You can watch it, but it should be easier to follow if you have basic understanding of the setting from watching at least one main fate series.

Fate Zero is a great starting entry into Fate.
Once you know how a Holy Grail War plays out, you can move into anything.

Fate / strange Fake *is* set to be a *standalone* story. So you don't technically need to watch any prior series to watch this one...

However, I and most others would probably suggest to watch at least the Unlimited Bladeworks and Fate Zero stories first.
A lot of characters and contextual background will make more sense and be easier to understand.
But the directors of this series themselves said that newcomers can come into this series.

And regarding it releasing today. Today is the *2nd* episode.
There was a 1 hour long prologue and 1st episode released already like a year and a half ago.
You need to watch those first before watching the episode that airs today.

Oh okay, so if i watch the prologue and continue this standalone, i wont miss anything? (I plan on watching the rest of the series later but i want to watch it weekly with my friends so)

2nd episode is next week.

I'd say just go with Fate Zero first. I doubt you'd play the VN for FSN but with FZ, you can dive right in.

The creators themselves said in an interview that Fate strange fake is a good spot for new fans to get into the fate series without any prior knowledge. But I suggest you to look up a short video about the fate universe on YouTube which will give u a basic understanding..... And you are good to go ✌✌

In theory you don't have to.

In reality, watching a different fate series will give you the idea and the setting of the "holy grail war" story.

There are also a few recurring characters (note: this is based on me watching Whisper of Dawn, not based on the source material). For example, when the gold armour guy shows up, all the Fate fans get excited. But you may miss the point if you haven't watched other shows - especially Fate Zero - before.

People would say to watch other works first, but I want to be different and say you should watch this, and if you enjoy it, I highly suggest trying the other works as well. Once you done that, you can rewatch this again and enjoy it in a different light with more context.
