do feel like this show is gonna go for the whole student-teacher romance angle which definitely feels a bit gross to me. But at least they don’t have Hibiki being overtly creepy.
And Fuko being the one to have feelings is at least understandable. This is often a fantasy of those growing up.
I actually really like the localization references of FLCL. Stuff like them talking about Crystal Pepsi I feel like made the show oddly more iconic.
There seems to be less pop culture references in this show, which I'm fine with. It feels like it already has this vibe going on. Honestly, it feels a bit like Non Non Biyori but more emotional.
>Anyway yeah based on this first episode I can confidently say that this is basically reverse Ouran High School Host Club. Both in terms of having a male protagonist and having a teacher as a protagonist instead of a student.
It's not a bad idea for a show, truth be told
>So far my favorite character is definitely Lulu, the landlady. I just like maniacal little old ladies, that’s why Turbo Granny is my favorite Dandadan character.
I imagine Lulu is going to be a consistent highlight in this show. She leaves quite the impression.
>Despite being apprehensive about the student-teacher romance angle, I’ll still stick with this show and see what happens.
I find it hard to believe Fuko and Hibiki will actually get together. I feel like the show would be more remembered if that was the case lol
**Edit**: Had to combine something because one of the other comments got nuked. That's why the thread kinda looks like a mess.
Maybe it's like strawberries are a feminine fruit? I know that in Japanese the name Ichigo (which means strawberry) is typically a feminine name.
>It's funny you have a prejudice against Vtubers when I consider that a massive hobby of mine. I think it's because I can look past the whole gimmick and appreciate the goofiness of a lot of the people. They can be endearingly over the top.
I have seen some funny clips but they're mostly not my thing.
>She kinda has this Nagisa from Clannad vibe about her. That, and the dinosaur girl from Air.
I haven't seen Clannad but I definitely see the resemblance to Misuzu from Air.
>I can see that. Honestly, that's not the only comparison of Utena that comes to mind with this show.
Well the school here seems to be less patriarchal than the one from Utena.
>And Hibiki it seems like has no ulterior motives. He just cares about helping others and making money.
Good for him honestly.
>And Fuko being the one to have feelings is at least understandable. This is often a fantasy of those growing up.
I am glad it just seems one sided from Fuko's perspective.
You would think they would use something to represent Hibiki secretly being a guy.
>I have seen some funny clips but they're mostly not my thing.
Hey, that's fair. I'm into wrestling which I know you're not.
>I haven't seen Clannad but I definitely see the resemblance to Misuzu from Air.
Maybe a little less precocious
>Well the school here seems to be less patriarchal than the one from Utena.
And there's less fights lol
>Good for him honestly.
He knows what he wants to achieve
>I am glad it just seems one sided from Fuko's perspective.
And even then she seems confused
Well I think that's what the "eggs" part of the title means.

Feels like a very classic comedy setup

Nice of her to help

Fun fact, in real life at around the same time a lot of schools in Japan were phasing out the old girls gym uniforms for similar reasons. They just replaced them with regular gym shorts though, not skirts.

Indeed he does

I like that we don't waste any time. The show wants to get right in there.

I'll be curious to see how the show handles this. I know me and you just got done watching Shakugan no Shana which had a similar plot point, but I can't imagine it going the same way.
Yeah they kinda cut it out of the anime but in the manga a major plot element is Nagumo being behind on her rent with the granny character.
Honestly for as much as I loved the CITY anime they really did cut down on a lot of stuff.
>\[Future episode spoilers\] >!I imagine you have some thoughts on episode 2 :P!<
\[Response\] >!Well yeah but episode 3 is the one all about gym clothes!<

Yeah I feel like it's gonna be handled differently here
Interesting. I really need to check out the manga.

Probably less fantasy based

Seeing that Holo is ~~producing~~ hosting another seemingly classic (and old-fashioned) harem anime, I decided to give it a try. The opening scene of the old woman chasing down each tenant for rent made me laugh out loud, because I've actually experienced not being able to pay rent! We get to observe each student from a third-person perspective, and their interactions with Hibiki, whose attitude are rather indifferent. What impressed me most was the last scene; the way Hibiki comforts Fuko and hugs her at the end was just so cute! It looks like this will be a very interesting show!
ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)
What would you do if you were dressed up as the other gender?
I’ll probably go out during Halloween or Comiket, since I won’t stand out as much. I’d feel too embarrassed otherwise, LOL.
What do you imagine would be the hardest thing to get used to as the opposite gender?
For me, the answer is makeup. I rarely take care of my appearance, so it's hard for me to take the first step.
So far, it doesn't scream harem anime

I like the sincerity with which the show seems to have.

