Anyone have cool metaphorical type anime or movies that either you can relate or compare to your own life or the world and grab truths from. While also being an interesting narrative

Recently Loved Ghost in the Shell. Favorite movies are princess mononoke, grave in the fireflies, end of evangelion, in this corner of the world, and colorful.

As for shows I loved berserk 1997, hajime no ippo, legend of the galactic heroes, chainsaw man, vinland saga, gurren lagann, trigun, cowboy bebop, and angel beats.

I know this isn’t a manga sub but to get my tastes more quantified, I love tatsuki fujimoto’s style of fast paced and chaotic storytelling with remarkably deep meaningful moments scattered between. My favorite manga are goodbye eri, fire punch, berserk (rip miura), vagabond, and dandadan. Yu yu hakusho is my next project im planning on reading in full.

Take a look at code geass, psycho pass or black lagoon

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:41

I may pick up psycho pass or black lagoon again. Idk why I dropped psycho pass but with black lagoon it felt like it devolved into the hot chick shooting everyone but maybe I needed to just follow the dialogue more closely.

Odd_Manager48342026-01-03 17:45

Honestly I dropped psycho pass like two times before watching it and I realized my mistake while finishing it

Black lagoon is gangster style yes but also about how someone can change (the MC) due to things happening in life

I highly suggest code geass tho, this one is a pure masterpiece

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:47

I watched Code Geass sorry I didn’t say, Loved it, specifically liked R1 more than R2 due to the whole revolution battle thing at the end of that season. It reminds me a lot of death note in the sense of it being a cat and mouse game basically.

Odd_Manager48342026-01-03 17:49

Yeah DN and CG are pretty similar on a lot of things and both are amazing !
So I guess you’ll definitely like psycho pass which somehow may be similar to them in some ways no major spoiler but cat and mouse game here

Unusual_Rush_11892026-01-03 17:36

These fit your description better than your examples, but Night on the Galactic Railroad, Death Parade, and Apocalypse Hotel would all fit as having heavy metaphor elements that are relatable.

However your likes would suggest you lean towards more action heavy anime, so combining the elements you might prefer more thinky-action like Code Geass, Death Note and Gunslinger Girls.

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:38

Appreciate it, I didn’t know gunslinger girls was good it seemed like a meme of a show

also will check out the night on the galactic railroad and death parade is good

Usernaymeme2026-01-03 17:36

You could try Mob Psycho, if you haven't already. I found the entire series to be fairly focused & the character development (for the entire cast) was significant and meaningful throughout the story. It explores themes of identity & societal/peer expectations, growing up, and so on and so forth.

Even if these are common themes in anime, I think the way they got developed in the show was better than most.

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:40

I’ll pick it up again soon. I got super lazy watching it for some reason. Animation is very cool even if the characters can look a bit ugly.

Usernaymeme2026-01-03 17:50

Yeah, I had trouble as well at the start but if you make it to S2 I figure you'll probably enjoy the whole thing

Away-Meet35922026-01-03 17:37

Angrl beats. That takes me back. I ugly cried for that show. Idk how it will hit now, but like over ten + years ago i watched Clannad After Story and watched Angel beats around the same time and ugly cried (it’s more romance, but there’s this weird timeline thing that adds into it) I never watched Clannad but i heard it was good too.

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:38

Honestly clannad is the last show I need to watch from that studio. Watched angel beats and charlotte so maybe thats a good one to watch

Away-Meet35922026-01-03 17:42

Charlotte? Never heard about that show, thanks for the suggestion.

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 17:43

Its not as good as the other two shows but I enjoyed it a few years ago.

Tehbeefer2026-01-03 19:02

I found Love, Chunibyou, & Other Delusions was fairly relatable, your mileage may vary.

Also recommending Satoshi Kon's films.

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 19:07

I think I saw the first few episodes. Was pretty good, reminds me a lot of watamote which I love.

Also will check out satoshi kon thanks

TaskForceHOLO2026-01-03 19:05

Sonny Boy. I don't even know how to describe this show. The narrative itself is a bit weird and all over the place but I don't think the actual plot matters that much. It made me feel some type of way. Kinda like nostalgia but not really. I need to watch it again

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 19:07

Good recommendation I was looking kinda for anime thatll make me feel something haha. I think I started the manga and is like you say. I will pick it up

AriaShachou-2026-01-03 19:44

Girls Last Tour (need to finish the story w/ manga cus it didnt get a full adaptation) - its kind of like if The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus was moefied and expressed through 2 anime girls

Kino's Journey (2003) - it's like a set of parables with very loose continuity, each short story feels like a reflection of the author's worldview on certain topics

Aria the Animation (and its sequels) - might be a little too saccharine and/or slow for you, but if you're looking for something on the happier side of melancholy then this will scratch that itch

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 19:58

Thanks man these seem right up my alley

AriaShachou-2026-01-03 20:06

anytime, and if you do end up watching kino's journey i personally believe the 2003 version is way better than the more recent one

AriaShachou-2026-01-05 18:49

oh it just randomly came to me rn and i remembered this post, if youre looking for something metaphorical then haibane renmei might be right up your alley. give it a google i think youll enjoy it. you can check out the author's other works too like texhnolyze, welcome to the NHK and serial experiments lain.

Did you watch stand alone complex? There's a ton of good ghost in the Shell stuff besides the first movie

Latter-Mongoose55642026-01-03 21:21

I was thinking of watching that and the second movie innocence. I heard theres a third movie that isnt good or something. So its worth watching?

Playest_42472026-01-03 21:24

I watched innocence years ago and I liked it but I'll be honest I don't remember anything about it except that there was a dog

Playest_42472026-01-03 21:25

Stand Alone Complex on the other hand is one of my all time favs. Particularly the first season.
