Need to Know What to Watch Next (Vinland Saga)

I used to love anime as a kid (I’m 33 now). As an adult I’ve been wanting to try to get back into the genre but it’s kind of overwhelming.

The only thing I watched recently in terms of anime that I truly loved was Vinland Saga. I like how grounded it felt compared to more fantasy orientated anime.

What should I watch next if I loved Vinland Saga?

Before you justifiably dismiss the fantasy genre in anime (I know most suck utter balls), try watching "Dungeon Meshi" (amazing), "Frieren" (hilarious), and "Made in Abyss" (immersive soundtrack) first.

That aside, let's circle back to "Vinland" tangents.

For Vinland "clones", I'd direct you to the philosophical "Orb: On the Movements of the Earth", and the recently announced upcoming "Historie" anime (featuring sieges and all flavors of ancient warfare/intrigue.

Speaking of intrigue, if you like smart detectives and politics, please give "Apothecary Diaries" a shot. It is very well received and has a smart protagonist.

More grounded stuff... more grounded...

You can try "Erased", a time traveling mystery thriller.

"The Fable"... is hard to get into because of the first few episodes, but is worth your while if you like stoic hitmen badasses and comic relief.

"Spice and Wolf" might appeal to you, it has banter, barter, and travel with 2 adult characters.

There's plenty of more stuff, but I can only think of so much off the top of my head at a given time.

Orb was my first answer. It's one of a kind and the opening is amazing. Then read your comment. I would also add some older ones like Casshern Sins, Ergo Proxy, Death Parade, Shinsekai Yori, Megalo Box and Psycho-Pass (highly recommended!)

Then a bit more shoujo there's Madoka Magika, Yuki Yuuna and Symphogear. They're all a bit more serious regarding what it takes. They're all likable imo

The little girls jumping onto 3 story buildings and the butler walking circles around a whale as if wearing moons boots (antigravity) would be the opposite of what I'd describe as grounded.

I am very particular about the physics of things.

A more recent one I would recommend you [Orb](https://anilist.co/anime/151514/Chi-Chikyuu-no-Undou-ni-Tsuite/), similiar feel like Vinland Saga (especially S2) with less Action.

A bit older and maybe you have already seen them, but if you liked VS, you should check out [Berserk](https://anilist.co/anime/33/Kenpuu-Denki-Berserk/) (watch only the 97 TV Show and the Golden Age Movies, ignore what ever happened in 2016... and if your open for it, read the Manga), also give [Kingdom](https://anilist.co/anime/12031/Kingdom/), visuals aren't good at the beginnen but that gets better with the time but the Story is amazing from the beginning.

And yeah not an Anime, but if you try the Manga [Vagabond](https://anilist.co/manga/30656/Vagabond/).

I would say 91 days is pretty grounded and it’s got similar themes to Vinland Saga it’s about a man who joins the mob that killed his family to get revenge. Golden Kamuy is also grounded and it’s got some historical references in it it’s about a former soldier in the 20th century pursuing a map that leads to a stash of stolen gold. Parts of the map are tattooed on high level criminals so the only way to retrieve it is by taking their skin. It’s a lot more than that, but I don’t wanna spoil it but I really suggest that one! The final season starts January 5th.
