They should have had him go into an abandoned alley before he broke down in pain
Splurch2026-01-03 04:07
The XYZ Cocktail must have been a painkiller.
Simple-Conference7422026-01-03 03:33
Man I love anime.

I really liked that trick at the end. Thanks for sharing this clip.
Accurate_Cry_89372026-01-03 04:32
You're welcome.
thedicestoppedrollin2026-01-04 04:59
Modern anime has ruined how I think. I thought he was going to land the perfect shot and have the bullet travel down the bone once the gun arm was horizontal. This is much more plausible and just as badass
abandoned_idol2026-01-04 05:19
If you're curious about clever combat in more recent anime, "World Trigger" gets **far too creative (and justified)** with its weapon pool.
Not really related to this clip at all, just an example of recent critical thinking (granted that the old season 1 is eleven years old now).
burntends972026-01-08 00:52
He does a similar shot in the series btw
Fimbir2026-01-03 04:01
I was waiting for him to flip out. Nice.
_-Smoke-_2026-01-03 04:11
There's a certain charm with classic anime and its more muted palettes that just isn't replicated these days.
lan600002026-01-03 05:09
the trick is the characters look more human and adult-like instead of how most characters are designed these days.
Outlulz2026-01-03 07:47
This is why I recently became a huge fan of Tsukasa Hojo and read all his manga last year. He draws human adults beautifully. Family Compo especially.
He also draws Ryo's big ole cock a lot which is missing from the anime.
frnxt2026-01-03 10:34
I read Cat's Eye entirely last year, it was re-edited where I live so I figured "why not". It was a lot of fun, the diversity of character appearances (and their outfits, oh my, so many kinds!) is really refreshing.
Deathsroke2026-01-03 22:39
I don't quite dislike it but the "moeification" of most animes is annoying, not gonna lie.
KanraLovesU2026-01-03 04:14
"Its called XYZ... in other words, the end of the line." goes so fucking hard
DoksMistake2026-01-03 04:15
God Damn Ryo Saeba is a fucking legend
eetsumkaus2026-01-03 04:21
the clip briefly reminded me of [No-pan Kissa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-pan_kissa), or pantyless cafes, a Bubble era staple sex industry establishment.
The entire thing screams late Showa era Japan, I love it.
hawkeye1222026-01-03 04:57
Or perhaps use hollow-points? Lots of force dispersion on impact with those, almost like that's the point...
ultranoobian2026-01-03 05:19
Well his hand would be much more significantly injured...

Did you watch the clip until the end? Didn't exactly "walk it off like it was nothing".
mercury_pointer2026-01-03 06:26
I thought the reveal would be that a 357 revolver can also fire a 38 special or 38 short without modification, and that he keeps the 357 cartridge in a different chamber.
CertainPin29352026-01-03 06:35
I search nearly every day for that city hunters AVM with such an amazing sample of a song used in it from the 70 or 80, I fear I'll never find it. It's been 8 years
SpiritOrganic55782026-01-03 06:46
I swear... I can't see ryo saeba as him now... I only see him as Jackie Chan 😭
swordmalice2026-01-03 07:03
Man I really need to watch City Hunter, where do I start?
Outlulz2026-01-03 07:48
[You can watch it legally on Pluto.tv!](https://pluto.tv/us/on-demand/series/61bcbb08fef5db001a01ce44/season/1)
swordmalice2026-01-03 17:19
Awesome; thanks!

Retro crush has all the episodes, too. Also a publisher called Kana is releasing new omnibus volumes of City Hunter and Cat's Eye in English. Volume 2 of each comes out about a week from now.

I have never seen anything as old as this I believe (death note might be the closest) but dang the girl looks so pretty for whether it's the style or something else idk.
placeres2026-01-03 13:57
In the 80s-90s, anime reached its peak. Japan had a lot of money and spent tons on VHS (ancient tecnologhy). Investment in animation was high, and artists could afford a realistic style.
When the crisis hit, the only ones still buying those really expensive VHS tapes were hardcore fans, with budget tighter It led to that infantilized style that we have very seldom escaped from, except for geniuses like Satoshi Kon or similar creators.
Ed_Dantesk2026-01-03 09:40
Tsukasa Hojo's style looks so great !
thoughtlow2026-01-03 10:29
good music, no tops, classic art style
good share

ZapsZzz2026-01-03 12:46
Speaking as an old gizzard, who read the manga version of this scene when it came out at the time, the manga version was so much more "noir" than the anime version. But the essence was still there. It's a lot more to the spirit of the show than the recent-ish live action movie I saw (and gave up after 10 mins).
It's also a bit like Dragon Ball, in that the early manga story was significantly different from how the rest of the story eventually turned out to be.
E.g. in the manga arc where this scene came from, the case is [City Hunter Manga source minor spoiler]>!that the client, a beautiful young doctor with terminal illness herself, hired "XYZ" (the code for hiring City Hunter) to kill the psycho boxer who killed her lover who was a reformed boxer on a come back trail. There's no pulling punches, and Ryo orchestrated the death to be a death in a ring by knock out (by using a custom made sniper round timed to hit while his opponent landing a punch at his head so his death is that of a loser's)!< No non-lethal punishments.

What a legend. If you haven’t already checked out the latest live action film on Netflix then I highly recommend it. I thought it captured the essence of the anime really well. Needless to say, also check out the Jackie Chan version if you haven’t already.
velocd2026-01-03 23:57
JoJo energy. Actually I'm reminded of the restaurant scene with Joseph and Straits.

FremanBloodglaive2026-01-04 10:29
That is a very stupid way to handle a firearm. He could have just fallen to one knee and fired upwards. That would see the bullet buried in the wall opposite, and probably avoiding a non-hostile.
