What niche anime to watch

I have watched over 200+ anime and my main problem now is that i cant find any new titles or shows to watch that i haven’t already seen or already familiar with the the concept. If anyone has some unique recommendations they can give me that would be appreciated.

Hi ChampionshipPale5481, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

> I have watched over 200+ anime

Do you have a list like [MAL](https://myanimelist.net) or [AniList](https://anilist.co)?

Anyways, try [Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha](https://myanimelist.net/anime/76) if you haven't watched it yet.

Thank you for the recommendation. I don’t have a MAL yet but i will make one soon.

Something super niche is the fine art of Japanese humorous storytelling of Rakugo. I would heavily reccomend Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Its super dramatic and it has interesting build up.

I don't know if they're niche, but I like these...

Aku no Hana (continue it in the manga, or if you don't like realistic animation, read it directly in the manga)

20th Century Boys (manga only)

Boogiepop Phantom

True Tears

Ashita no Joe

Fist of the North Star

Higurashi When They Cry

Kuzu no Honkai

Stop! Hibari-kun (though I haven't finished it yet*)

Touch (*)

Devilman (*)

Lupin III

Fuma no Kojiro (*)

Midori, the Girl in the Camellias

Genocyber

Maison Ikkoku

Urusei Yatsura (*)

As an important heads up, **for OP** and anyone else who might be interested in watching Higurashi When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni), make sure you start with either: the [2006 anime](https://myanimelist.net/anime/934/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) (and it's [second half Kai](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1889/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kai)), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.

The 2020 anime Higurashi When They Cry: New (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake. **Don't accidentally start with Gou**, as it's full of spoilers.

(_Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download._).

Gankutsuou is an anime retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo with very unique art style (and character costumes by a famous designer).

Iria: Zeiram the Animation is something like an anime prequel to a cult classic scifi horror movie, and is one of those anime that I feel like nobody has seen but me.

Twelve Kingdoms is an oldschool fantasy with amongst other things a serious exploration of what qualities a ruler should have.

Madboardjester2026-01-03 12:51

Gankutsuou had me wanting to strangle and body slam the MC before the first volume was over. One of those try before you buy titles.

ghostpickleonastick2026-01-03 13:17

I mean the real main character is the Count himself, we're just seeing the plot through the eyes of a sheltered rich kid on the start of his journey to learn what "consequences" are.

Madboardjester2026-01-03 13:45

Well, the sheltered rich kid had me annoyed as much as the kid in Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket, but in 4 episodes instead of 10 or so for 0080. Thankfully I only bought volume 1 of the anime for a couple of dollars. I avoided spending a lot more money on a title that I would've hated by the end of the first disc.

ghostpickleonastick2026-01-03 13:47

Well if you hated Albert and want terrible things to happen to him and his family, I have good news about how the rest of the show goes.

Madboardjester2026-01-03 14:23

I actually looked that up and was glad that I hadn't gotten any further. I recently bought on eBay, The Galaxy Railways boxset and 5 of the 6 volumes were still sealed with only volume 1 opened. Obviously, the seller didn't like the series well enough to remove the seal for volume 2. It would've been like that for me with Gankutsuo.

ghostpickleonastick2026-01-03 14:34

Yeah, not everything is for everyone. It's not always easy to attach to a story if you can't connect with the viewpoint character and Gankutsuou has very few characters who are actually likeable and stay that way.
