{Ancient Magus' Bride} [🔗](https://youtu.be/lgczDtsmdeg)

{Violet Evergarden} [🔗](https://youtu.be/LFVKmVTAHpk)

Confusedgmr2026-01-02 21:03

I shouldn't judge a anime by it's premise, but the premise of Ancient Magus' Bride makes me uncomfortable.

Mixer-30072026-01-02 21:05

yea, you shouldn’t

solfrost2026-01-02 21:12

It’s a very problematic start but the weirdness is quickly passed and the resulting story is worth it imo, I can certainly understand any trepidation after the first few minutes though.

El_grandepadre2026-01-02 22:25

You absolutely shouldn't in this case.

Silvermoon34672026-01-02 22:34

TW: self harm, light spoilers

It's okay if it makes you uncomfortable, but if you're going by the Crunchyroll synopsis it's not... quite accurate. I was very hesitant about it myself but ended up liking it enough to finish it, at least. It's not in my top ten or anything but I'm glad I gave it a chance.

She sells *herself* at the auction in the first ep because she's basically given up on life, but she's so depressed because of how bad her life is that she can't even be bothered to kill herself. The show is as much about her rediscovering the will to live as it is anything else.

The romance plot *is* a bit weird because dude is like several thousand years old and she's 16, but he doesn't keep her prisoner and force her to marry him or anything. Still my least favorite part of it, but the rest of it is good enough it didn't put me off after the first few eps.

Anyway, I get it. Just wanted to make sure you had more context than the horrifically bad Crunchyroll synopsis to make a decision with lol.

Prophage72026-01-02 21:23

+1 for Ancient Magus' Bride. It's a really good follow up show to Frieren because it's got a similar vibe: slower paced and not action heavy with gorgeous animation and beautiful score.

sprinklesandlove2026-01-02 22:05

Violet Evergarden, does not get enough love. I know what is out there, but it's still not enough.

Informal_Actuator2802026-01-02 22:31

Violet Evergarden Movie feels so underrated istg

If you're interested in another fantasy anime, how about Somali and the Forest Spirit. [https://myanimelist.net/anime/39575/Somali\_to\_Mori\_no\_Kamisama](https://myanimelist.net/anime/39575/Somali_to_Mori_no_Kamisama)

The trailers for this anime are pretty spoiler heavy, so I suggest avoiding them. However the opening is a pretty good representation of the anime and doesn't contain any spoilers, so watch this if like like the opening: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGqDymejNQU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGqDymejNQU)

Welcome to the N.H.K

Basilisk_Says2026-01-02 20:38

The Apothecary Diaries - impeccable period drama/mystery series

Odd Taxi - great one season mystery/thriller

Apocalypse Hotel - fantastic one season comedy genre blender

Shangri-La Frontier - great action series that really nails watching a pro gamer in an MMO

Of the other two choices, I know Oshi no Ko has a hell of an opening but I've heard it falls off toward the end. No clue of Fire Force.

EidolonRook2026-01-02 20:52

Great choices here. Apothacary and Shangrila are probably my favorites of the list. and Oshi no ko definitely becomes a different feeling show.

Fire force is… a new fairy tail anime? There’s literally a character who can’t keep her clothes on. Nothing I saw in it that show that black clover didn’t do better and that’s with Asta being annoying.

Confusedgmr2026-01-02 21:05

Shangri-La Frontier is surprisingly good. I took one look at the birdman on the cover and assumed it was going to be something extremely stupid. But after giving it a chance it's one of my favorite animes' now.

blackninjaman282026-01-02 21:14

I think part of the charm of SLF is that it’s at least a little bit stupid. It captures that stupid fun you have with friends playing video games. It knows that gamers can be goofy.

Atulin2026-01-02 21:53

Also, contrary to many "trapped in an MMO" genre anime, it never forgets that the action takes place *in a game*.

Which, somehow, makes the stakes higher to me, by the way. Since it's a game, and he can revive, it means he can *die*. In contrast, I have never feared for the lives of Shiroe or Kirito.

seitaer132026-01-02 22:50

Characters in Log Horizon can die. SAO characters can die in every arc in the series after the first because they are games, and Kirito does die multiple times.

Shambhala872026-01-03 02:36

I don’t like the video game tournament arc…

AN1MAN1AC2026-01-02 23:43

Apocalypse Hotel is so underrated. That series is incredible and needs a lot more love. One of my favourites from this year. I loved every second of it. It made me laugh and cry. Plus, I love Aiko. Her opening and ending songs there are great

LaplaceZ2026-01-03 00:21

I think Ascendance of a Bookworm is also a good one.

Not the same plot or anything, but I'd say it has similar vibes to Frieren and Apothecary

bassman21122026-01-03 00:48

Interestingly I'd say Oshi no Ko has a weirder trajectory than you described haha.

The very first episode is peak.

The rest of season one is fine, sometimes bad, with moments of brilliance.

Season 2 gets better and better throughout, and ends amazingly.

ScumBrad2026-01-02 20:44

Oshi no ko is unbelievably good.

Hungry_Rub_10252026-01-02 20:58

The manga is so good, started the live action for fun yesterday, wasn't supposed to be that good.

