Nanoha looks cutesy and shit, but it actually a has an intergalactic military sci-fi background that slowly crept out over the years. Her magical girl wand, in fact, is an energy blaster and she canonically can level cities flat.

Believe it or not Nanoha's one of the earliest splits into the more "dark and edgy" Magical Girl tradition. Tonally it fit well enough that the now-defunct Madoka Magica mobile game, Magia Record, did a collab that introduced the Reflection/Detonation movie variants of Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate as playable units.

It's no Madoka by any means but like the other commenter said, it's got intergalactic miltiary sci-if shit underpinning it, and it gets pretty dark for a 2000's magical girl anime.

Now would you believe it's actually a spinoff of Triangle Heart, which is an old trilogy of action-eroge VNs where Nanoha was a minor, mostly uninvolved (100% with the... content) character?

Exceeds is after the movies and appears to be a direct continuation of that timeline. StrikerS and the movies don't gel 100% with each other from a technical/power level standpoint but nothing has happened in the movies that excludes StrikerS from being a continuation to the movies and some of the stuff that happens in the movies helps bridge the gaps between Nanoha's actions in the original series and her words in StrikerS.

Personally I am a strong believer in release order is watch order for Nanoha and Vivid should be read as a manga if you want to do the Vivid side of things so it would be Nanoha -> A'S -> StrikerS -> (Vivid then Vivid Strike whenever you want from here) -> Movie 1 -> Movie A'S -> Reflection -> Detonation

From a continuity perspective with Nanoha's age as the perspective point it is Nanoha(Age 9) -> A'S(Age 10) -> Reflection(Age 11) -> Detonation(Age 11) -> Exceeds(Age 13) -> StrikerS(Age 19) -> Vivid(Age 23). Movie 1st and Movie A'S are at the same point in time as their TV series and are alternative takes on the same part of the story and are in-universe propaganda movies rather than any kind of reboot or alternative universe.

As I understand it, Nanoha OG and A's are a constant (technically recap movies being slightly altered canon), but after that you split into either StrikerS which leads into Vivid and Vivid Strike, or into the Reflection/Detonation movies and Exceeds.

I strongly advice against watching 2nd movie instead of the second season. As it is just a version with a bunch of srorylines cut (and the final fight actually looked worse in the movie because of heavy use of CGI).

Also, it is your personal opinion anout the later seasons. Whike a lot of people concider A's the best entry, StrikerS was the best selling season. And I know a bunch of people who actually liked Vivid Strike the most. Also, crazy of calling Vivid as Vivid Strike also.

You need to watch the first season of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha as well as the sequel, A’s. You do not need to watch StrikerS or any other entry in the Nanoha series. You should probably also watch the Reflection and Detonation movies (no idea how necessary they are as I haven’t seen them yet, though I plan to before this comes out).

Because StrikerS and everything after it take place when Nanoha and Fate are adults. Exceeds takes place while they are still kids, though older than in A’s. The person I was replying to was new to the franchise and was interested in watching this, so I told them what the minimum they would need to watch before Exceeds would be.

Exceed is basically the movie timeline continuation instead of the tv series. So you just need to watch the 4 movies. No need to watch the tv series. And yes tv series and movies are two different timelines

I haven't seen any Nanoha in decades, but my advice is to just stop worrying about watch order. If this show looks cool just watch it. If it's a competent production you'll get enough context to enjoy it without watching anything else in the franchise.

It's Magical Girls except the battles are more like Dragonball or possibly Gundam. Lots of explosive action.

The first season starts out like a very stereotypical Magical Girl show and takes a bit to find its stride, but once you get to the second half of the first season, it goes full steam ahead and never stops.
