Honestly cool! The Crunchyroll app on my TV has been so laggy and I never have that issue with Netflix. Just in time for a rewatch of these morons
Ecstatic-Loquat-25792026-01-03 09:23
I downloaded it and watched smoothly on VLC player, 0 lags.
otakupervert890-12026-01-03 09:57
Been using it for 3 years on my fire tv and I can count on one hand when I had issues with it.
Asianizer2026-01-03 16:01
Ok 👍
Goronmon2026-01-03 18:02
Subtitles on Netflix are pretty terrible though. Aside from skipping translating most content that isn't directly spoken words, their subtitles setup can't handle multiple people talking or even too much talking all at once.
I swear I've watched some shows where they just skip translating some of the dialog because they couldn't make it fit on the screen.
Mediahead132026-01-03 20:28
[Cries in Ranma 1/2!]
Brave-Camp-9332026-01-03 10:07
I hope they finish the dub so that I can finally watch this
NathLWX2026-01-03 13:34
Bro got downvoted for wanting to watch the dub lmao this subreddit really got mad ppl have different opinion and preference
Brave-Camp-9332026-01-03 14:23
Yeah. I (just like most mentally sane people) watch movies and tv shows in English without subtitles. Why bother watching anime with subtitles when the dub is matching the same quality as sub nowadays?
Nettysocks2026-01-03 18:20
You also suck
NathLWX2026-01-03 23:55
Bro both sides are getting downvoted except my comment. This is so confusing lmao r/mysteriousdownvoting
Broad_Acanth2026-01-03 15:17
It's weird. We watch foreign films like Parasite or Oldboy and understand you should listen in original language to get full experience, but we don't have the same standard for anime. Maybe it's just due to the medium, but there's a strong sense of "well, dubs are good enough".
Lets take the VA for Gintoki for example. How is it just an opinion to compare a guy that went to voice acting school, won prizes during it, to go on voice act his whole life, compared to the dubber that does it as his part time job?
Sunshine1452026-01-03 16:41
Yea but sub purist are also like this for anime movies. Most of which don't cast voice actors as the leads, with the dubbers technically having more experience voice acting.
NightwingBlueberry132026-01-03 16:42
Idk personally for me there is mountain of difference between watching a LA foreign film vs an animated one because you already lost all facial/body acting, left will only the voice. And if I understand 0% of the words coming out of animated mouths then all nuance of their performance is lost on me, besides broad strokes like “happy” “sad” “angry”.
If I don’t understand what they’re saying I have no idea whether this is good VA or just a mid one, the only time I can tell the difference is if it’s absolute dog water. Hence lack of nuance.
Also it’s an animated medium, these aren’t real people where I can clearly tell that it’s been dubbed, because 99% the dubs match the lips well enough to not be distracting. I’d argue dubs are closer to manga TL’s with how easily it can TL’d into other languages with little loss of quality.
This is all my personal opinion and of course ymmv.
komata_kya2026-01-03 17:38
You can still sense the tone of their voice.
NathLWX2026-01-04 00:01
>We watch foreign films like Parasite or Oldboy and understand you should listen in original language to get full experience, but we don't have the same standard for anime.
Just my guess but I think it's most likely due to the lip sync. The way anime's lip movement in general works is just opening and closing their mouths without moving their tongue at all, and the lip movement looks "laggy"/"instantaneous" too, so it's much easier to lip-sync the dub and the differences are much less noticeable, compared to live action.
There's also the fact that ppl got used to watch anime like Pokemon, Naruto, and maybe Doraemon dubbed on TV during their childhood so they got used to dubbed anime
> Lets take the VA for Gintoki for example. How is it just an opinion to compare a guy that went to voice acting school, won prizes during it, to go on voice act his whole life, compared to the dubber that does it as his part time job?
This might sounds weird to you but at the end of the day it's just their preferences, there are a hundred of reasons ppl who prefer dub prefers it. Maybe they think it sounds better in English, maybe they just want to learn English (especially when English in Hollywood movies are hard to hear, [Vox](https://youtu.be/VYJtb2YXae8) made a video explaining this), maybe they think subtitles distract them from the visuals, maybe they think it sounds better depending on where it takes place and the vibe (e.g I watch Record of Ragnarok in English dub, but Kimi ni Todoke in Japanese), etc
The average Joe don't remember/know about the voice actors's experiences and awards, and they won't search for it, they're just watching anime, not hiring a voice actor where you'd do a background search on them. They most likely don't even remember or care who the voice actors are.
komata_kya2026-01-03 17:36
Yes the casuals should be downvoted.
