There's a 12 ep season 2 from 2017. A lot of people didn't like it. I thought it was ok. The only way to get the full story is the read the manga currently. by full story I don't mean an ending because the author died before he finished it.

Okay so theoretically, does it go 1997 berserk, then 2017, then golden age arc movies? Or is it worth skipping the 2017 and going from 1997 to the golden age arc movies

Neither. The 1997 adaptation and the Golden Age movies adapt the same arc: The Golden Age.
The first 4 arcs of Berserk go like this:
Black Swordsman
Golden Age (flashback)
Lost Children
Conviction
The 1997 adaptation and the movies both cover The Golden Age. They work as a starting point anyway because the Golden Age is chronologically first since it's a flashback arc.
The 2016 series starts at Conviction.
Both the 1997 series and the 2016 one briefly touch on the Black Swordsman arc, but neither does it fully.
This means no matter what if you stick to anime only you'll be missing 2 very important arcs.
So the only real options are:
1. Just read the manga
2. Watch the 1997 series then read the manga
3. Watch the Golden Age movies and then read the manga
1997 series is generally considered better than the movies. The movies adapt slightly further into the story but they also skip more than the original series.
No matter what choice you make you should read the entire manga including the Golden Age, since both adaptations skip quite a bit of it.

Thank your for this great answer! I will definitely take that advice :)

the movies adapt the same arc, but go a little bit further for a better stopping point.
Personally, you can just watch 1997 and then read the manga.

Ah, that makes sense

Just the 25 the movies are just a shorter adaptation of the 1997 show. I’d still recommend watching them I like some of the foreshadowing they do in the movies more than the show but overall the show is vastly better.
You also got the 2017 show that is a sequel to 97’ but it’s a slog to get through and the animation is horse shit

Okay so then it’s essentially watch the 1997 version, then leave it there (and of course read manga after)?
