Also Genocidal Organ is a relative anime movie. Highly recommended and better by far in my opinion.
Sweet-Message11532026-01-03 13:00
Monster & Pluto adaptation is possible because socio-political commentary is subtle... 20th Century Boys & Billy Bat is never getting adapted
droidtron2026-01-03 13:01
20th Century Boys got a live action trilogy.
Sweet-Message11532026-01-03 13:02
because it's only available for Japanese audience... anime is a bigger medium
Ocixo2026-01-03 13:24
You have to respect Urasawa's guts for releasing the first chapters of Pluto only a few months after the Iraq War had begun. Some of the references really aren't that subtle if you've lived through the era.
Sweet-Message11532026-01-03 13:28
yep... I've rated Urasawa as high as No.3 in manga history(behind only "Godfather of manga & anime" Tezuka and "Devil of manga & anime" Nagai)
he is the finest thriller mangaka ever
YoloJoloHobo2026-01-03 13:51
I do agree that he's quite fine
KendotsX2026-01-03 14:47
>You have to respect Urasawa's guts for releasing the first chapters of Pluto only a few months after the Iraq War had begun.
Which is on point for carrying on Tezuka's message. Tezuka was commenting on the contemporary affairs of the world through his works (including the Vietnam war for example), and considering how much respect Urasawa had for him, his adaptation of Tezuka's work had to push forward through the same path.
Obviously, Urasawa didn't just do it because it's an adaptation, he took that spirit to heart, and it's apparent in multiple of his other works too.
94Temimi2026-01-03 21:58
As someone who lived through it as a child and luckily survived it (not so much mentally), watching Pluto was like a replay of that time in my life. It was a tough watch, but I greatly appreciated the way it was represented.
Overall, a masterpiece anime with so much depth you could write an entire dissertation about it.
biggie_way_smaller2026-01-03 13:47
Billy bat felt like a Forrest Gump involving obviously mickey inspired mascot depicted as god, I honestly don't know if it delivers social-political commentary or if it's literally just purely referencing history but either way it's genuinely insane to have 9/11 depicted in manga
Sweet-Message11532026-01-03 14:18
9/11 & Hitler in the same manga🥶
Romapolitan2026-01-08 11:06
I think the Hitler depiction is a bit more wild. At least 9/11 is a thing that happened, we can acknowledge it like anything else in history, the big censorship campaign always seemed a bit backwards to me. But the Hitler stuff is a bit out there for me as a German. Not because he is being depicted, but because his personality is very doubtful to me in how it is portrayed. And his whole genocide ideals don't get acknowledged.
ToneBitter19842026-01-03 13:18
Sounds like US and Israel
YoloJoloHobo2026-01-03 13:52
The manga came out pretty much right after the Iraq war so not far off
ToneBitter19842026-01-03 13:57
Makes sense then
WheelMax2026-01-03 19:02
The leader of the country even looks like Saddam Hussein, and defies the court's legitimacy while being sentenced in a similar way. Although Saddam was sentenced to death.
redlegsfan212026-01-03 21:07
I feel like it can be described by any war. I feel like this scene in Pluto describes exactly what [Hawkeye Pierce in MASH was describing in why war is worse than hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUeBMwn_eYc). MASH for the younger folks was a critique of the Vietnam War through the lens of the Korean War.
Dizzy-By-Degrees2026-01-04 12:45
It can be seen as more universal but then it shows a smug Thracian politician saying that the United States will prosper forever and never face any punishment for the war crimes they committed and are committing right now so he doesn't have to empathise with foreigners. So it is taking about Iraq directly, in contrast to how MASH couldn't be a direct commentary about Vietnam and needed to be about the Korean War to sneak the message through.
SmallFatHands2026-01-03 15:12
Thai is how the USA operates they are a terrorist state.

Edge of your seat anime. Loved Pluto, currently watching Monster!

