What are some 2000s anime that were mildly or extremely popular at the time, but now no one talks about?
I'm on a journey of research to find some anime that used to be really popular, but just aren't really discussed or talked about these days, and why that may be the case.
A niche example that comes to my mind is Sgt. Frog/Keroro Gunso, which I used to see a lot of but promptly disappeared over the years. This is actually what gave me this idea, since it's getting an anime remake. Some more obvious ones are like Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Princess Tutu, Higurashi no naku koro ni, or maybe Black Lagoon.
What are some shows that I'm missing that used to be giant in the 2000s but faded out over time?
(Edited to include another anime that came to my mind)

Before sword Art online came along instead of isaakai slop we had cute girls doing cute things slop and their eyes just got progressively larger.
K on started the boom of cgdct if anything. So the op is probably confusing it with all the romcom harem slop in those days.
I thought their eyes got smaller over time. Even look at Clannad season 1's eyes are noticeably larger than in the later seasons. Honestly, it has it charm but when eyes are that massive it scares me a bit ngl.
honestly this genre list fits Code Geass too, though I've never heard the two compared similarly so i imagine FMP is quite different despite the shared genres
For example they skipped the entirety of [volume 8] >!Saito "dies" by sacrificing himself vs an army while everyone escapes and they are separated for the whole volume. Louise gets so depressed she attempts suicide by casting herself off the mage tower only to be saved by the maid. And together they go out searching for Saito. Compare that to 10 minutes of one episode of them being separated where Saito comes back to the academy with the big elf chic.!<
Now half the anime’s are about a fantasy world Harem, either isekei or some hero character kicked out of a rpg party.
Doesn’t help the final season of Shana was kinda all over the place.
But the OG had the perfect blend of seriousness and optimism that any later iteration is just missing.
The novels have always been good but the anime really went downhill once X2 started IMHO.
Edit:
Shuffle, Doremi , Bludgeoning Angel, Idolmaster and My Hime
The original is the one no one truly likes to mention or barely like today, based on everyones liking to your mention of 2006 Kanon
You just named some of the iconic series of 2006, so I've seen and heard quite a bit about those series on places like MAL and its forum along with other anime database websites' forum & community section or even here depending on the threads.
I found my limited edition tshirt / soundtrack at my parents this christmas. I was a cool teenager.
I'm sure I had a shotglass somewhere as well.
Soul Eater is still well regarded but isn't really talked about much. It was a very big deal when it came out and for some years afterword's.
Edit: Also wanted to mention Darker Than Black and Gunslinger Girl.
I still read the series but it is very confusing these days.
they went in way different directions for the story.
Case Closed is still fairly popular in Japan, but in Europe and North America it is basically forgotten. Not even sure where it still has a dub.
I wish it would get out of the limbo it's in and they'd license it for a new home release. It's honestly criminal that so many anime fans can't watch this unless they torrent it or pay a ton of money for one of the old home media releases.
Yu Yu Hakusho.
Yu gi Oh.
The anime going on for so long says a lot about how it was actually liked in Japan itself too, so I don't know why it's "forgotten".
Index though, whoo boy, Top example of how to fuck up your money-making franchise
S3 of Railgun made Railgun hype even stronger
Trigun
Black Butler
Inuyasha
Chobits
Death Note
original Fruits Basket
Full Metal Panic!
original Fullmetal Alchemist
original Hellsing
Kanokon
Kiddy Grade
early Lyrical Nanoha seasons, or the show at all really
Familiar of Zero
Love Hina at number 23 jumps out, it's down to 982 now but at the time it was like the most well known harem anime
It definitely inspired the harem genre which is kind of weird since it's not actually a harem, only a couple of the girls are interested in him so it's more of a love triangle.
Chobits even being as high as #11 is insane to me.
Really popular with the con going crowd. Lots of activity pre social media 2.0 on forums, livejournal, tumblr and all the usual suspect places.
And then, nothing.
Definitely a show that’s aged like milk though, especially when social media nowadays is seen as a 1:1 representation of who you are instead of what you choose to share. I could only imagine the death threats folks would get on Twitter if their favorite character was Russia.
My Otome
One of my personal favorites that I don't see anyone talk about is natsumes book of friends (natsumes yujincho)
And
Deadman Wonderland
Those two come to my mind
Hitman Reborn
Shakugan no Shana
Zero no Tsukaima
Hayate no Gotoku
Lucky Star
Honestly with a bit of time I could memtion a lot more.
I see people mentiom shows like To-love Ru and Haruhi above but these still get mentioned a lot everywhere when no dealing with new casual fans.
To this day, one of the most-watched shows on MAL. No one ever recommends it, no one ever talks about it, and the manga was still ongoing till fairly recently, and the discussion posts were a barren wasteland. The only times I see it mentioned are when people are shortlisting shows that should get another season.
And I will die on a hill they have the most awesome OPs ever. Period.
Like, guys. Why do you think people like this show. Who does that.
Zatch bell
Negima
At least I think it was in Latin America
I loved SGT. Frog!! I hope it gets popular again.
Edited to add: Zatch Bell!! It got a sequel recently, & it's so good. I still believe it deserves more recognition, though. The og manga had me bawling. Maybe someday we can have a revamp of the anime. :,) ♡
**Full Metal Panic!** (as heavily mentioned here)
**Slayers** (or Lina Inverse? - I'm never quite sure what was the anime called)
**Love Hina**
**Elfen Lied**
and later also **Deadman Wonderland**
Nowadays, I hardly ever see it mentioned.
I’d also say mushishi is in a similar category.
My series:
Vampire Knight
D.N. Angel