She seems more suited to be a PE teacher than HIbiki, Lol. Overall, she's a very interesting person; you can't treat her like an ordinary old woman.

This op is one of my favorites so far; the melody itself is absolutely amazing! The visuals in the ed are also beautiful, and Fuko's outfits changing with the seasons are so cute!
> Thoughts on Fuko who seems rather clumsy?

I know the creators are trying to characterize Fuko to make her memorable, but it looks too exaggerated. Even in an anime, such a flat-ground fall is a bit unrealistic.
> Thoughts on Hibiki having aspirations to be a teacher?

He has a physical education teacher certificate, so that makes sense. Wait, won't the certificate indicate his gender?

My first reaction was that this must be wrong, until I watched the second episode...
> What are your thoughts on the premise of the show which is Hibiki has to pose as a female in order to get a teaching job so he can pay his rent?

The foundation of this anime is surprisingly solid. First, he can't even afford the rent, so survival is his strongest motivation. Second, he just moved here, meaning he must have come for this school, which shows he still harbors the ideal of becoming a teacher. He would definitely be willing to make significant sacrifices, and everything seems reasonable.

It seems she wasn't just after the rent or her interest in Hibiki; she appears to know the school's principal, and they must have some kind of backstory.
> What are your thoughts on landlord lady giving Hibiki a voice modifier from her days as an electronics expert?
>
I know there are many sound adjustment apps on computers or Android now, but I'm still amazed that such an idea existed 25 years ago.
> What are your thoughts on Hibiki getting the job as the gym teacher?
>
He deserves it.
> Thoughts on the principal imposing restrictive gym clothes to avoid male gazing?
>
Ruru is right, she really has something wrong with her head.
> Thoughts on Hibiki helping Fuko by shortening her skirt, which makes her run better?
>
If I remember correctly, Fuko proactively rolled up her skirt, Hibiki was just comforting her, and Buruma appeared in episode 2.
> What are your thoughts on even though Fuko thinks Hibiki is a woman, she wonders if she may have feelings for her?
They complement each other perfectly.
Yeah, I like Hibiki quite a bit
>She seems more suited to be a PE teacher than HIbiki, Lol. Overall, she's a very interesting person; you can't treat her like an ordinary old woman.
No, you certainly can't
>In my comment
Fair enough
>This op is one of my favorites so far; the melody itself is absolutely amazing! The visuals in the ed are also beautiful, and Fuko's outfits changing with the seasons are so cute!
The animation in the ED feels kinda static, but I still like it.
>I know the creators are trying to characterize Fuko to make her memorable, but it looks too exaggerated. Even in an anime, such a flat-ground fall is a bit unrealistic.
I think it depends. Like, the dinosaur girl from Air was kinda like this as well.
>He has a physical education teacher certificate, so that makes sense. Wait, won't the certificate indicate his gender?
I guess not?
>My first reaction was that this must be wrong, until I watched the second episode...
Lol, yeah
>The foundation of this anime is surprisingly solid. First, he can't even afford the rent, so survival is his strongest motivation. Second, he just moved here, meaning he must have come for this school, which shows he still harbors the ideal of becoming a teacher. He would definitely be willing to make significant sacrifices, and everything seems reasonable.
You understand why Hibiki has to do what he has to do.
>It seems she wasn't just after the rent or her interest in Hibiki; she appears to know the school's principal, and they must have some kind of backstory.
Maybe
>I know there are many sound adjustment apps on computers or Android now, but I'm still amazed that such an idea existed 25 years ago.
It shows how smart Lulu is
>He deserves it.
Very much so
>Ruru is right, she really has something wrong with her head.
That she does
>If I remember correctly, Fuko proactively rolled up her skirt, Hibiki was just comforting her, and Buruma appeared in episode 2.
Episode 3, you mean
>They complement each other perfectly.
If only the age discrepancy wasn't a thing