Pluto was AOTY for me when it came out.
ICallMyTeacherat2am2026-01-03 23:23
genuinely thought it may never be a thing once I finished the manga couple years ago. got happy when adaptation was announced yet suspected they could leave out several elements. thankfully it didn't turn out all that bad
Ocixo2026-01-03 13:52
> Crying father: "Have you no humanity? You must know how I feel!"
>
> Gesicht: "I'm a robot."
The symbolic meaning of Gesicht's cold response didn't hit me until now. If he'd been human, this wouldn't have been much different from a soldier blindly following orders. Like a robot, they lack empathy.
Een_man_met_voornaam2026-01-03 14:17
This anime was either 20 years to late or one year to early
Episode 6 is the best episode of anime I've ever seen
NewAccountEachYear2026-01-03 14:45
They could redo the North No.2 story from ep1 and it would win awards in short format films.
Even if I found Pluto a little bit underwhelming, that single story made it worthwhile to watch the rest.
turkeygiant2026-01-03 22:37
Pluto is one of those series where even though the anime is really really well done, there is just something about the pacing and experience of the manga that it isn't quite able to capture. I think its maybe because the manga is SO DELIBERATE in the time it gives to each act of the story, but when you start breaking it out into episodes even if it is a very close adaption, you are still making concessions that disrupt that flow.
Drizztd992026-01-03 14:24

JoJoIsBestAnimeManga2026-01-03 18:46
Are you stupid or something? Why are you self-censoring for such a serious discussion? This is some serious virtue signaling.
ZETH_272026-01-03 17:54
Both are true, and both happened. Puppet rulers committed atrocities as did the native ones. It alway pisses me off when people seem to think the West African and Central African tribes during the triangle trade weren't absolutely complacent and happy with slave trade, or similar occurrences throughout history. Solving over-population, removing dissidents, and keeping people in line through slavery was their way (speaking broadly). Putting morals on the sideline is absolutely nothing exclusive to old Europe and old America. And the worst offender of all here is by far China.

laserlaggard2026-01-03 14:52
It's on my watch list but that dialogue, especially that robot line and after, is rather ... unsubtle. I hope the entire show isnt like this.
WheelMax2026-01-03 19:11
There are layers. We also see robots simpler than Gesicht grieving the death of their child deeply, they just don't vocalize like humans do, and humans often assume robots don't have emotions. And this is one of several flashbacks that have clearly traumatised him, but he represses them and rarely shows outward emotions.
laserlaggard2026-01-03 21:26
Oh I'm sure there are layers, as the numerous rave reviews on this sub have suggested. I'm just saying the way it's delivered is rather clunky. Maybe it's intended coz something something robot, but I'm hoping some of the emotion is implied/inferred rather than browbeaten into me with on-the-nose monologues. I'll obviously be going in with a blank slate, just saying this particular clip isn't leaving the best of first impressions.
WheelMax2026-01-03 22:27
Atom especially, and his sister, and some of the other robot masters, are robots with more subtlety and emotional acting than Gesicht, due to the purposes they were created for, such as Atom being the replacement for his creator's dead son. Gesicht was built to be a perfect hardboiled detective robot that solves crimes and catches criminals, so he has a stone-faced demeanor that slowly starts cracking from all the things he's gone through. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but he does show emotions.
And of course there's great emotional or poker-faced acting from the human cast as well, as they play off each other and the robots, and you start questioning the nature of humanity and robots, how are they different, and how are they the same. It's all a very intentional part of the story.
diluvian_2026-01-05 01:59
There's a lot of context you're missing ahead of this scene.
Akis_sneezes_vessel2026-01-08 08:54
I disagree with basically every review I've seen of Pluto exactly at that point. For me, Pluto is a good show, but it's themes are either too simple, or treated in the most unsubtle way. It is no bad, not at all, but I think it could have been a lot better. I rated it a 7/10. It would be higher if Blade Runner didn't exist, but oh well, there's nothing to do about that.

Pluto and Monster are both animes 1000% worth watching!
nexxlevelgames2026-01-03 16:39
As somone who watched the original Mighty Atom[Astro Boy] episodes this came from.
I was pleasantly surprise on how faithful the adaptation was and how they expanded it and how deep the story and context got.
9/10 for me
Ill_Violinist15712026-01-03 18:35
I wish someone would show this to the politicians, oligarchs and people in power of the deep state.
For them, killing is a chess move, done for profit and ego.
94Temimi2026-01-03 22:01
Pluto is not talked about that much and it deserves 10x more recognition and popularity. What an experience this was!
Abdulaziz_Ibn_Saud2026-01-03 22:56
The story was pretty mid imo but overall great atmosphere
justheretojerkit20202026-01-04 00:04
What episode is this!!!!? The English dub goes so hard, he says something like "how can you remain so indifferent to my suffering?!"
Ocixo2026-01-04 00:17
This clip was taken from the 3rd episode.
Gotta_Go_Slow2026-01-04 00:25
Watched it after learning it's from the same author as Monster (which I consider phenomenal). I was not disappointed.

What a complete waste of a perfectly good bomb.
How unfortunate, that will cost the taxpayer a lot of money.