Financial_Tour59452026-01-02 20:46

Violet evergarden

Same composer for the soundtrack.

Sweet-Toxicity2026-01-02 20:50

Wait for two weeks for Frieren season 2

PeaceAlien2026-01-02 20:54

Oshi no ko’s first episode is a full movie. Watch that without spoilers it’s a masterpiece, then decide if you want more. Fire Force is almost done the complete series I believe so maybe wait for that

Cain_draws2026-01-02 21:01

Orb: On the Movements of the earth

bassman21122026-01-03 00:52

Yes, a thousand times Orb. It's incredible, and has some similar tonal takeaways from the story

Grand-Subject-47332026-01-02 21:04

Yeah I keep seeing that Oshi no ko is amazing the one thing that keeps putting me off is that I’ve heard there trying to rush through the anime a skip over a bunch of stuff that was in the manga idk if this is true but I read it of somewhere

kormitgrog2026-01-02 22:26

Pretty sure that’s kaguya.

NoCook16662026-01-06 21:42

Late but as the other comment said you probably read something about Kaguya-Sama instead of OnK. People like to mention two together because they have the same author, Which in turn might have confused you. Oshi No Ko is an excellent adaptation that even surpasses the manga for many viewers. They’re taking their time adapting every part of the story. Kaguya-Sama, on the other hand, initially had a great adaptation like OnK’s, but now they’re rushing and skipping like you may have read, and nobody’s happy about it.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Movies_and_Stuff2026-01-02 21:20

Well fire force and oshi no ko have new seasons coming out very soon so I’d recommend watching one of those. I like both of them(I love Oshi no Ko) but I’d just recommend you pick whichever one you’re in the mood for as the genres are very different.

Delicious in dungeon

lunadiparmigiano2026-01-03 00:29

I don't know, it is okay but if you come from Frieren it's gonna big a huge disappointment.

kapesaumaga2026-01-03 03:53

It's a different vibe for sure but I doubt it'll be a huge disappointment. Worldbuilding for one is way better executed and explored in Dungeon Meshi. But if you're looking for a slow burn, reflective journey type of anime then you'll be a little disappointed in Dungeon Meshi.

_Pyxyty2026-01-03 09:49

Besides, the overall level of quality between the two is pretty neck and neck. I'd still put Frieren on top, but only by a miniscule amount. The writing in Dungeon Meshi is superb and rewatching it has plenty of value with tons of new things I'm picking up on, clues and foreshadowing of future events. And as you said, the worldbuilding is also great, delivered in a natural and deliberate manner.

lunadiparmigiano2026-01-03 12:06

I like Dungeon Meshi and I think it is a very good fantasy comedy, has great animations and lovable characters, but when it comes to worldbuilding, writing, and psychological depth, it is way below Frieren.

I disagree on what you say about worldbuilding. Frieren has the best worldbuilding in a fantasy anime, it is Tolkien-level in every aspect, from magic system to architecture to geography. Each city the party of Frieren visits feels alive and has a very distinct character.

Dungeon Meshi worldbuilding is very derivative of TTRPG, so it's not very original when compared to the usual fantasy/isekai anime, and while the author has indeed put a lot of effort in creating recipes for the monster, the world is as generic as it gets.

Kuraeshin2026-01-02 23:02

On a different theme, Apothecary Diaries. I watched it after wanting something like Frieren. I watched Season 1 in 4 days. Season 2 took 3 weeks...because i had to wait for the last 2 episodes to come out.

Poobrick2026-01-03 01:46

Between those two I think oshi no ko is a lot better. It has much deeper character writing whereas I feel like fire force has cool ideas but really doesn’t flush them out at all

Gold_Honey97532026-01-03 02:07

If you want something you can watch real quick, there’s a series called Milky Subway. It’s 12 episodes long, with a prequel episode called Milky Highway as well. So 13 episodes total, but each episode is only like 3 and a half mins long. So you could watch it all in under 45 mins. From what it sounds like, it was all made and produced by one dude. Really fun story with fun characters and good cgi. It’s also all available on YouTube.

sunnydayz572026-01-03 02:09

All three of the shows you mentioned are getting new seasons this month. It'd probably be easiest to wait for Frieren season 2 in 3 weeks since you're already caught up, but you can try catching up with Oshi no Ko too since that only has about 24 eps total. Fire Force is a entertaining show with great animation and an interesting storyline and lore, but that already has two and a half seasons released totaling to around 70 episodes so it would take more time to catch up with that one.

Grand-Subject-47332026-01-03 10:43

Yeah I keep seeing Oshi no ko so that’s my pick I’ll js wait for season 2 of Frieren first tho since I also keep seeing to do that

Tsumaranai_Jinsei2026-01-03 02:44

In a weird way the water magician has somewhat similar vibes to Frieren. A lot of people think it lost its steam along the way but I really enjoyed it!

Gamera682026-01-03 04:12

Frieren season 2 begins on Jan. 16th.

Most like frieren - delicious in dungeon

Kinda similar but more long running - hunter X hunter.

Something different with a new season soon - trigun stampede

Evil pick- elfin lied.

Can't go wrong with both, they have quite nice animations. The hot new thing now is Gachiakuta, also worth a look.