Nettysocks2026-01-03 18:20
You suck
NightwingBlueberry132026-01-03 16:33
Yeah, same reason I haven’t started it yet, didn’t want to start, love it and have to stop because I ran outta dubbed episodes. Maybe Netflix will go all in this time and wrap it up.
Torque-A2026-01-03 14:04
Just remember: for new viewers, the first two episodes are anime-original and just celebrated the series getting an anime. Ignore them and start with "Nobody With Naturally Wavy Hair Can Be That Bad"
contrabardus2026-01-03 19:00
Also, the show has a very slow windup.
While there are some excellent episodes mixed in, it doesn't really become "great" until around episode 50.
It is 100% worth it.
Gintama is basically Anime Deadpool, and I mean as far as tone and humor goes.
Comic DP, not movie DP.
I don't have a problem with either, but the tone and comedy of comic and movie DP are different things.
DoseofDhillon2026-01-03 19:07
I mean there not that bad. If you really can’t sit through two okay episodes of anime although its the start, you’re probably not gonna get through 367 episodes of Gintama.
SilentMeatball2026-01-03 19:14
Okay thanks. I quit halfway through episode 1.
DetectiveFujiwara2026-01-03 21:16
Even though they are out of place I thought the first 2 filler episodes were hilarious
Massive_Weiner2026-01-03 21:45
They’re fun, but the actual opening of the series does a much better job of selling people on Gintama.
kenpachikirby2026-01-03 23:17
Dude, thank you. I’ve tried to start Gintama like 3x and haven’t gotten past the second episode. And I feel like this is a series I *should* enjoy
Mad_Pupil_92026-01-06 04:50
The first like 10-20 episodes are slow, because it does *A LOT* of world building that absolutely pays off once the series gets really going.
Once you get to the episode that is about a hot pot, the series really takes off.
Far_Neighborhood6512026-01-08 11:23
I couldn’t get past the first episode but now I’m on episode 10 and it’s getting to….something. Half of the time I say out loud what the hell am I watching 😂 it’s got to get better. It’s popular for a reason.
Indifferent_Response2026-01-03 14:58
A great excuse for me to watch thr newer seasons and finish the show 👍
lolBaldy2026-01-03 17:05
yayyyy finally going to get back into gintama
Niijima-San2026-01-03 18:14
I've been meaning to watch this but as a filthy dub watcher crunchyroll was inconsistent with how much was dubbed and how much was subbed that I never watched it
WoodenRocketShip2026-01-04 09:36
I don't think this changes anything for you then, I don't think Netflix is giving it a new dub, and the reason why Crunchyroll only had certain episodes dubbed was because those were the only episodes that were dubbed.

I wonder if this will work well given there are so many extra subs for Japanese culture context. I could see this as being a downright awful way to watch this show if it ends up how I think it might
gobananagopudding2026-01-03 18:35
Yeah, I was just thinking about this. Gintama is the one series where all those classic excessive fan-sub explanations during certain jokes really came in handy.
b0bba_Fett2026-01-03 19:36
And even they were frequently insufficient or even occasionally just plain innaccurate.
DoseofDhillon2026-01-03 19:08
The original 201 episodes of Gintama although not perfect, have such great vibes. Like the production staff almost become a character in themselves with some gags later. Not to say later Gintama seasons don’t have these vibes it’s just way more and ways stronger here than even in season 2 or later seasons where it’s far less
RogueKT2026-01-03 19:18
Goated series
Jcritten2026-01-04 00:53
Didn’t realize they finally added more episodes to Hulu after years of the show being in there and taking the subbed episodes off.
Obvious_wombat2026-01-04 02:03
It's been showing in Hong Kong on Netflix for months now
clickclickclik2026-01-04 03:00
won't be the same without tl notes/rumbel
WoodenRocketShip2026-01-04 09:40
This is cool for the people who have Netflix and don't have Crunchyroll, but I can't imagine the subs being anything but lacking with Netflix. If Netflix struggles to give decent subs to 12 episode anime, how are they going to do Gintama, a show that desperately needs context for those in the West who don't get all the references?
Own_Statement21372026-01-07 06:11
I wonder if there be a new dub for Gintama or will it be using the Hulu dub? Gintama has gone through 3 different dubbings and I really want to know if Netflix will go out of their way to make a 4th English dub.
PuzzledHelicopter3292026-01-15 20:45
Just get crunchyroll cause the netflix release is sorry. 25 episodes and no subs for the japanese version
