It really has a good argument for anime of the year, the animation was really well done, some races stood out more than others but the story never felt rushed, it had a lot of good pacing, the story of the rise of Oguri and the search of Tamamo Cross for being the number 1 are great arcs, also in the story department, maybe the biggest strength of the franchise is the mini arcs. I felt that Obey's arc is up there with Rice in the second season.
The music also another thing that shines, both the openings and endings are a treat and the concert songs are too.
I watched it on JP so for me the VA department made a great job, with Tama, Oguri, Kithara and Norm Ace as examples.
It really was fun in the end.

For y'all people still sleeping on Umamusume, stop it! Go now! Watch that shit and learn about Special Week, Silence Suzuka, El Condor Pasa, Gold Ship, Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross, Symboli Rudolph, Tokai Teio, and Haru Uhara! The characters are all based on the stories of real-life racehorses! Go go!

For real. Don't be put off because it seems like a waifu bait show (yea the girls are cute, but its as "shonen" as anything else.)
That Japan Cup episode was WILD.

How related are the game and the anime? If I don't watch to play the game at all will I be missing out on anything?

You can watch the anime without having played the game. If you feel missed out on anything, check out the airing episode threads and the posts that relates the real world history and events will fill you in on all references nicely.
